This woman's father was snatched by the Gestapo in Vienna in 1938 when she was 10, and released 6 months later thanks to the intervention of his brothers-in-arms from WWI, where he'd been a hero.

3 days later, the whole family high-tailed it to Shanghai, where they rode out WWII.

The bonds of the Great War apparently meant something to some Germans. Truly amazing that Hitler was apparently one of them.

I figure Hitler was probably a decent enough guy if we just go by people actually killed. Generals don't usually pull the triggers. All he did was sign papers and send 'em to officers. In theory, his insanity could have been ignored by the officers and he'd have been deposed.

Actually, the king is responsible for all the pieces on the board. That's why you kill them first (and usually only) when you conquer their country. Hitler saved one Jew once? That's still 40,000,000 odd people in the grave because of him, including multiple millions of Jews. It is gonna take a lot more good deeds uncovered to elevate him to even "Second Worst Dictator in the 20th Century"

Mugato: Didn't Stalin kill more people?

"Pol Pot killed one point seven million Cambodians, died under house arrest, well done there. Stalin killed many millions, died in his bed, aged seventy-two, well done indeed. And the reason we let them get away with it is they killed their own people. And we're sort of fine with that. Hitler killed people next door. Oh, stupid man. After a couple of years we won't stand for that, will we? "

A little more detail from the Vimy wiki...
"The rumoured destruction of the Vimy Memorial, either during the fighting or at the hands of the Germans, was widely reported in both Canada and the United Kingdom.[63] The rumours eventually led the German Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda to publish denials.[64] Adolf Hitler, who reportedly admired the memorial for its peaceful nature,[65] was photographed by the press while personally touring it and the preserved trenches on 2 June 1940 to demonstrate the memorial had not been desecrated.[66] He ordered Waffen-SS troops to guard the memorial from both German and Allied armies."

Stalin is fourth, Leopold reign of terror stated in the 19th-but lasted through the first decade of the 20th.

1) Mao Ze-Dong (China, 1958-61 and 1966-69, Tibet 1949-50) 49-78,000,000

2) Adolf Hitler (Germany, 1939-1945) 12,000,000 (concentration camps and civilians deliberately killed in WWII plus 3 million Russian POWs left to die)

3) Leopold II of Belgium (Congo, 1886-1908) 8,000,000

4) Jozef Stalin (USSR, 1932-39) 6,000,000 (the gulags plus the purges plus Ukraine's famine)

The original report includes a copy of the Himmler order protecting Ernst Hess: Hitler's Jewish Commander and Victim

For those who didn't RTFA, the protection order was later revoked and the guy spent the rest of the war doing forced labor.

If you was religiously Jewish or had 3 or 4 ethnicly jewish grandparents then you was off to the gas chambers

If you had 1 or 2 ethnicly jewish grandparents and was a christian or atheist you wasn't jewish.

A lot of Jews served in WWI for Germany with the promise that they earned a respectful place in Germany. A lot of Jews signed away their Jewish heritage in the early 20th century Germany to get away from future persecution. None of that mattered to the Nazi party. This story only suggest that the Nazi party controlled Hitler as much as he controlled the Nazi party. Good for Hess, but it matters not for the rest.

2012-07-06 07:11:45 PM
Also its not like that was the ONLY jew Hitler wrote a letter like that for. Emil Maurice and his brothers got such letters, as did Herman Goering, and Erhardt Milch

2012-07-06 07:12:27 PM
Sounds more like that adjutant they mention in the article slipped a protection order in Hitler's "To Sign" stack and that was were the protection came from. A lot of the regular army units protected their Jewish fellows in arms. People like Paul Ascher got "German blood certificates" and other really clearly Jewish ones often were able to slip away before naval security got around to arresting them.

Of course they killed civilian Jewish populations without any signs of remorse.

I think my author had a different criteria for measuring the deaths.

. In Stalin's and Mao's cases, one has to decide how to consider the millions who died indirectly because of their political decisions. The Chinese cultural revolution caused the death of 30 million people (source: the current Chinese government), but many died of hunger. Stalin is held responsible for the death of millions by Ukrainians, but "only" half a million people were killed by his order.

But I think your number would be closer to the truth...The dictator would assume the responsibility, even if he hadn't order it himself.

No one beats Chairman Mao!

It's almost as if even the most terrible people have a couple good traits. That doesn't make them any less evil though, just not black and white like in the movies. The messed up thing with Hitler is that he "saved" multiple Jewish men who had helped him and his family (like his family doctor) before he became dictator. Someone really needed to say " hey Hitler, want to repay those Jews who helped you when you were down and out? How about not exterminating their entire people."
