Hipsters don't care.

You mean if I select some scientific term and walk around a large geographic area for as long as it takes to collect a pre-determined number of people who've never heard it admitting that fact on video, then delete all the people from the clip who had heard about it, I can create a video clip that makes me feel smarter than everyone? Awesome, let me get right on that.

I'm not a hipster and I barely know what it is... The sub-atomic particle that gives a particle gravitational "weight?"

2012-07-06 10:55:11 AM
They'd be far more familiar with it if you could put truffle oil on it, or it had more strings than a regular guitar.

That's all right. It knows what they are.

Hipsters don't like anything that appeals to the masses.

Seems like someone discovered that hipsters are ignorant of particle physics and lepton that.

It's a really obscure particle, you've probably never heard of it...

Hey, the beardy guy sort of knew, and that girl, she clearly knew "... by watching the news".

nice.

It seems constantly that the same area of the brain is used for bad fashion and science. Scientists have no fashion. Some have a slight amount of style but those with heads full of bad fashion have no room for science left.

I was going to say something snarky, but holy hell I would do awful things to the girl with pink hair.

/Yes, yes I would.

I had so many snarky things to say. Damn you.

2012-07-06 11:54:53 AM
1. Those are hipsters? They just look like people to me, particularly the older ones.

2. Who gives a shiat about the Higgs Boson besides theoretical physicists? I mean really, does the Higgs Boson affect the daily life of any of those people? Why di you expect them to know what it is? Sorry this isn't the first time science has been ignored by the masses.

It'd be nice if we were all theoretical physicists (not really), but the world needs ditch diggers too and I really don't care if they understand the Higgs Boson.

3. I know Fark is populated by nothing but geniuses from all fields of study so obviously everyone here not only knows what the Higgs is but also helped design the LHC, but I would venture a guess that probably 99% of the entire damn planet couldn't explain it beyond "the god particle" or "mass particle" or however they saw it referred to in twitter, if they can even know that much. Call them hipsters if you want, I call them average people.

4. Again I really don't care that they don't know what Higgs Boson is, I'm much more concerned with actual real world practical things they might not know about that actually affect me. Like politics or economics. The difference is these people are not going to vote for the next Higgs Boson but they (well maybe the older ones) will be casting a vote for the next President. When ignorance has a direct affect on society it matters. Ignorance of a theoretical particle who's existence has just within the last week kinda been proven, really isn't that important.

/whether everyone should be studying this and how big a deal it should be is a separate argument
//reality is people don't care

It's important to note that as responsible world citizens it's our duty to mock those who don't understand instead of educating them. It's more important to remain superior than it is to enrich the lives of others.

2012-07-06 12:13:55 PM
It's a sub-atomic particle that is responsible for giving atoms mass, it is not however a 'graviton' or really anything to do with gravity.

/Didn't Google it.
//Mac users and therefore, by default, a Hipster.

A few of those people didn't look/act like hipsters, and a few pretty obviously knew what it is.

Let's be honest, that's the way most of us know what it is (for small values of "know"). And let's remember that about 50% of people don't even know the sun orbits around the Earth, or however it works.

you should really care because there will always be more ditch diggers than theoretical physicists. the physicists need to be able to convince the ditch diggers that spending money on fundamental research is a good idea and will eventually improve their lives. otherwise you get a bunch of hipsters misquoting gil scott heron about whitey on the moon or tea-tards waxing poetic about how corporations could have done it for so much less.

as far as things that affect you... the average person is just as ignorant about the financial collapse and home mortgages, and those are much easier to explain than the higgs boson.

/do you always number stuff this way?

Speaking of this topic, does anyone know what happened to that nutbag who claimed he was from the future and was here to stop the Higgs-Boson experiment?

Hipster aside, why would anyone make a blind guess and do so with such confidence?

"Higgs Buton is a person." (:40 in the video)

Ever since "hipster" has identified so strongly with MacIntosh products, I've always seen them as people who favor style over substance; posers.

When I don't know something I like to say something wise, like, "well, I don't know what it IS, but it SOUNDS like it might be... "

2012-07-06 05:24:47 PM
The Higgs boson is not what gives particles mass. The Higgs field does that. The boson only exists inside the LHC for a millionth of a millionth of a millionth of a second.

The next time we need a new target to fire a high-power beam of charged particles at, I have a suggestion.

Yeah, whatever. I used to live in a city FILLED with these useless idiots. Some of them had some useful skills, and some of them were admirable in some ways, but the vast majority of them would be useless in a crisis, and understand very little about the world outside their own lives. Hipsters are kids who have enough excess resources to better themselves as world citizens, but instead squander it on acting cool and impressing other useless people.

They don't want to be educated. If they did, they've had more than adequate opportunity to educate themselves, and certainly enough resources: They ironically buy products many other people can't afford the non-ironic versions of. They just waste money, waste their time, waste their lives. They don't know stuff because it's not cool to them, and they're pathologically terrified of not being cool. The one girl in the video who had (at best) a Daily Fail understanding of it was derided as a "nerd" by someone we have to assume is a friend. That's the mentality. They don't know it because it would never occur to them to wonder about it.

2012-07-06 07:42:35 PM
It's the particle whose field Kitty Pryde and the Flash can manipulate so they can phase through walls. Duh.

2012-07-06 07:44:24 PM
Ah, I love these videos where they ask a bunch of people questions, cherry pick which answers they will show, then go on to paint the entire group with that sample. Now let's see one where Americans don't know who George Washington was or can't locate Australia on a map.

Wave or Particle it really doesn't make much difference in quantum physics. Either is a perfectly correct and valid description of it.

To be fair though, now that everyone knows about the Higgs Boson, they don't like it and claim the it "sold out."
