Voters could get the right to overrule federal laws and mandates under the terms of an initiative filed late Thursday.

No. No, they can't and won't, even if it passes. Have fun trying, though.

Because when I think of Constitutional scholars...I think of Arizona.

2012-07-06 09:58:24 AM
See? Rand Paul was right. The SCOTUS doesn't determine what's Constitutional or not. It's the voters in Arizona.

Let 'em. This would be better than anything on TV.

Virginia and Kentucky resolutions, anyone? We tried out the whole "Can states determine constitutionality?" thing at the start of the whole experiment, and the decision back then was "no!"

They already have a way to do this. The Courts.

Course, that is dependent on the Court's determination IF a measure is Constitutional.

This is a measure to undermine the Courts and Executive branch. Good luck with that...

What's sad, is that you have Legislatures across the country who keep harping on the Constitution, and seem somewhat ignorant of the actual process. Ist Sturm und Drang, and little else but an excuse to try to throw off the shackles of their duly elected government, while trying to drape themselves in the flag...

Just listened to a tidbit of an interview with the sponsor. That may look like a trollface but it sounded like he actually thinks this is legit.

A separate proposal crafted by Rep. Chester Crandell, R-Heber, would have Arizona declare its "sovereign and exclusive authority and jurisdiction over the air, water, public lands, minerals, wildlife and other natural resources within its boundaries." Exempt would be tribal and military reservations.

Sounds like secession to me

Arizona, which has out derped the derpiest of the south for several years, has really gone off the deep end.
Is there any way anyone gets prosecuted for treason over this? It certainly sounds like they are adhering to enemies of the United States, i.e., those who would subvert the constitution.

What are the practical ramifications of "reject"ing something? Like you just sit there and say it's not a real law, from inside your prison cell?

Can we sell Arizona back to Mexico?

Granted, it would be a hard sell but it would cut a chunk off the deficit.

You get a great soundbite for a re-election campaign, while hoping nobody noticed you cost the state millions in a lawsuit it had no chance of winning.

Please, Arizona, just secede from the union already and let the rest of us get on with our damn lives without you useless pieces of scum stinking up the place.

No, the decision was "we'll lay waste to your women, children, towns, and farmland if you don't pay the taxes we say you owe."

The Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions were ultimately not carried out because the federal government compromised - tacitly accepting the legitimacy of nullification and secession.

2012-07-06 11:06:48 AM
You see, this is what happens when you get these morons talking about "originalism." You get morons spewing the same "states rights" garbage that we thought was settled by the civil war. Which is amusing, because "states rights" folks have largely been on the wrong side of history, and used it as an excuse to enable the most despicable American institutions - slavery and jim crow.

It always seems like states' rights aren't so important to these people when the states are doing things like allowing gay marriage, and legalizing marijuana.

Arizona can, and will keep farking that chicken.

True, just saying that this one is so full of herp and derp, 8-1 isn't unimaginable, but yes, 7-2 is more likely.
