200 years from now, when the hot winds and eight month long scorching summers stifle all agriculture, and the once fertile fields are able to only able to produce weeds, and the once abundant sources of livestock are down to a few sickly cows and chickens, and water is a resource scarcer than gold... Then it's time to eat crickets.

Until then, eat a fat juicy steak, and enjoy the fact that you can.

IMHO, it makes more sense to raise insects on waste (cow manure), then feed them to fish or chickens. You don't generally have to challenge people's whole upbringing and sense of disgust to get them to eat chicken or fish. Unless they are vegan, of course.

Lol. Brilliant. Market ground crickets at $1 per ounce. About twice as much as top sirloin. And about 10x more expensive than boneless skinless chicken breast or turkey.

Cuthbert Allgood: Sure

/It's not that big of a deal. You people eat shrimp and lobster right? Same fu(kin' thing.

There's more meat in a lobster than in a cricket.

(I hope...)

Hey, does anybody want to try a bite of this new environmentally friendly snack bar made entirely of insects?

Subby, nowhere in the article does it say the snack bar is made entirely of insects. In fact, it says the opposite:

In a process that it says was inspired by the Aztecs, Chapul bakes the crickets before grinding them into a flour that's used in the preparation of the energy bars.

I'm a little surprised at the protein number (isn't that why I'm eating crickets?), but what the ProBar lacks in cricket powder, it makes up for with a list of protein-rich ingredients like peanut butter, nuts and sunflower seeds.

Amos Quito: Are they kosher?

My cousin has asked around and gotten conflicting opinions on whether they are kosher or not. One rabbi said no they are not because crickets != locusts, another said they might be ok.

One of the other things he is looking into is getting them certified gluten free, but that is apparently a bit of a pain.

Ear-Bending Cellmate: ...and when there was no meat, we ate fowl and when there was no fowl, we ate crawdad and when there was no crawdad to be found, we ate sand.

H.I.: You ate what?

Ear-Bending Cellmate: We ate sand.
[pause]

H.I.: You ate SAND?

Ear-Bending Cellmate: That's right!

Holy Crap! This is my cousin's start up company! Never thought it would make it to the front page of Fark! This is awesome!

The bars are actually pretty good! They debuted at the LA Bug Fair ~ a month ago, and then they did their first round of fundraising through kickstarter. They have been getting a lot of great press as well!

This bug eating fad seems to come around about every seven years.

Ever had store bought hummus? Not too different from this energy bar, if you know what I mean.

I'd try it. It's not as if I haven't eaten crickets before.
