(The New Republic)   Rep. Valarie Hodges (R-Watson) surprised to learn religious school vouchers are usable for religions besides those of the founders, presumably meaning Deism, tax aversion, and grinning a few hours each Sunday before heading to the Hellfire Club   (tnr.com) divider line 296

Right now there's a legislative staffer in Louisiana who got screamed at for trying to explain this fact to the Honorable Mrs. Hodge -- no doubt very slowly and with many visual aids and perhaps small treats to reward cognizance -- who's laughing his or her ass off.

Religious freedom.

HOW DOES THAT WORK?

2012-07-06 08:26:33 AM
What depresses me is my suspicion that Ms. Hodges -- and people like her -- think it's the Muslims who are being unreasonable for having the audacity to believe that equal protection and the free exercise of religion applies to them, too.

I get the feeling this Congresswoman is a closet Juggalo.

At least she's open and honest about her bigitory and wanting to use state power to establish and support only Christian religion. Makes lawsuits much easier when you can refer to these remarks.

Hodges mistakenly assumed that 'religious' meant 'Christian.'

Speaks more volumes than there are in Encyclopedia Britannica.

And this of course all glosses over the fact that I don't think my tax money should be spent to send your children to your chosen religious indoctrination center.

It's a very simple test for Christian fundies, really.

"If Satanists were proposing what I'm proposing, would I have a problem with it?"

If the answer is "yes" then you shouldn't propose doing it.

Didn't this happen in some other useless part of the country? A school district successfully passed a law allowing children to pass out religious materials to other children, so some angry parent created 500 flyers on Wicca and stupid soccer moms were clutching their pearls in horror.

I feel like I read that somewhere....

Two words: Christian Exceptionalism

Nothing earned, nothing deserved. Simply, "God chose us. Equality and fairness do not apply."

Wicca and Islam should ALWAYS be used in such cases. Shuts the fracking Christians up like a shot to the head.

Seriously, if someone around here tried that- and they wouldn't, because I live in the socialist paradise of Massachusetts- I would turn Sub genius so fast.

mauricecano: Makes lawsuits much easier when you can refer to these remarks.

The lawsuits will be easy anyway. Even Scalia and Thomas would rule against these fools if they tried to limit anything to Christian-only. These people for years have been arguing that the Establishment Clause does not prohibit the presence of religion in general, but only an endorsement of a specific religion. The old 'freedom of religion does not mean freedom from religion argument.' It worked fine when everybody was Christian, but now that there's a little more religions diversity, it's gonna bite them in the ass. And it will be hilarious.

"Here we were as legislators making long-term decisions about the future of all our children while seeming to be missing key information," Hodges said.

You mean Deism, where they believed in reason and scientific observation over a Supreme Being?

There are people who actually believe that freedom of religion only applies to the various Christian denominations. They are the scariest, dumbest people you will ever have the misfortune of meeting.

There is an argument that many of them only claimed Deism because it was the minimum faith declaration requirement to be a Freemason.

They should just go to Tea Party rallies, write down exact quotes of what the people there say, and publish them. It's crowdsourcing at its finest.

Remember when people posted "Because Jesus" as a response to a question like that, and it was safe to assume everyone who read it recognized it as a joke and not a plausible answer? Those were the good old days.

What a horrible, ignorant little creature. How the fark can she serve while being so legitimately stupid?

Why is it so farking hard for these people to understand that other Americans do not always believe what they believe, and one of the tents of this country's defining document is that everyone gets the same rights and that the government does not codify any single religion?

The nice part is this.

If (and sometimes that seems a big if) the Supreme Court does its job, all these Christian attempts to limit Islam or give special privileges to Christianity will backfire as they have for the last 150+ years and will only reinforce the wall of separation they hate so much.

This. It's a party the consistently campaigns on following religious laws.
