According to my source, the end of the world will be on February 14th, in the year two thousand and sixteen.

Cool story, sis: I managed a staffing agency for a couple of years and got an emergency request last May. A small company had lost their receptionist and needed a new one immediately. Their regular receptionist of 9 years quit her job on May 20th to be with her family when the world ended the next day.

/Wonder if there will be equally crazy people this December
//Oh, wait--this is America. Of course there will be.

I have my speech all ready for if and when I actually meet anyone who believes this 'End of World' tripe:

"Ok, please come with me. I want to draw up a contract that says you give over to me all of your cash, investments, material possessions (such that you will part with) and properties at 12:01 AM on the day following the End of The World, which according to you is to fall on [date]. If the End of The World does not happen you retain no claims to said properties or assets and can seek no legal recourse to retrieve those properties and assets back into your posession."

See how 'firm in their beliefs' they are at that point...

Researchers and scientists feel like they are 'completely drowned out by the doomsayers on the Internet' when it comes to disproving Apocalypse theories.

The fark, man? If you're a scientist who's worth anything, set better priorities than arguing with Apocalypse theorists on the Internet.

Maybe this is all a ploy by the Xians to get people to treat Xmas less commercially.

December 1st: "There is no point in buying presents since we'll all be gone on the 21st."

December 22nd: "That wasn't so bad, was it? You spent the last three weeks concentrating on your loved ones and on other important matters. Try to live that way every day."

When this comes up in my classes, I point out and describe the yearly doomsday claims and media hysteria for the past few decades. I've noticed that the one that usually hammers this home is the "year of the shark" five or six years ago, where the actual recorded number of shark attacks was at a record low.

I've found it's a good hook for me to get my kids thinking about media and critical thinking.

/ And if journalism doesn't want me to teach kids to think of them as panicky sensationalist idiots, they can stop being panicky sensationalist idiots.

FTFA: The persistence of these worries stems from a variety of factors, researchers say. The deluge of misinformation on the Internet, poorly developed or underutilized critical thinking skills and plain old human nature all contribute, convincing many people to fear the worst despite the lack of compelling evidence (and the poor track record of such dire predictions over the years).

Could also be said of many conservatives.

I don't have to.
It is the Signatory who is choosing the date and the particular flavour of "End of World" kookiness.

Note that the agreement has nothing to do with an actual 'Ending of the World', it has to do with me getting a guillible twit's stuff the day AFTER a date (of guillible twit's choosing) that the guillble twit would presumably not need material possessions anymore as he will have Raptured, Ascended, Been Taken to the Light, whatever.

pounddawg: What is the next date the world will end? Has anybody given a date that came after 2012?

I propose that the world will end on the 2000th anniversary of the crucifixion, in approximately 2029. The exact date's a little fuzzy, but that should help me fleece the rubes for a little while longer- might even be able to stretch it out to 2033.

It's especially hard to reach young people, most of whom seem unable to distinguish between reliable and unreliable sources, he added.

*SNIP*

The deluge of misinformation on the Internet, poorly developed or underutilized critical thinking skills and plain old human nature all contribute, convincing many people to fear the worst despite the lack of compelling evidence (and the poor track record of such dire predictions over the years).

Unfortunately it's not in most people's interest to teach others to use critical thinking skills, or how to differentiate between reliable and unreliable sources. Once you do that, they start questioning you, and that's not good for your control over them.

The school system certainly doesn't do it. They don't want free-thinkers in their classrooms. They want someone who will sit down, shut up, and do as they're told. The same goes for people in power in religion and government. They don't want to be questioned. They want to be obeyed. Do as you're told.

Most parents don't teach their children either. Part of it is that they've been indoctrinated into the "obey" culture themselves, and the other part of it, again, is that they want to be obeyed, not questioned.

I'd also like to comment that doomsday predictions do not have a "poor track record". They have an abysmal one. A "poor" record implies some sort of success, albeit a small one. But not once has the world ended when someone predicted. That's a 0% success rate. That's not "poor".
