The ad for RON PAUL radio at the end uined what was otherwise a very good article.

The sooner everyone starts to simply ignore these people the better.

The gay community realized this years ago. So now, WBC is moving on to other targets.

They're attention whores, and trolls. Any attention just feeds them.

While ignoring them might work to some degree, the WBC have always found new tactics to employ that allow them to force their message on the rest of us. When the LGBT community ignored them, they started protesting military funerals, for example. If they are ignored there, the WBC will just start protesting children's funerals, or at Little League games (Stealing second base infects little kids with The Ghey, you know), etc.

WBC knows how to push buttons, and if you take one away, they will just push another. And anyway, people of good conscience should not simply ignore Evil when presented with it. Evil such as the WBC should be actively resisted, exposed whenever they crawl out from under their rocks, and not allowed to succeed in any way.

How do these people get any press? There aren't more than a handful of them.

Every time people make a big deal out of them, they get their message out. Stop giving them attention.

Classy, cool. But this is still my favorite way of dealing with them:

Why bother? It's a church they're protecting. Why protect a church Fark atheists? Let them all be stupid right? Why not mock the Lt. Col., and all the people worshipping at the church. After all, they are stupid believers of the great spaghetti monster in the sky right?

Am I doing this right? Funny how y'all pick and choose when to make fun of Christians.

It must be terrible to be so persecuted. How do you manage to get up in the morning, all those atheist hands holding you down?

I would love to seem them start protesting Little League games of any sport. Because eventually they'd run into the violently drunk/angry sports dad (you know, the kind that get into fights with other parents or refs/umpires). And no matter how it ends, it would make for an excellent story.

I've said it before:

What if the WBC's real agenda is to unify communities and to expose the hatemongers within so that local communities know who the shiatbags really are?

*yawn* If you can't see the difference between religious people quietly saying goodbye to their friend at a funeral, and religious people protesting said funeral because "teh gayz", then you need more help than I thought.

2012-07-06 08:33:47 AM
Except that Westboro never actually protested at this funeral. So the students blocked... what? Air? This is a news story about a day in which nothing happened.
---------------------------------------

June 4th, 1973 was much like any other summer's day in Peterborough and Ralph Mellish, a file clerk at an insurance company, was on his way to work as usual when - nothing happened! Scarcely able to believe his eyes, Ralph Mellish looked down, but one glance confirmed his suspicions: behind a bush, on the side of the road, there was no severed arm, no dismembered trunk of a man in his late fifties, no head in a bag - nothing, not a sausage! For Ralph Mellish this was not to be the start of any trail of events which would not, in no time at all, involve him in neither a tangled knot of suspicion nor any web of lies, which would - had he been not uninvolved - surely have led him to no other place than the Central Criminal Court of the Old Bailey. But it was not to be!

Ralph Mellish reached his office Peterborough at 9.05 a.m.., exactly the same time he usually got in.

ENID: Morning, Mr. Mellish.

MELLISH: Morning, Enid.

Enid, a sharp-eyed, clever young girl, who had been with the firm for only four weeks, couldn't help noticing the complete absence of tiny, but telltale blood stains on Mr. Mellish's clothing. Nor did she notice anything strange in Mr Mellish's behaviour that whole morning, nor the next morning nor at any time before or since the entire period she worked with that firm.

MELLISH: Have the new paper clips arrived, Enid?

ENID: Yes, they are over there, Mr Mellish.

MELLISH: Oh.

But for the lack of any untoward circumstances for this young secretary to notice and the total non-involvement of Mr. Mellish in anything illegal, the full weight of the law would have ensured that Ralph, Aldous Mellish would have ended up like all who challenge the fundamental laws of our society: in an iron coffin with spikes on the inside!

Some ignorance just goes above and beyond vanilla religion and desperately needs to be met head-on. (Apply to the forehead.) While we oppose the hypocrisy of religion on general, we vehemently oppose those who seek to use religion as a cover for hatred, bigotry, corruption, pedophilia, greed, or any other base action which needs dragging out into the light of day and exposing.

Pontious Pilates: According to the article, WBC didn't even show up! What a bunch of spineless douchebags. Can't even stick to their attention whoring guns.

Spineless douchebags? Hardly. The WBC is anything but spineless. This is a brilliant strategy on their part, and actually achieves their desired attention whoring goals perfectly without them having to spend a penny or even make any effort. They have opted for this "press release/no show" gambit quite a bit lately...and it works like a charm.

Until people start simply ignoring them, like any troll, they will never go away.

Not likely. WBC would have welcomed the confrontation and publicity.

It's hard to get "dust in my eye" over a bunch of (well meaning) idealists simply helping WBC's agenda on this one. Great, you endured hot temps to stand and promote WBC's agenda while they sat back in the A/C in Kansas...let me cry a tear of shame for you.

pssshhhaawww...you all miss the point. I'm not one to talk. If there's anyone not goin to a possible heaven its me. I don't go to church, I've been to prison, I've contributed to an abortion, I believe in gay marriage, I believe in the separation of church and state..

...but the one thing I can never understand, and I admit this is left over from the other thread that I was late to, is why I saw so many comments insulting and mocking people who are religious. It always goes right to that. It starts as a discussion of separation of church/state then goes to severe hate. If it were severe hate agains....well...it would never go that way with anything else.

And don't say "well no one else force feeds their shiat down my throat"...BS...wake me when someone forces you into a church. No one is making me go.

The majority of atheists don't hate all Christians, just the fundamentalist assholes who try to force their corrupted, diseased version of Christianity on America. Just like we don't hate all Muslims, just the fundamentalist assholes.

Sure, there are a few who hate all religious folk, but they're just douchebags who like to feel superior. Of course, you knew this and you're just nailing yourself to a pretend cross to draw attention to yourself.

You do know that WBC protests at secular funeral services, too, don't you? This has nothing to do with promoting or even affirming Christianity. It's about opposing evil attention whores, who pose as devote Christians by invading the privacy of grieving families, dishonoring our fallen soldiers and espousing a belief system that in no way reflects the teachings of Jesus. If 50 WBC "protesters" show up anywhere, 10,000 sane people need to show up to shout them down.

Radical Christians are the reason why two people who love eachother cannot marry if they're the same gender. Radical Christians are why, until VERY recently, I couldn't buy beer on Sunday. Radical Christians are why several states are pushing bullshiat anti-abortion laws.

Religious fundamentalism is a disease ...and you only have to look at certain countries in the Middle East to see how that disease can kill a country. And it CAN happen here.

At this point the WBC are like Al Qaida. They've hit a few high profile targets to get their rep up, then let everyone else's worrying tire them out.

The counter-protesters at this funeral are much like the TSA, standing around waiting for a threat that never shows up.

The proper thing to do is to stop playing in to the WBC's tactics and start ignoring them. Definitely stop any and all media coverage of their "events". You "win" the game by living your life as you did before.

That's not quite right.

They basically run around doing this crap so they can sue and take people to court if anyone tries to stop them from doing this crap. That's how they make a fair amount of their money. The gay community didn't so much ignore them as they figured out how not to get sued by them... And THAT'S why WBC moved on to new targets.

I'm remember watching a TV news story about a Marylyn Manson Concert being protested. First they interviewed the chruch folks who were protesting the show, who sounded like Raving Lunatics, going on about make believe stuff like the Devil and Hell, and how the concert should be banned, etc..... Then they spoke with one of the freaky goth's waiting in line for tickets. He spoke eqouently about how this country has free speech and how the church was free to express themselves however they felt. Was a strange juxtaposition.

Tolerence vs Intolerence.

I'm unfamiliar with American laws, but wouldn't or doesn't the Westboro church fall under a terrorist or hate organization? I ask, because I know they're banned from crossing the border and protesting in Canada. Are they protected by your first amendment?

It's the age-old argument of how to deal with trolls. Most of the time you want to ignore them because it's not worth 1) giving them attention, and 2) giving yourself an aneurism.

Sometimes, though, they start shiat so putrid that you just have to stand up and say "what is wrong with you? stop that."

In the absence of a real-life banhammer (how I wish...) we'll just have to keep debating.
