I strongly believe if your ideas are so weak that a mere mention of other people's upsets you, you may in fact have poor ideas.

A good, strong idea would be better. Let them praise Thor and Odin and Tyr. Then let them break bread and quaff ale. Then, let me on that city council.

Every time Christians insist on sticking Jesus up our asses in government settings, Atheists should take the high road and insist that everyone be included for fairness. Starting with Allah and Mohammed. Funny how the Jesus heads STFU fast when you pull them out. Religion is so stupid. Little children screaming and defending their god, who somehow needs puny, weak humans to defend them. Idiots.

As a former atheist I agree with them. This is also true to all non-fundamentalist Christians. By making statements like that you are overbearing and insensitive to the beliefs of others. It is best to first establish common ground with people before asking them to join you in a discussion of gratitude.

Bugs Bunny: Well here we are, Pismo Beach, and all the clams we can eat.

Bugs looks around, confused
Daffy Duck emerges from the tunnel behind Bugs

Daffy Duck: What a way for a duck to travel. Underground. Hey wait a minute, since when is Pismo Beach inside a cave?

Daffy Duck turns and stares

Bugs Bunny, looking around: I wonder, eh, you know, I just bet we should've turned left at Albuquerque, then maybe a right turn at La Jole. . .

The scene pans out and we see untold wealth. Daffy's eyes get very big

Bugs Bunny: Hmm, ah, hmm

Daffy Duck licks his licks and looks at Bugs

Bugs Bunny: Well, we can't be too far off.

Daffy Duck looks evil

Bugs Bunny: So if we, uh-

Daffy Duck, hitting Bugs on the head: It's mine! You understand! Mine! All mine! Get in there, down! Down! Down! (He is beating Bugs back into the tunnel) Go! GO! Go! Mine! Mine! Mwahahahaha! (He stops and runs towards the treasure)

Bugs Bunny, peaking out from the dirt: Eh, what's up duck?

FTA: "If the gentlemen in Atheists United are so concerned, let them first close down the chaplain of the Senate, then the House of Representatives, and then come back to the Pismo Beach City Council," Jones said. "I have people tell me all the time what the prayers mean to them."

Because that's how the political system works. Start at the TOP!!!

I don't understand, if people are real atheists then the very idea of religion isn't even worth the time wasted thinking about it. All I see is another meaningless biatchfest on the internet by social stunted armchair social commentators. Complaining about a problem with a group of people by doing what you are complaining about in the first place makes no sense. Example: If you are complaining about people shoving their beliefs down your throat, it makes no sense to "correct" it by shoving your beliefs down their throats.

Chaplain performing a prayer ceremony at city council meetings? The only point of that is for Christians to plant their flag on that city's government and declare "this is ours, everyone else get out".

2012-07-05 09:58:58 PM
Remember, when you make your government an extension of your religion, that's totally fine. But if two people who are the same gender get married, their private ceremony is "shoving an agenda down our throat."

lately most threads feel like this

go my team, may they prevail over those that drape themselves in another color or with a different label, those lesser beings, those fools who believe only what they've been spoonfed, don't they know we have the truth, and failure to recognize this means they're deserving of ridicule and banishment

So much win and so early in the thread. Guess i'll put the popcorn back on the shelf.

My rule of thumb. If you can't masturbate or view porn in a place(aside from church itself), religion shouldn't be present either. Places like hospitals and such are exempt(dying and sick deserve their council of choice), but still limited to the private rooms / chapel.(unless they're a church run hospital, then hey, you can't really complain much about it's presence).

Much like sex(and fat people in revealing clothing)religion should be a personal and private experience, not pushed upon others. Ironic that the christians are the largest offenders(in the us), in being so open about religion but so buttoned down about sex.

I see your point. It's like when an atheist goes on and on about how "offended" they are when they see a nativity scene or the fact that "In God We Trust" is written on money. What's the matter? Mommy didn't hug you enough you freakin' crybaby?

Why do they waste the time at city council meetings with praying, anyway? What possible govermental purpose does it serve?

Is the invocation really just a time for the attendees to shuffle their important papers to the front and make sure they've got a full cup of coffee? I can't imagine anybody pays any attention to it if they open every single meeting with a prayer. It would just become background noise, which if you're the kind of person that *does* pray is counter to the whole idea.

Well, the former exists while the latter do not. So I don't see how it would hard to decide.

Thisbymaster: If you are complaining about people shoving their beliefs down your throat, it makes no sense to "correct" it by shoving your beliefs down their throats.

Just referring to this article, how are the atheists imposing their beliefs (actually the lack of) at all?

Invocations at government functions are fine and dandy, just don't bring up only one particular belief system in the process.

2012-07-05 10:01:24 PM
I'm starting to think the only reason atheist outrage articles get linked is so the pro-theist crowd can have a big group hug in the comments and lord their lord over all of us. This is like the fourth one today.

False equivalency. Asking for meetings to be religiously neutral is not shoving beliefs down their throats. Wanting some kind of "there is no God" chant or something that is added to the meeting would be.

My tactic (if I cared) would be a bit different. I would get the atheist group together and have each person make a statement before the city council on random topics. The first guy would go up there and say that before he gets to his comment he needs to take the time to thank Zeus for watching over the city and ask for Zeus' forgiveness. The next one would come up and start exalting one of the Hindu gods and right when you think it's over, she goes onto another Hindu god, and it continues . . . maybe the big finale would be someone with a long speech about thanking L. Ron Hubbard and include some choice scripture quotes from him about how Christianity was a brain implant caused by aliens forcing humans to sit in intergalactic drive in theaters watching Jesus films for thousands of years and all praise should be upon L. Ron!

Eventually they might get the hint. It'd be funnier either way.

It seems entirely likely that the best people would be aware of their supremacy because of their relatively high intelligence. By "stupid" did you mean something more along the lines of "arrogant" or "rude"? Would you prefer smarter people pretend to be as dumb as everyone else in order to spare their feelings?

It infects everything, such fear of the opinions of others! If you seek your own personal and ever evolving perception of the truth. That is where you will find freedom. The time of preaching has passed.
Truth is something that changes, like new discoveries in science changes the next discussion, those people at the highest level of understanding in physics, math and biology see something that will evolve our understanding. This is the most important path.

What if someone actually is superior to the majority of people on some aspect? Keep in mind the statistics on the number of people who don't believe the moon landing was real, Elvis is still alive, we have been visited by extraterrestrials, Big Foot is real, homeopathy works, creationism is real, global warming isn't happening, etc. etc. etc. Face it, some people genuinely do have epistemically better substantiated beliefs. Why should they be mocked or made to feel bad for actually knowing something that reflects reality?
