$2500 if the manufacturer's repair facility even deigns to take the job. Full price, of course.
New model replacement cost would be $5500. I'll need to call the shop in the morning. Once all the information is in, I'll know the precise amount of appropriate despair.
And then I'll start looking for things to list on Astromart, I suppose.

StranahansBarracuda: MoronLessOff: StranahansBarracuda: Dad, aka The King of Cheap, reuses the pipe cleaners until I'm so grossed out I toss em. It's impossible to change him, so I work around him :)

That's gross. I use a fresh cleaner each time. Both ends through the stem and then a swab around the bowl. A bag of cleaners is only a few bucks. You can find even better deals if you shop around, but I have a local Tinder Box, so I favor them. Get him a few packs of cleaners and, if he doesn't have one, a nice pipe lighter. Maybe that will persuade him to throw used cleaners out of kitty reach.

Nope, and it is mighty gross. I have gotten him to weigh them down by placing a stone ash tray on top of them so George can't knock them off the table.

You see, the man was born in Czechoslovakia in 1940. He remembers having the Russians in the house and the Germans in the yard while hiding in the root cellar. He dismantled grenades as a kid and threw the firing mechanism in the river to kill fish for food. When he got an orange in his stocking for Christmas he ate it peel and all. It's very much like having a Depression era parent. The man can make a 12 pack of paper towels last a year. He eats RAMEN for lunch every day (oy! the sodium!) He's currently wearing a pair of orange J. Crew shorts I abandoned in 1990 (he's slim and I buy things big.) I have to pick my battles, but thank you for the suggestions :)

Unfortunately no, they think she was unable to feel it anymore because she had dead tissue around the breaks. It looked really bad today - glad she's getting her surgery tomorrow.

Please give us and update on her when you can.

But on subject of Our Favourite Alien, many of us wish so much to help but could use some focus & direction. Don't know yet if it's safe to send Paypal funds. But I did have a look at her profile, & some kind soul gave her TF! If she's not working, that might raise her spirits a wee bit

it doesn't get really cold here (well, I don't really feel the cold anyway), except in Canberra. I'd be quite happy until it drops below -10degC, which is unlikely. I live in Brisbane, which is best in winter, the summers are much too hot, the winters make life bearable. Doesn't stop other people from complaining about the cold though.

spinach gunk: akimbotoo, gremlin1, predle, laulaja, thank you.

Sarah's been breathing kind of weird for the past week or so, short rapid breaths all the time even when she's sleeping. Now it's starting to look like it's taking her rather a bit too much effort to breathe at times. It isn't cramping her style but it sure isn't good. Could be a symptom of water on the lungs or congestive heart failure. Her temperature is normal and her gums are still nice & pink, at least when I checked, so that's a plus. But a sudden change in breathing isn't the kind of thing one should wait around to see if it gets better by itself. She's losing weight too which is worrisome as her appetite is still pretty good most of the time.

Hoping for the best but fearing the worst. :( Please keep your fingers and paws crossed for my little girl.

I'm right there pulling for Sarah and you. Keeping you both in my thoughts.

I can certainly empathize right now. Alice has not been doing well either. She's not in too much discomfort and is still eating, but she's losing weight rapidly and is starting to have trouble making it to the litter box (but the little trooper still tries). What can I say?....this is what we signed up for and we have to be there for them.

This picture reminds me of the bottle babies we have at the rescue. She had them in the bathroom for the time being. I went in for a quick potty break during spay day and they were curled up on the bed. Only one of them was suckling on the other's neck. The one getting sucked on had this look on his face like "seriously, make him stop". Naturally they all wake up and start running around but the poor sucked on kitten was just covered on drool along his neck and front leg :p

So how are Sarah and the kitty who had surgery today doing?

Just got D back from the vet. He's lost almost 5# in a short period of time and was pretty dehydrated. Did have some jaundice but he's also real twitchy on his stomach and I guess is spleen is somewhat enlarged. Running a shload of blood work later tonight and tomorrow so by next Caturday I'll know if we're looking at something like pancreatitis with complications or liver failure :(

Said he looks like he could have hyperthyroidism but that's the easy fix, got to get him feeling better from whatever has him down now.

I presume that the object shown is a telescope.. I would think that you could get parts for that.. Is that a magnifying lens or just glass? Looking at the cracks, the thickness seems uniform... there needs to be a little play in the fasteners to account for expansion... do you have the book on it? $2500 is the price for the shop to fix it? Judging from what I an see, the center object is a reflecting mirror focused on the eyepiece.. so the delicate part would be alignment, and there appears to be three allen screws in the mirror assembly just for that.. see if you can get a price on just that glass piece, or send me the mod/sn and I will see what I can find.. I think it can be fixed fairly easily for less than you think.. gotta be easier than a $500K bottling machine.....

Thanks Yobbery. We're heading off to the vet's in about 20 min. Will update when we get home.

Poor sweet Alice. Crossing fingers that she is going to be OK. You're right about being there for them. They give us a lifetime of love and Ceiling Cat knows my little guys have helped me through some of the hardest times. We just help them through their difficult times when it's their turn. It's part of what we signed up for. And I wouldn't change that for anything. Everyone should have love and comfort to see them through their golden years and times of ill health. Including and especially our furry kids.

Hugs to you and Alice and the gang. And to everyone else here who is dealing with sickness or loss of their beloved friends.

Will stop speaking in sentence fragments now. Brain diverting language resources to more important things.

Back soon!

ugh, long week. got the boys moved to my aunts today. three hour drive to get there and another three back. elwood was thrilled to have access to an outside upper porch. jake stayed hiding flat behind the couch. my aunt's cat, L-mo stayed hiding on the back of the treadmill. there was a constant low growl from her but there were no nasty swipes. crossing our paws that this will work out until we can get our own place.

soooo, we went out to our local beerhaus with hubby's ex and our friend. i insisted that another couple be there as well so there was a buffer between me and her. i told hubby it was best to have the other couple there so she knew what she would be getting into if things clicked. i behaved. things went well between them and he brought her and her bike home. they talked until 130 am. i had to tell my friend that was a good sign as if she wasn't interested she would have goodbye right at her door. guys can be dense it seems.
