Getting excited, drinking and getting drunk might be an expected reaction to winning the lottery. Though, in Brantford, becoming excited, drinking and getting drunk is also an expected reaction to remembering how to tie a shoe.

/Those who can't... "Screw this, I'm having a drink".

Hostikka said he was stunned as he got into his car and drove to the beer store, returning to the gas station to talk to the owners.

Do they not sell beer at gas stations? Or was he going for the good stuff?

Having just been in Canada I can tell you that I saw exactly one beer/liquor store. It was in a mall in Nova Scotia and the prices were outrageous.

Here in Ontario, the government control the vast majority of alcohol sales. So we go to the government run store to buy our beer.

Not sure about Canadian lottery taxes or real estate prices, but if he is left with about half after the penalties for taking the lump sum and taxes that still leaves him with 8 million. $500,000 for a nice lake house, $200,000 for a very nice fishing boat and new tackle, $200,000 for some nice guns and a hunting gear, and $50,000 for a loaded up Challenger SRT-8 and he still has plenty of cash leftover to pay his property taxes, utilities, maintenance on the property and boat and live the good life for the rest of his life.

yea, but that there is 8 mil CANadian, which is only like 4 million in ameros, which means he can only get a house or a boat if he wants to drink budweiser for the rest of his life

$1 USD is about $1.02 Canadian right now. The glory days of having your money almost double as soon as you cross the border are unfortunately over for the moment.

True. Are you obligated to reveal your identity and appear in promotional material for the lottery if you win in Canada? Any notoriety or publicity seems like it brings too much of a chance for frivolous lawsuits and money grabs ("Oops, I slipped and fell in your front yard, if you just give me a couple hundred grand I'll forget about the whole civil suit I could file" or "Remember when we hooked up at the Neil Young concert 30 years ago? I'd like you to meet your son, and about that child support...").

Ontario does have the LCBO though. Last time I was up there (which was about ten years ago) it was one of the most beautiful darn things I'd ever seen. Clean, helpful staff, great selection, low prices, well lit, and overall a great place to shop. If we could set up field trips for our rednecks to see how great a government run liquor store can be maybe we could get them to stop being so afraid of government run healthcare.

Actually hire two different accounting firms. Give each a half of the money.

Each audits the other and whoever earned you the most money that year gets a % bonus.

I don't understand the people who take forever to claim their lottery winnings. I would be so worried about losing the ticket that I would go straight to whatever place you're supposed to go to claim your money, or, if they were closed, camp out in my car on their street staying awake while staring at my ticket until they opened up in the morning. The only delay would be when I made a quick call to my tax accountant on the drive over.

I do tend to misplace things a lot, though, so I'd be pretty paranoid about losing a tiny slip of paper worth millions of dollars.

I've already decided I'll ask a friend to drive me to the lottery office if I should ever win. I know I wouldn't be fit to drive. I'll buy that friend a new car for his/her troubles.

Then I'm going to buy the state of Arizona and give it to Mexico just for the laughs.
