While filming "it?" What is "it?" What was being filmed while three-year-olds were fighting? Subby isn't saying, and I don't know what "it" is, unless this is some kind of EST thing, and if that's the case, why would you have three-year-olds fighting when you actually have a physical representation of "it?" I mean, holy shiat, we have finally found "it" and this is what "it" looks like. This is genius!

English? Remember? Subby, you should learn some of "it."

Are you "special"? Only "special" people would not know what "it" represents in this context.

I've been out of high school for a few decades. Isn't "while filming it" a subordinate clause set off by while? If so that would make it pretty clear the "it" refers to the subject of the main clause it is transitioning.

Basic antecedent/pronoun agreement would indicate that "it" is "the fight". How are you confused by this?

There is no prior noun that "it" could possibly be referring to. "Fight" is not a noun in this context and you can't refer to two three-year-olds as an "it." If you insist on using this format for a headline, the correct form would have been "while filming them," not "it."

There is no "it."

Is "pedant" a noun?

Ah ok. I thought the "it" referred to the "you" in "If you are going". I thought the headline was pointing out the stupidity of filming yourself encouraging three-year-olds to fight and posting "it" to Facebook.

Overall I'm just glad I'll never have to diagram a sentence again.

CSS time...

I'm the youngest of three girls, sisters fight like sisters do. When my two older sisters were fighting all the time and I was still just a babe, my mom got sick of all the screaming and pushing. So, she sat them in front of her and said: "Ok, Oldest, you have my permission, you may hit Middle with everything you have. Go ahead, get it out of your system." Oldest is incredulous: "No. I'm not going to do that!", "Why not?" says mom, "Because she's my little sister and I don't want to hurt her." Mom then turn to Middle and says: "I'll now give you the same option that Oldest passed up, you may hit your sister as hard as you can.", "No mommy! I'm not going to do that!" They take the lesson with great rewards and don't fight for a couple of months.

Fast forward a few years and now Middle and I are fighting like crazy. Constantly. Mom decides, well, it worked once, let's try it again. So she sits both of us in front of her and says to Middle: "Ok, Middle, you have my permission to hit Youngest once, with everything you have.", "No mommy! She's my little sister and I don't want to hurt her!". Mom turns to me and says: "Now, Youngest, I will give you the same chance I gave Middle, you have my permission to hit Middle once with everything you have."

WHACK!!!!!

/Middle truly was a terror, childhood schizophrenia. I had had it with her shiat and took my shot.
//Best part, mom couldn't punish me...

I think Hillary has a point. The words "the fight" do not exist. The verb phrase "to fight" does not qualify as an antecedent because it's not a noun or noun phrase. It's the infinitive form of the verb "fight."

Now, if the sentence had read, "If you're going to encourage a fight between three-year-olds while filming it...." that would have been OK because "a fight" is a noun phrase antecedent for "it."

Maybe this is more odd because it is the mother, but when I was younger my teenage uncles would get my cousin and I to fight each other. No one got seriously injured and I'm fine today, so I guess I dunno what's the BFD. Also no one filmed it.

Fight is not a noun in this sentence.

"it" refers to "three year olds", and therefore it should be "them", not "it".

Can we all start doing something useful now? Myself included?

There is no "the fight." "To fight," not the non-existant "the fight," cannot be represented by "it." How are you confused by this? Replace the "it" with "them" and the headline works.

What is scaring me the most is how many of you in here totally fail to understand how and why the headline is a barbarism, and why it is not pedantic to point that out.

I fear for the future, for numerous small reasons like this.

Dude, no one here is writing an essay for AP English. We use conversational English. *Everyone* (including you) knew to what "it" referred.

So, stop being a pedant. We all know that you're the smartest. You win. Now, let it the fark go.

If minor grammar abuse frightens you, I'd advise against ever reading YouTube comments. You might be be sent into permanent catatonia. In fact, it might be advisable simply to avoid the internet. Just think how awful it would be for your family to find you curled up on the floor blank-faced and drooling, muttering something about prepositions under your breath.
