They'll just pack up the business and move outside LA city limits. There goes even more revenue for the city.

Grand_Moff_Joseph: They'll just pack up the business and move outside LA city limits. There goes even more revenue for the city.

Easier said than done. They'd have to move outside L.A. county, which is certainly feasible, but the neighboring counties (Ventura, Orange, San Berndadino) tend to lean much more conservatively and would probably work hard to keep porn sets out of their neighborhoods.

2012-07-05 11:21:56 AM
Why are they still shooting porn in Cali?

It would behoove them to move their production facilities to a more business friendly state, like Nevada.

You mean they're going to vote on something that might impact their local economy?

Will the condoms contain advertising? Will the state get a cut of the revenue?

Who "professionally" shoots porn anymore anyway? Isn't there enough amateur cell phone variety floating around to satisfy everybody now?

Who says they are even gonna stay in SoCal, or even Cal in general if LA county goes full retard?

I watch a lot of P, but I'm on the internet so res ipsa loquitor on that I suppose. Some of them are like watching a sexual form of Russian Roulette as they go sans condom. But that is a choice they make I suppose. Until gov't want to ban cigarettes for the deaths, health issues and fiscal burdens, then don't ban anything for safety's sake. It just seems hypocritical.

This is what's wrong with our country -- we value money over other things including ethics. If you have a legitimate business, then you have to follow workplace safety rules. Same rules regarding bodily fluids apply as to nurses, or janitors, etc.

I bankrolled two porn movies back in the 90s and was surprised (sort of) about how coercive the directors are with the "actresses". The girls would be brought on with the understanding that they wouldn't do certain things, but then during the shoot the director would make them do it, berating them with things like "we can find plenty of other girls that will do it", "you're wasting all our time", etc.

Basically, the porn actresses generally are not choosing to do bareback scenes -- their employer is making them do it.

Anyway, turning a blind eye to an issue like employee rights just to make money is unethical, although sadly this seems to be the American way.

2012-07-05 11:37:20 AM
And this, right here, is why the porn industry's dirty little secret is that it spreads HIV and other chronic STDs like wildfire.

Condom use was the reason that a lot of the pornography makers were leaving LA and going to other places to make videos. LA county, by ordinence, requires all adult film stars to use condoms and contraception, and have regular STD testing.

If I recall correctly, the last vote on this was within LA city limits. This vote is for the entire county.

Would-be starlets don't go to Nevada to try to become movie stars. By the time they get to Vegas, they already look used-up.

You think because they're not wearing condoms its Russian roulette? You do realize they get STD tested constantly and are very strict about it. When a single person in Brazil tested for HIV, the entire industry worldwide shut down for a month.

2012-07-05 11:45:42 AM
I'm torn on this. On the one hand, I like the "personal freedom" argument against helmet laws (and seatbelt laws and so on), so I would be opposed to laws that said men always had to wear a condom during sex. On the other hand, though, what if the actors themselves would rather wear condoms, but are being forced to do without because the director (or some other person in authority) thinks condom use will hurt sales? Looking at it from a worker's safety point of view, rather than a personal choice point of view, I'm more in favor of it.

Grand_Moff_Joseph: They'll just pack up the business and move outside LA city limits. There goes even more revenue for the city.

As far as I know, it is in general legal to film porn anywhere in the United States (with certain limitations such as child pornography). More specifically, in California, the state Supreme Court declared porn Constitutionally-protected free speech. Prior to that decision, porn was often filmed in secret because it was illegal to produce pornographic movies.

All of that is to say that there's no legal reason why they have to stay in LA, and they could in principle go to any state in the USA, but there are good legal reasons to stay in California.

Wait a second. Within 24 hours of contracting HIV she had full on sores and other health issues? I don't think HIV works that fast. Chances are she already had it and infected the other guy.

This has nothing to do with anything, but when will there be enough porn? Just something I thought of while reading this thread. I bet I could start now and watch it all in about 15 years. Hmmm, challenge accepted.

If they can require actors to wear condoms, then by Crom, I can demand the ignorant and the poor have to wear them, too. this is not descrimination. The Poor are on one end of the spectrum and the wealthy skywizard fellaters are on the other end.

cman: "Why are they still shooting porn in Cali?"

Economic geography.
You can easily rent cameras, lights and such in California. You can easily rent expensive houses. You can easily find performers. You can easily hire people to work the equipment. You can easily find an editing bay. You can easily find disc manufacturing, packaging and shipping companies. etc.

If you want to make a porn movie in the traditional sense, having the infrastructure around is a huge help. You can certainly do it elsewhere, but you'd need more money on hand and you'd need to put more time in on finding/developing contacts in the peripheral businesses you'd require. And you'd still run the risk of trivial-in-California problems costing much more money. (Cameraman gets sick: try finding a half-decent cameraman in Boise who's OK with shooting porn.)

All of which is to say: they'll stop shooting porn in California about the same time they stop shooting porn in the traditional sense.

/ And I'm not sure if that's as inevitable as we all think.
// Any web series/studio of note has spent the last 5 years growing toward, and operating more like, traditional porn studios.

2012-07-05 11:56:58 AM
Condoms ruin porn. Who wants to watch porn that's as tame if not more tame than their own sex life?

The best (nastiest) porn comes from Europe anyway, so regardless of the outcome, the truly dirty stuff with the hottest girls will still be condom-free.

2012-07-05 12:00:09 PM
With a number of studios that have already left, taking the tax revenue with them.
