Now Porsche owners can stop worrying about dying via engine fire and begin worrying about dying via electrical fire instead.

Engine fires? It's not a Ferrari.

Up to now Porsche has basically just been a hedge fund that happens to sell cars on the side. And now, after breaking off some more cash for the rest of the company, VW Group is going to want their pound of flesh. So I wonder how this is going to affect Porsche's product line.

For starters hopefully they get rid of that abomination the Panamera.

AverageAmericanGuy: I thought they stopped making the Boxter. I'm sure you can get one used, though.

They never stopped making the Boxster. They're on the third major revision in fact. It sells well, and anchors their brand at the 'low end' (meaning around $50,000 starting price).

They are actually a great buy coming off lease though.

That pic is not a Boxster, btw.

I'm thinking the Boxster and Cayenne are safe. These are the models that brought in all the revenue that kicked that hedge fund into high gear. I'm pretty sure we'll see more common chassis across all the brands. It's the only way to make some of them (like the Bluesport) financially viable.

Guaranteed we'll see VAGCOM everywhere. Not sure if that's a good thing.

Cyberluddite: Same here--I thought Porsche/Audi had been a VW subsidiary for 50 years or so. I never realized they owned less than 50% of it.

It's a whole bunch of cluster German business cluster fark.

From something I wrote before:

Don't confuse Porsche SE with Porsche AG. It's a bit like the whole Cingular-AT&T thing. Porsche Automobil Holding SE owns 50.73% of the voting rights in Volkswagen AG, and 50.1% of Porsche Zwischenholding GmbH, which owns 100% of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, the manufacturer of a range of sports cars and SUVs.

The fun bits. In 2009 Porsche SE and VW AG reached an agreement to merge. However a few months later Porsche SE lost control of Porsche Zwischenholding (Which owns Porsche AG) and now Zwischenholding is a joint venture between Porsche SE and VW AG.

Oh, and Porsche Holding Salzburg (HS) (Which is an automobile trading company) is now wholey owned by VW.

Or if you drop all the fancy extra German words: Porsche is owned by VW which is owned by Porsche which is also in a joint venture with that Porsche to form Porsche.

In the US there is GM and GM Financing which is a different company 'technically'. So if GM Financing was doing well enough and GM crashed, GM Financing could buy GM. Or if Delphi or Visteon actually did well enough to buy the company they were forked from.

3.6l 32v audi V8 biturbo. If you're gonna do it, go big.

Also audi rear hubs and bearings, audi tranny, shifter and cables from a boxster, half shafts pieced together from all over the VAG/Porsche parts bin, radiator from an R8, brakes from a 993 etc. etc. Oh, and the radiator overflow is from a Mann truck. This parts bin runs deep.

Not so fast there sparky. The tranny was free, the engine was $300, another $300 for the turbos. Fabbed the manifolds, for about $50 and the motor mounts for about $30. Radiator was about $100, shroud was fabbed for about $20. Renegade kit is close to $1k and you still need to buy the small block. Even then you're stuck with a 901 transmission. There's a few hundred I didn't include (numerous gaskets etc.).

It woulda been much faster to go small block as the fabrication is almost nonexistent.

Besides, COOL FACTOR!

I just didn't know which way it was winking. Never trust guys with American Iron. The 'Vette and the new Mustang taught us German car guys to be careful. :)

These monster 914s are bringing a faint smile back, after nearly losing my lunch at the thought of Volkswagen fully owning Porsche again. Last time that happened, the US and Brits bombed the living crap out of the factory, and I'd rather not see a repeat of that unpleasant business again.

Yeah, there's something timeless about a stone-killer 914.

I just wanted to come here and say last year I got a great deal on a used Audi A3 base model. From the second I saw it I fell in love. It is quite frankly a perfect car. It is fast beyond reason, beautiful, solid, safe, seats made from leather softer than I've ever felt, good gas mileage, room for the kids when needed (wagon). I love getting in it in the morning. I love every thing about it. The 45 mile one way commute is too short. It just may make me broke because I will never again be able to drive a normal car and will be forced to obsessively continue to buy Audi's even though I probably can't afford the nicer ones.

I was in a shiatty mood the other day driving home from work, and pulled up next to an Audi A5 (2.0T AWD) at a stoplight. My windows were down, and so were his- and the Audi driver says "Hey, nice M3!" I say thanks, I like driving it, and he replies with "Yeah, too bad you didn't get a REAL sports car!" and revs his little 4 banger. I smile, think for a split second and say "Yeah, too bad you didn't either. But hey, Jettas are cool too!"

TeddyRooseveltsMustache: Bring back the VW Bus and put a Porsche engine in it.

Since you make this "bizarre" comment I presume you know that this was widely, if not frequently, done back in the day. Old friend of mine put a (IIRC) 911SC drive train in his late 70's T2c here in the SF Bay Area back in the day. The look on peep's faces as you effortlessly cruised past them at 80 mph on I-5 was priceless.
