Why the hell do they refer to this as a US craze? I've been here awhile and I don't know anyone that's used a friggin helicopter to prom

It says the "US-style proms" are on the rise. Excuse me if I missed the bit you are referring to, but here is what I found in TFA:

Thanks to shows such as My Super Sweet 16 and films like High School Musical, the US-style proms have been increasingly on the rise in Britain.

You are correct, though, AFAIK, about the helicopter thing. Besides, you can't exactly land it in the street, you'd have to hit some sort of airport, and if your HS is next to an airport you probably can't afford a farking helicopter.

The girls seem to be in a pretty good mood considering the pilot had just asked if he was getting a beej during the flight.

What are you to do with when all the limos are booked up on your prom night?

For best friends Chloe Webb and Lauren Huggett, the answer was to take a £500 helicopter ride instead.

Well, considering one of them is going to beauty school, I figure either: she's the poor one, her folks saved up a long time for the helicopter ride, or her dad is a mechanic and the helicopter company wanted some free press.

Well, that's a bit silly. Never really understood what the deal was with some parents and their weird vicarious economic penis-measuring contests with other parents.

But, after you've dealt with the parents of your students enough times, you sort of start to take the fact that even the smartest of them are drooling retards at best when it comes to their kids in stride. So I can't say this would even strike me as particularly egregious if the article wasn't particularly saying so.

//Used to know one of the guys that drove the helicopter for the county hospital, he was a cool guy, used to take us up in his private one (in retrospect, probably kind of a death-trap) on holidays and stuff sometimes, back when I wasn't big enough to count much toward the weight limits. Don't think anyone would have been particularly impressed by him dropping someone off for prom in it, though, a lot of us in my high school knew the guy and he probably started up the machine every time he wanted to get the mail, he loved flying to a ridiculous degree.

That seems pretty reasonable. What's a limo? It must be nearly half that.

It's a little Robinson R44, from what I can tell by the photos. Pretty much the helicopter equivelant of a volkswagen beetle. New they sell for about $400k.

Not like they came screaming in in a sikorsky s-76.

When I lived in Connecticut, it was not uncommon for kids to arrive at the prom by helicopter. I mean, after all, anybody can rent a limo.

I went back and tried to read the article.

I stopped when I came upon "The girls were picked up in the Robinson R44 twin-engine chopper"

No such animal. single engine chopper.

I know it's a fluff piece, but put a little effort in, for krist's sake.

Proms have nothing to do with need. They're a big blow out event. I've been an american all my life, and I've never seen a 'copter landing, but they listed the price as 500 pounds and I've seen a lot of outfit/car rental combos that would top a thousand US dollars. To me, a chopper is way cooler way to blow a grand than on a fancy meal and a dress with more taffeta.
