I think I've come up with a new theory about Mitt Romney's candidacy. It's sort of like the election is his speed of light... A barrier he can't surpass because the closer it gets to election day, the closer he gets to occupying all known positions on an issue. I think I'll call it The Theory of General Romnetivity.

I would think Mitt Romney's dot would be a lot bigger. I mean, how do you pin down any of his positions to that narrow a coordinate? Romney's position usually are to the right, to the left, to the north and to the south of most of those candidates, often in the same interview.

I think his dot should encompass all points...and points that aren't measured.

The really sad part is this isn't that much of an exaggeration. In the span of 3 days Romney has gone from 'an individual mandate is not a tax - it's a penalty' to 'the individual mandate is a tax' to 'Obama's individual mandate is a tax but my mandate was a penalty'.

Honestly is there a stance he could take on this that he hasn't occupied in the last couple days? He's trying to have his cake, eat it, and claim to be on a diet all at the same time.

Here ya go:

For accuracy, Mitt Romney's speckles cover everything on the board except that occupied by Obama's dot. I think that best defines Romney's postion(s).

Who cares what Mitt Romney's position is on anything? It's always a) the opposite of Obama's and 2) whatever appeals to the repub base at the moment. Come to think of it, that's the official repub attitude on every issue, so I guess Romney's not that far out of touch after all. How else can you scream for poor people to have "skin in the game" by paying more taxes, then complain about what is, essentially, a tax on poor people?

Aesop - The Ant and the Grasshopper

In a field one summer's day a Grasshopper was hopping about, chirping and singing to its heart's content. An Ant passed by, bearing along with great toil an ear of corn he was taking to the nest.

"Why not come and chat with me," said the Grasshopper, "instead of toiling and moiling in that way?"

"I am helping to lay up food for the winter," said the Ant, "and recommend you to do the same."

"Why bother about winter?" said the Grasshopper; "We have got plenty of food at present." But the Ant went on its way and continued its toil.

President Beetle ordered that Grasshopper must store up food for the winter. "No!" said the Ant. "If Grasshopper wants to not store up food and die of starvation, that is his decision. You cannot force your unfair tax on me by making him pay more."

And that fall, during the presidential election, Ant voted for Cockroach.

The bartender, impatiently, says "No, of course not. I told you that yesterday!"

Third day, the duck walks in, quacks "Do you have Duck food?".

Exasperated, the bartender says "No! for the last time NO. WE DO NOT HAVE DUCK FOOD! This is a bar, not a duck farm! If you come in here one more time, I'm going to slap a individual mandate on your ass and force you to buy health insurance!"

No, you should definitely go for it! The same kind of reasoning that allows you to determine that a penalty of some fixed amount or some percentage of income (whichever is smaller) on people who can afford insurance but refuse to get it somehow constitutes "broken promise" for Obama will surely have more than enough room for that. Indeed, it's an even more appropriate example, since excise taxes are at least indisputably considered a kind of tax (as opposed to noncompliance penalties which, you know, are considered by most people to just be penalties).

The tax on tanning salons too - you should find some way to work that into this as well. It can only make your argument stronger, I promise.

The stammering and gnashing of teeth was epic.

I love taking the opportunity to point out these sorts of things to people with that mindset.

One well placed question, and they just fall apart. Another favorite:
"You keep talking about wanting smaller government, but isn't supporting the idea of the government telling us who we can and can't marry (or telling women what they can do with their bodies) directly contradict that notion?"
or
"You keep saying your 'pro life', but it seems that your concern with 'life' ends the moment the baby is born, or if a person is on death row. Shouldn't the desire to protect 'life' be consistent across the board?"
or
"You constantly talk about the incompetence of the government. If the government is so incompetent, why are you so supportive of the death penalty? Why should we trust such an incompetent government with taking a person's life?"

It just drives them NUTS.

Look! Here's a coordinate system with the two candidates and a bunch of people no one cares about!
It makes it look like the candidates have virtually the same opinion on every issue!
Both sides are the same, so vote Republican!

I don't want to piss in your Wheaties, but...
You do know that's "Kriegshund" in proper German...right?

It's odd, but I read that as "plead the Sith"

He doesn't take his orders from Cheney, but he is an android, so you might be on to something.

Wait, Romney changed his stance on an issue in order to more closely align with the people he wants to vote for him? I, for one, am utterly shocked at this unprecedented move by Mitt.
