Which Denis Leary I should listen to -- the one who pitches Chevy trucks to me on the teevee since they're so good on gasoline or the one who doesn't care about getting fuel efficiency and who cynically mocks America's teevee consumer culture?

(conclusion: neither one)

haven't really cared about this guy since he ripped everything good from Hicks. He didn't go full Dennis Miller derp, but he did pretty much quit being worth giving a crap what he says.

Happy 4th of july, cliched middle aged whining boston plagiarist guy

It's Ford trucks.

I hate those commercials so f*cking much.

Times are tough and you need to save money on gas. How? A brand new Ford F-150.

Yeah, that's the ticket, $38,000 for a f*cking truck that gets sh*ttier mileage than any car I've ever owned.

How dumb are the people they are marketing to?

Bill Hicks still? Really? I really don't see it except they both did a bit where they pranced around smoking cigarettes. The punchline was that one made an album about cancer and the other died from it.

As legend goes, Leary and Hicks were friends once. Apparently, Hicks was honing his "angry righteous indignation" routine while Leary was a more "everyman" stand-up comic. But one fateful day, I'm told, Hicks discovered that Leary had stolen his persona.

Did any of this happen? I don't know. When these events supposedly took place, I was in elementary school.

I don't care if Leary killed Hicks, stole Hicks' act, pack of smokes AND his girlfriend, I love Leary. He had me as a fan when I was a kid watching his MTV promos.

Speaking of Leary and Mtv, this shiat is gold. There's 25 of them.

I'm sure that if there were some evidence of Leary's repertoire before and after this supposed day, it would be on YouTube. I'm also sure that if anyone actually gave a shiat they'd be more inclined to find it than I am.

In absence of that, though, anyone who claims that Leary ripped off Hicks is full of shiat. They're both moderately funny, in my opinion.

There is a major difference between Leary and Hicks. Leary is occasionally funny.

2012-07-05 04:35:34 AM
I don't think I've seen Leary doing standup since way back when Comedy Central would run standup clips all day. So I don't know if he's ripped off Hicks. Is his entire set about how much he loves drugs and how much he hates religion? Cause Hicks had one pony, and that was the only trick it could do.

he ALWAYS talks about how he doesn't care about gas guzzlers, has in his early standup, and some ford marketing person jumped on it.

That show just got so depressing. I don't mind dark topics but first he sees dead people then his kid is killed and his dad gets Alzheimer's and he steps in a bear trap and gets tarred and feathered and attacked by a cougar...

It's easy enough to find comparisons on Youtube. There are Hicks/Leary bits on the kids who committed suicide after listening to metal, the jogging guru who had a heart attack while jogging, some "good guys who got killed and worthless guys who didn't" type of stuff, and others including all the smoking-fetish bits of course. And then there's Leary's general Hicks-lite persona, plus a couple of too-close turns of phrase.

I'm not sure there's anything there that Leary couldn't have thought of independently, and the similarities are being cherry-picked out of a lot of material at this point, and some of them are reaching even so.

But...after listening to both of them, I can't say it's difficult to believe Joe Rogan's claim that back when he first heard these two guys he asked other comics about the simliarity between their acts and was told Leary had a rep for stealing.

Leary sucks, he has the most predictable, boring schtick that trades on a masshole persona. He's like the northeast variant of Jeff Foxworthy, and I cannot believe anyone found that video remotely funny, I didn't laugh out loud once. I'm also deeply confused how Leary can spend his time hawking gas guzzling trucks and then mock his fellow Americans for buying them; What a hypocritical corksmoker he is.

/masshole and proud
//thinks Hicks was definitely better at improv stand up.

2012-07-05 11:09:57 AM
That really wasn't that good. He's sort of expanding on the a$$hole song but it's not nearly as funny.

It was masterful on turning on a dime from tragedy to comedy and back again

Leary is frequently annoying and thinks of himself as being a hell of a lot bigger than he is. But this was just right. When I look at America, too much of what I see looks just like what he's describing.
