Certainly shakes up the Northwest.

Minnesota have Parise and Suter, Flames have Hudler and Wideman.

I don't think I like where this is going.

Yeah. And Edmonton with Hall and Eberle and the Nuge and Schultz and Yakupov. It really sucks for them.

Overpaid. They are worth 6 million a year not 7.5 and 13 years?
in a concussion prone NHL this is going to screw them later on

Owners are overpaying before the new CBA is signed.

And also, you can't really overpay anyone anyway. The salary floor is so high that if you ever need to dump a contract, there will always be a team out there willing to take your junk just so they can keep playing. See Florida and Brian Campbell last year.

Damn, I would have liked to see Parise on the Hawks. He would have filled in nicely for Hoss while he's learning to count past potato again.

With this move, and the additions in EDM and COL, how will the Canucks feast on a weak division to their third presidents trophy?

2012-07-04 02:26:11 PM
And suddenly I have a vision of the CBA talks. Bettman is asking, no, BEGGING, for limits on contract lengths. Anyway, good on Minny for getting them, hopefully it won't utterly cripple your franchise within the next two or three years.

It really seems like not enough people have talked about how easy the NW division has been for the last few years. Love that Parise and Suter are there now. CUCK THE FANUCKS.

CapGeek has already updated. Minny is 3 million under right now, and will be 10 under next season, but that's only if Backstrom doesn't re-up or takes a severe discount. Link

Good for them. Parise is no Lebron, and it's not like he's taking his talents to South Beach. It's Minnesota, not Miami. It's probably the most "right" decision of all the decisions they could make as a couple.

/Too bad there was no ESPN special.

A bit off topic but apparently Rick Nash has submitted a list of teams he'd agree to be traded to. Pittsburgh, Detroit, San Jose, New York and Philly.

Not from last season's ticket sales, that's for sure.

Pittsburgh has just over $10 million in cap space. Nash is set to make $7.8 million next year.

Pretty snug fit, but who knows.

7.8 is 2 million to much for an overrated player who prefered to play in a low key market

To be fair they have to ask for a lot. I can't see Columbus settling just for the sake of getting rid of the guy like Ottawa did with Heatley.

Time to sit back and see who overpays for Matt Carle. I'm putting my money on the Red Wings.

Parise signing is actually (relatively) easy to understand. He's from Minneapolis, his family is there, his fiancee (soon to be wife) is from there, and he said quite clearly that if he signed a contract he'd like to be with one team long term so he could raise a family. Minnesota kind of makes sense in that respect, and the franchise has been big on home-grown talent for a long time.

Suter? Little murkier, maybe they're good enough friends. Apparently the two talked a fair amount during the whole dog and pony show.

Oh, and just because it does deserve a pretty good props, I would like to point out that X_Legend actually called this last night in the Free Agent Frenzy thread:

So, what's the strategy for the owners coming into the new round of CBA negotiations? Save us from ourselves?

jekostas: Suter? Little murkier, maybe they're good enough friends. Apparently the two talked a fair amount during the whole dog and pony show.

Suter's family is from WI, kind of hockey royalty there, Suter's from the Madison area. No hockey team in WI, close to home would be either CHI or MIN.

Parise signing couldn't have hurt; whether or not they're close friends, it helps to know you're signing onto a team that's going to have other good players.

Of course maybe the whole hometown thing didn't play that big of a part, maybe they just liked the $$$ and years (13! Until they're both 40!) the team was offering as well as the direction team was headed (dumped a bunch of cap space last year and picked up draft picks).

In a way, Suter and Parise are a perfect tandem, in the sense that neither are particularly flashy and neither really jump out at you with amazing skill or physicality...they're just...good.

I have doubts with the Wild's depth and their traditionally boring-ass "if we have 10 SOG over three full periods, we're LIGHTING the opposition up!!" gameplan that they're a shoe-in for a playoff spot with these moves, but both Parise and Suter are not like normal high-priced FAs. They'll put their heads down, work, and shut the fark up, which certainly won't rock the boat in Minny and leave Heatley as the only probable prima donna in that locker room.

Pretty stoked for Minnesota, despite them being a division rival (for the time being, at least). It's good to see one of the not-so-glitzy franchises score big like this.
