Remember back in the days of Reagan when Republican talk radio hosts where outraged at civilized criticism of a sitting president? They claimed it was anti-American and typical of the "Left".

That's different! Civilized criticism of a sitting Republican has no place in public discourse!

I'm sure this had nothing to do with his race, or his perceived religion, but rather was a pointed rebuttal about what they felt are his failed domestic and foreign policies.

Reagan? Hell, I remember being called a traitor, being told to leave the country, being told that it was people like me that threaten the greatness of Murika, and all kinds of other awful things for questioning decisions made by The Bush Administration, and questioning the motives of Dick Cheney. I'd say it was right up until Jan 2009 that anything less than lockstep allegiance to the POTUS was tantamount to treason. Not sure what happened that month, but something completely changed their minds about criticism of the POTUS.

The comments at CNN.com are derptastic as usual. I don't know if this was racist or not, but it's certainly offensive. If you make an effigy of someone, condemn it, and then publicly destroy it, I have to view that as a threat or at least a wish of violence upon that person.

You're being obtuse. I condemned the "Bbbbut Bush effigy" defense specifically; aka, it's OK to be an assclown because both sides do it. When one does that, one defends the content of what's "said," not the mere right to say it. Which makes one an assclown.

I've tried to understand it. I really have. He blames Obama for the current economy (maybe you could make that argument, but he also absolves Bush from any blame) and is convinced that he is really a Muslim and not a real citizen. He basically watches Fox News as a true believer without question. He recites chain letter e-mails like they're gospel that the real media doesn't want to tell you.

I have learned first hand that there really is no way to reason with people like this. His response to the morning news Independence Day story was that it is likely one of the last ones we're going to be able to celebrate if Obama is re-elected.

2012-07-04 03:53:47 PM
I'm pretty sure these are the same people that yell at Bill Maher or the Dixie Chicks for having the gall to question Bush or the Iraqi war.

So far, Obama has avoided invading a country for no reason resulting in the deaths of 5000 Americans. You'd think if they loved the troops so much, they'd realize how awesome Obama is for such things.

I don't know if it's always been this way, but one of the two main political parties in the U.S. has co-opted certain cultural signifiers and activities to the point that it's difficult to participate in these without participating, however unwillingly, in political activity -- devoid of actual policy as this politics may be.

2012-07-04 03:54:57 PM
Remember, making fun of Bush for his many mistakes while giving speeches (something that Obama has been mocked for, as well) is the same as making an effigy of Obama and destroying it at a family-oriented rodeo.

Also, people in Arkansas are entirely familiar with Mexican tradition involving the piñata. *rolls eyes*

Why would you suggest that? Plenty of American citizens speak languages other than English. And plenty of American citizens aren't white people. Would you be of the opinion that someone who isn't white is not american? Or someone who doesn't speak English (constantly) cannot be American?

terriblist: Fart_Machine: A rodeo is a political event?

I don't know if it's always been this way, but one of the two main political parties in the U.S. has co-opted certain cultural signifiers and activities to the point that it's difficult to participate in these without participating, however unwillingly, in political activity -- devoid of actual policy as this politics may be.

i go to rodeos around here every once in a while. they are 100% jesus wrapped in the flag of course everyone here votes republican type events. it doesn't bother me. on the other hand, i think i would actually be shocked if i saw an effigy of the president being burned. perhaps we're just more genteel around here?

This is funny for one reason:

Obama grows up in poverty and, through hard work and debt, becomes not only a lawyer and Senator, but president.

All of these people cheering this could have done the same thing. They would had an easier time as being white does carry some privilege with it. They could have taken loans, worked really hard, and possibly done the same thing. Why didn't they? Because they're ultimately lazy and stupid, just like all bigots. Instead of actually working and having goals, they settle into the same old hillbilly antics of 'learning is the stupid' and 'I'm white, so it doesn't matter, because I'm gonna be rich someday because I'm somehow better than those without my skin color.'

White bigots are all the same: sitting in their trailers, biatching about hard work that they never seem to do, and waiting around for some rich guy to hand out cash while other people of all colors are doing hard work instead of relying on 'I'm rural and white, things are handed out for me' and squealing about how Jesus is going to come and make them win the cosmic lottery or some shiat like that. And now they're playing more of their drama games instead of doing something more constructive than 'scrapping cars' or whatever hillbillies do when they're not raping their own children, playacting instead of doing something with their lives outside of ingesting more high fructose corn syrup and fighting with their own families instead of doing something constructive.

Of course they hate Obama. Obama actually worked for a living. These losers put in two hours a day scrapping old Fords or beating up cattle and think they're entitled to being millionaires. Typical white bigotry: the true welfare queens of America.

Don't Troll Me Bro!: NFA: Remember back in the days of Reagan when Republican talk radio hosts where outraged at civilized criticism of a sitting president? They claimed it was anti-American and typical of the "Left".

I can get health insurance even if I lose my job that I couldn't get before due to pre-existing conditions. My dad got full time job with benefits for a Big 3 contractor after losing his job with a supplier due to the recession Obama inherited (he's educated white collar). My undocumented friend brought here as a child (from the freaking Ukraine) who had stellar grades, works his ass off, etc., can breathe for a few years and continue to be a benefit to the only country he's ever known. My ex who got PTSD (after signing up to fight the 9/11 terrorists and to get money saved for school instead got called again to Iraq the weekbefore finals) can finally get treatment.

I would like more done but there has been a f--k of a lot of change and more hope for myself and those I love thankyouverymuch.

Canadian and American beers are no longer that different. I travel to Belgium several times a year for work. That's what real patriotism is actually about. No place is perfect; criticizing our own country when we fail to live up to our own ideals, and trying to get us to correct our errors is far more patriotic than just being a bunch of cheerleaders yelling "Go Team" all the time.

A lot of people confuse patriotism with jingoism, but they really aren't the same thing. People like Springsteen (and Woody Guthrie) are far more patriotic than Lee Greenwood or any of the "America: Fark Yeah" types will ever be.

Yeah I tried that once 25 years ago. Still can't eat baloney to this day.

hehe last time I had baloney was in a Worcester, MA holding cell about 12 years ago. Dry baloney on white. Only time an adult should eat that sammich I think

To honor this day,

- I will spell "honor" without the "u" you deem superfluous.
- I won't mention any thing that Canada do better than the US
- I will drink a watery American beer (perhaps a dozen) in your honor this evening

Feel free to get Founders, Bells, Great Lakes Brewing, etc...

I drank Labatt on the first but mainly cause it's cheap. And I got plenty drunk on a 8% Michigan brew last Friday, eh.

//I probably misspelled that

Canadian and American beers are no longer that different. I travel to Belgium several times a year for work. I now find most Canadian and American beers to be basically flavorless now but like Canada, the US seems to have more and more microbreweries trying new things so I am hopeful. I will keep an eye open for the brands you mentioned.

Good stuff happening for sure. My favorite beer of all time is an American microbrew (Founders) made with Canadian maple syrup (Canadian Breakfast Stout).

Don't Troll Me Bro!: NFA: Remember back in the days of Reagan when Republican talk radio hosts where outraged at civilized criticism of a sitting president? They claimed it was anti-American and typical of the "Left".

Some of us were actively targeted by the military for being "suspected terrorists" because of our political views. Some of us found our way into military prisons, psych-ops campaigns against us, torture, rape, humiliation, poisoning of friends and family, loss of jobs, illness, and I could go on. These conservatives are the worst traitors in the history of the Republic. The idea that they still hide behind their flags and crosses is the most disgusting thing I can think of, and it makes me angry to this day. One day they will get what's coming back to them

Having done precisely that, I can tell you that you won't get anywhere. First you'll get rehashed faux news talking points. Those debunked, all pretense of rationality goes out the window.

"I can't stand the guy, he's a Muslim for crying out loud!"
"There is NO PROOF that Obama is a Muslim. Stop listening to Fox!"
"I just believe that he is, and that he hates America"
"But.. Why?"
"I just do."

He's quintessentially American, that's why. Serious dissent can be very patriotic. Mob rule and behavior like unto that of a petulant child, on the other hand, is quintessentially Southern. Guntram Shatterhand: Obama grows up in poverty

well, this may be a bit exaggerated. my parents also didn't have any money when they finished med school and we were in cramped quarters for some years but i'd hardly describe my upbringing as "poverty". even "working class" would be an enormous stretch, despite the fact that they were always working and this is where they got the money they done gotten.
obama's mother didn't have much cash personally, but his grandmother was the vice-president of a bank, and i think it would be hard to describe his upbringing as anything other than middle-class (albeit with an interesting detour through indonesia where he most likely did witness poverty more closely than we do in the united states).
lying or exaggerating to prove a point should be undesirable for libs or cons alike...

My favourite complaint against America from the Americans I get to deal with - who are, it seems, often very conservative, watching two-days-out Fox news episodes and DVR'd episodes of the Glenn Beck show - is 'He wants to take our guns.'

To which I ask, 'But hasn't the only federal legislation regarding guns since he took office been about expanding the rules for open-carry in national parks?' Which always causes a double-take because the fact I know that is only more slightly astounding to them than the fact they don't.

'Well, I don't know about that,' and I'm stripping out the Virginian accents here, because I don't want to look like I'm mocking them, 'but he's a democrat - so you KNOW he WANTS to.'

Around this point I realise that they don't even listen to themselves and I just have to let it go. It's this whole family of people.

Now, sure, make an effigy of someone and abuse it, it's crude political speech, but hey, so is calling Bush a farktard (and I did that). But it's when you dig a few inches deeper in those people, to see why they think what they do, why they want to get rid of him... that's when you can learn a lot about them.

(Oh and by the way, civil liberties, procorporate appointments, promulgating a criminally negligent justice system, furthering the distance between America and its wars.)

Guntram Shatterhand: This is funny for one reason:

Yeah i know they burned effigies of Bush during his administration but the big different was that back then they where done at organized anti-government rallies and usually in front of some sort of government complex where that kind of stuff belongs, not at some family orientated event.

Bush really was a scary threat to this country's security, but agreed. It wasn't made into some kind of feel-good mainstream event like in TFA.

Braying like an ass about losing your freedom because you're no longer allowed to take away freedom from others is the Southern way. shiatting on the highly educated because you know in your heart that they're better than you in every respect is the Southern way. I think your complaints would carry a bit more weight if, once in a while, you would tell other Republicans that throwing acid and placing gunsights on political opponents was wrong, creationism is foolish, burning and lynching effigies is a bad idea, and nobody has a civil right to beat up gays and lesbians.

As my tea-party step-father explains it: "People like Rubio and Romney are patriotic and love America, while Obama hates America and is trying to destroy it so the Muslims can take it over". So of course he can't respect the President. That would be un-American.

I really wish I had the patience to find one of these people and question them, purely out of curiosity.

If someone tells me that Obama hates America, I'd like to ask them, "Based on what?"

Based on this:
1. Increased the deficit more than $4 trillion, causing the first-ever downgrade in the U.S. credit rating and for the first time raising serious questions about U.S. financial stability.
2. Issued 106 new major rules that cost U.S. businesses $11 billion in implementation and more than $46 billion each year.
3. Blocked Boeing's new South Carolina factory from opening to assuage his union supporters.
4. Raided a Gibson Guitar factory for violating an arcane India law even though India does not believe the law has been broken.
5. Issued an "ambush" election rule allowing quick unionization and limiting an employer's ability to present reasons for non-unionization.
6. Restricted how companies hire unpaid interns, cutting the link between students and employers.
7. Blocked the construction of the Keystone Pipeline that would have given jobs to thousands of American workers, further reducing the domestic oil supply and forcing our ally Canada to turn to China as a more willing partner.
8. Cut authorization of permits restricting drilling in Gulf and slowed permitting of new oil drilling so our future oil supply will be restricted and gas prices will be higher.
9. Mandated third party certification for all manufacturers participating in the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star program, which has raised costs for manufacturers and created a disincentive for participation in the program.
10. Funded Solyndra and other unworthy companies, wasting taxpayer money but also discouraging other privately funded companies from entering the market.
11. Only moved on Bush free trade agreements and failed to enter one new free trade agreement, even while our competitors have entered many, making U.S. goods more expensive to export.
12. Pushed for passage of card check legislation that would infringe upon the rights of workers and make the United States a less desirable place to open a business.
13. Created a new rule requiring every employer to post notices on union "rights," (found illegal by a federal court in April).
14. Changed rules on unionization votes so the majority of employees no longer need to vote to unionize, allowing easier unionization.
15. Disparaged the city of Las Vegas twice, which led to an immediate and dramatic fall-off in hotel room bookings and hospitality jobs.
16. Proposed onerous restrictions on government officials attending trade shows, threatening vital cooperation between business and government to create jobs.
17. Mandated that every hotel swimming pool have special access for the disabled, causing pools to close or hotels to add expensive add-ons, hurting the hotel industry and employment.
18. Imposed a requirement that every employer with more than 49 employees provide health care insurance or pay a fine.
19. Allowed the United States to become the highest corporate tax nation in the developed world.
20. Required every children's product to undergo expensive testing, threatening thousands of small businesses that make children's products.
21. Demonized businesses and one-percent income earners consistently as greedy.
22. Increased the number of IRS audits of successful job creators while dramatically cutting audits of those reporting no income.
23. Proposed regulating gas fireplaces in homes, threatening a large segment of the market despite no energy rationale.
24. Failed to approve one new nuclear plant, increasing our energy dependence.
25. Defended EPA "strong-arming" of property owners by threatening fines -- March 2012 Supreme Court's unanimously rejected EPA position.
26. Ignored proposals of his own Bipartisan Deficit Commission and thus guaranteed further choking deficits and financial uncertainty.
27. Imposed a 2.3 percent new excise tax on innovative medical devices.
28. Imposed a new investment income "surtax" of 3.8 percent.
29. Raised the Medicare Payroll tax from 2.9 percent to 3.8 percent.
30. Required every individual to buy health insurance as part of his healthcare reform, which the Congressional Budget Office says will cost twice as much as the White House originally advertised.
31. Proposed a seven percent hiring quota for "disabled" workers in every job category for government contractors, creating a new expensive burden to doing business with government.
32. Expanded the definition of "disabled" to include people with diabetes and heart disease, among others, and specified new quotas for hiring under this definition.
33. Opposed "repatriation" of U.S. corporate profits made overseas (and already taxed), thus encouraging U.S. companies to invest those profits in foreign enterprises.
34. Proposed higher taxes for business-use airplanes, raising the cost of many U.S. operations.
35. Sought to give the IRS the power to license all tax preparers, discouraging entrepreneurs by raising the cost to enter the market.
36. Attacked the Supreme Court twice directly, undercutting confidence in the separation of powers.
37. Raided California medical marijuana facilities, harming entrepreneurs and threatening medical treatments.
38. Sought and signed the Dodd-Frank financial reform law with its hundreds of new rules and restrictions that impose billions in new costs on financial companies.
39. Advocated for the "Buffett Rule," which would discourage U.S. investment and barely dent the deficit.
40. Expressed plans to raise the capital gains tax, which would discourage U.S. capital formation and drive investment overseas.
41. Created new emissions standards for industrial boilers that may cost hundreds of thousands of U.S. businesses a total of $14.5 billion.
42. Pursued his campaign pledge to adopt electronic medical records, at an estimated cost of as much as $100 billion. The plan is already costing jobs.
43. Set new energy-use mandates for many products, discouraging innovation and consumer choice and raising product costs.
44. Imposed new restrictions on the number of hours driven by truck drivers, costing more than $400 million with no proven additional safety benefit and raising the cost of goods shipped in the United States.
45. Failed to confront drug company payoffs/rebates to doctors, thus raising the cost of health care.
46. Negotiated secret trademark treaties that are so secret their effects are unknown.
47. Failed to make government more transparent by restricting FOIA requests, according to the Washington Post, making review of government actions difficult.
48. Neglected to do anything about providing guns to Mexico drug cartels, which resulted in the death of U.S. Border Patrol agents, causing worldwide doubt as to U.S. rule of law.
49. Perpetuated the fraud of "green jobs" to sell and justify stimulus funds with little evidence to support the market for these jobs.
50. Investigated leading U.S. companies, such as Amazon, Apple, Google, Intel and Qualcomm, which encouraged other countries to do the same.

You guys are making way too big of a deal about this.

A crude effigy was produced during the rodeo on Saturday night, and then violently beaten and destroyed in response to an announcer's call to the audience: "Who wants to rip Obama's head off?"

See? They're just asking questions.

tony41454: Wayne 985

10. Funded Solyndra and other unworthy companies, wasting taxpayer money but also discouraging other priv ...

Lighten up farkers, it is called freedom of speech.

I know most of up non-freepers will admit that too many Republicans will attack 'liberals' for behavior that they approved a few years ago. To a lesser extent this was true by very liberal fringe groups which are very well kept in check these days.

Accept that too many Republicans are whiny biatches with no sense of humor or grace, and allow them the freedom of speech that they so often attempt to deny others.

Stay classy because they won't.

In my own opinion, I think it is because of how powerful northern economy was compared to the southern. Many in the south distrusted the big businesses in the north. It is not that hard to see when you figure in Robber Barons. Only 3, according to Wikipedia, were southerners.

JFK changed it all. He was a northern pro-union Democrat who believed in civil rights. The south, however, wanted nothing to do with civil rights. I think it became a partisan issue, which is why pro-big business ideology stayed when the political shift happened.

The south was agrarian back then so southern pols would probably not have been pro-business by default because they didn't have much in the way of manufacturing.

I've been to a rodeo. The core of a rodeo is the burning desire to see an actual person stomped into the dirt by a large, uncontrollable animal force. That desire is repeatedly frustrated, because rodeo performers still cling to some semblance of an instinct for self-survival (why a rodeo performer wishes to stay alive is a mystery to me). So it does not surprise me at all that people who go to rodeos to quench their bloodlust cheer loudly when an effigy of The Evil Kenyan is torn to pieces.

But then it surprises me that rodeo audiences don't routinely turn on each other, burn the place down, and hold cannibal sacrifices.

If it's an explicit call to violence from the government's point of view, why are people who do this not routinely sent to prison? If I walk around with a sign saying "shoot Obama in the head", I know I'd be locked up, so why aren't they? I'll tell you why. Because it's not a call to violence at all, only an expression of hatred which is constitutionally protected. Even the government, as incompetent as it is, still knows this better than you, and Alphax.

The depressing part of all of this is that I happen to like rodeos, and bull-riding in particular. Seeing this kind of stupidity is just another way of excluding moderates, like myself, from these self-identifying rituals.

Your statement was that they had avoided an explicit call to violence, I pointed out that you had missed the part where they asked the crowd who wanted to "rip Obama's head off" right before attacking the effigy. Seems like I had a valid point. I said nothing about their rights, which doesn't matter, because you really aren't 'defending their right to free speech', you are trying to justify their actions and the 'defending their right to free speech' is usually a safe tactic, but you have to back it up by actually defending their rights, not by continually trying to define just how 'violent' you think their actions may or may not be.

BraveNewCheneyWorld: "who wants to rip a head off a doll" != "let's kill Obama"

You're right, glad you can see the obvious, and admit it readily.

For the slow ones out there that can't follow along, I'll clarify though:

1. Put a human effigy out on the arena ground.

2. Make sure it looks somewhat like the person that you want to atack by proxy.

3. Invite people to 'rip its head off', and specifically mention the intended target.

4. Watch as the people attack it, meaning for their blows to land on the person it is an effigy of.

Like I said, I know you get it, but there are some dumb ones out there who don't get it, so the extra explanation was needed for their benefit, not yours of course.

You are correct. Fox has quite literally programmed their listeners to respond with a anger response when they hear someone speak Obama's name.

I used to be a big consumer of conservative media. Then one day years ago, I looked at the cover of the American Rifleman. On that cover was a picture of Shumer, Pelosi and someone else. The very sight of these people triggered complete rage. I was literally angry at just seeing their image. At that very point I also realized that I KNEW NOTHING ABOUT THEM. I didn't know why I hated them, just that I was somehow tricked into hating them. I see this rage response with many people when Obama's name is mentioned. This is why I believe Obama has a chance of losing the election. BILLIONS have been spent programming the public to jump to the tune of our wealthy overlords.

Just once, I would love to sit with a few conservatives and show them pictures of various conservative targets. Then ask them precisely why they're angry at these people...

Look, mindreader, I don't happen to like teabaggers or any of the stupid shiat surrounding them, but torching an effigy is not a call to violence. End of farking story.

In what universe? Not this one.

If there was any real threat, the secret service would be all over these people.

Except this is an effigy, and we're talking about 'threatening' not 'loving'. There's nothing threatening about beating up a dummy. There are a *lot* of politicians that I would love to hang in effigy, but none I really would want to see hang in real life.

Agreed. Only an incredibly stupid moron would think a few thousand US citizens would like to see their elected president dead.
