Don't Troll Me Bro!: NFA: Remember back in the days of Reagan when Republican talk radio hosts where outraged at civilized criticism of a sitting president? They claimed it was anti-American and typical of the "Left".

Reagan? Hell, I remember being called a traitor, being told to leave the country, being told that it was people like me that threaten the greatness of Murika, and all kinds of other awful things for questioning decisions made by The Bush Administration, and questioning the motives of Dick Cheney. I'd say it was right up until Jan 2009 that anything less than lockstep allegiance to the POTUS was tantamount to treason. Not sure what happened that month, but something completely changed their minds about criticism of the POTUS.

I believe there was a blackout.

To honor this day,

- I will spell "honor" without the "u" you deem superfluous.
- I won't mention any thing that Canada do better than the US
- I will drink a watery American beer (perhaps a dozen) in your honor this evening

Turn off the Tragically Hip and crank some Springsteen while your at it.

I hate to fit the cliche but The Hip are actually my favorite band. I don't like Rush so there's that (many Canadians don't). Not a Springsteen fan but I understand why he is worshiped. How about I crank up the Black Keys or Jack White.

And soon enough randomjsa will come waltzing in here to defend these hatemongers, claiming that someone on the left did something bad too, so that makes the hatred he and these assholes display justified and patriotic.

elchip: Cannot believe what I'm reading from you "Shocked and Dumbfounded" liberals! When late night comics rant and rave about conservatives you laugh, huh? Let's stop this Victim's Syndrome...I am a grandparent of a bi-racial beautiful child...I am from Greenwood...my kids go to school in Greenwood... if the clowns were making jokes about President Bush's literacy issues and lack of speaking skilz would this have made National News? STOP IT WITH THE RACE CARD ALREADY! I absolutely cannot for a minute believe this made the news...stop "commenting" and go enjoy your day! If you happen to be an Obama supporter so be it...we live in more of a conservative area...typically Republican driven...when comedians make fun of us and our belief system, our right to bear arms, our "redneck" behaviors in general...we laugh WITH THEM! Please stop the excuses! The fact that some of us will vote conservative is NOT because of O's skin color...it is because we are seeking HOPE AND CHANGE that we didnt find this time around!

I can get health insurance even if I lose my job that I couldn't get before due to pre-existing conditions. My dad got full time job with benefits for a Big 3 contractor after losing his job with a supplier due to the recession Obama inherited (he's educated white collar). My undocumented friend brought here as a child (from the freaking Ukraine) who had stellar grades, works his ass off, etc., can breathe for a few years and continue to be a benefit to the only country he's ever known. My ex who got PTSD (after signing up to fight the 9/11 terrorists and to get money saved for school instead got called again to Iraq the weekbefore finals) can finally get treatment.

I would like more done but there has been a f--k of a lot of change and more hope for myself and those I love thankyouverymuch.

Canadian and American beers are no longer that different. I travel to Belgium several times a year for work. I now find most Canadian and American beers to be basically flavorless now but like Canada, the US seems to have more and more microbreweries trying new things so I am hopeful. I will keep an eye open for the brands you mentioned.

That's what real patriotism is actually about. No place is perfect; criticizing our own country when we fail to live up to our own ideals, and trying to get us to correct our errors is far more patriotic than just being a bunch of cheerleaders yelling "Go Team" all the time.

A lot of people confuse patriotism with jingoism, but they really aren't the same thing. People like Springsteen (and Woody Guthrie) are far more patriotic than Lee Greenwood or any of the "America: Fark Yeah" types will ever be.

I seem to recall, five or six years ago, Republicans saying that if you don't fully support the President, you're with the terrorists.

I wonder what dark shadow could have blackened the hearts of these people.

They feel the president nags them. He nags them about healthcare, he nags them about the environment and he nags them about the role of the federal government.

These people just don't like attractive and successful African-Americans.

Some of us were actively targeted by the military for being "suspected terrorists" because of our political views. Some of us found our way into military prisons, psych-ops campaigns against us, torture, rape, humiliation, poisoning of friends and family, loss of jobs, illness, and I could go on. These conservatives are the worst traitors in the history of the Republic. The idea that they still hide behind their flags and crosses is the most disgusting thing I can think of, and it makes me angry to this day. One day they will get what's coming back to them

He's quintessentially American, that's why. Serious dissent can be very patriotic. Mob rule and behavior like unto that of a petulant child, on the other hand, is quintessentially Southern. Braying like an ass about losing your freedom because you're no longer allowed to take away freedom from others is the Southern way. shiatting on the highly educated because you know in your heart that they're better than you in every respect is the Southern way. Guntram Shatterhand: Obama grows up in poverty

well, this may be a bit exaggerated. my parents also didn't have any money when they finished med school and we were in cramped quarters for some years but i'd hardly describe my upbringing as "poverty". even "working class" would be an enormous stretch, despite the fact that they were always working and this is where they got the money they done gotten.
obama's mother didn't have much cash personally, but his grandmother was the vice-president of a bank, and i think it would be hard to describe his upbringing as anything other than middle-class (albeit with an interesting detour through indonesia where he most likely did witness poverty more closely than we do in the united states).
lying or exaggerating to prove a point should be undesirable for libs or cons alike...
