Actually, over the 10 years we owned her last VW, a 2002 Golf, we didn't have that many issues outside of a sunroof drain that kept getting clogged. The engine and electrical were solid, and didn't even have any issues when we had a remote start installed aftermarket. Compared to the thousands we dumped into her old car, a 1994 Cavalier that blew an engine head gasket midway through us owning it and seemed to eat brake pads for lunch, the Golf was actually a pretty reliable car. Sure, it wasn't as trouble free as my 2005 Corolla, but few cars are as bulletproof as that Toyota has been. Hopefully we'll have similar luck with the Beetle.
