Madonna's version is an even more loathed staple of Worst Covers Of All Time lists.

No, I'm pretty sure this is common knowledge.

As bad covers go, this runs neck-and-neck with Hilary Duff's version of "My Generation."

Every time I hear that song I think of the "Al TV" episode on Much Music that ended with him wrecking a sand sculpture before cutting to the video. To this day I still have no idea if it was an accident or not.

I wasn't supposed to know "The Saga Begins" was a parody of "American Pie"? Or the author was just grasping at straws to get to a round number?

Screw you subby, that movie is a part of my coming of age years. It ushered in a new era of movie comedy, and contributed more to pop culture than the song.

And that song, btw, blows my ass. 8 minutes long of the same f*cking hook over and over and over and over.

Pretty much what I surmised from the premise.

Still, kudos to the filmmakers for managing to keep Tara Reid sober for a decent chunk of time.

My (then) 8 year old daughter came home one day, singing this take-off (Pops to You Tube)

She didn't have the tune quite right, so at first I didn't recognize it, then I searched for it, and, just dang.

/I actually like the original, but yes, in moderate doses, not replayed every time I tune to a "Classic" rock station.

I worked at a MOR AM station then and this was a good representation of the playlist. It doesn't show what was moving up and what was moving down but still a good idea of what we had.

Also, we tended to play, on "top 40" stations a selection that sliced five years or more so it was never just the same 20-40 songs over and over. So, even #1 American Pie might only be played two in a six hour shift.

Most AM stations only played side one. Only FM played the 8 minute version. Same with Lalya, there was an AM version which trashed the piano section to cut the song down to 3:change.

I realized that songwriters should make their statements and move on, maintaining a dignified silence

Yeah, well if no one understands or can figure out the meaning, it's not much of a statement, is it?

I'd prefer no scratch over the atrocity that American Pie turned into.

During college I was a DJ on a local classic rock station and with our shiatty gear we could only play two songs back to back without putting on new discs. I figured out pretty quick that the best way to take a break/knock out a quicky in the back room with a co-ed/run across the street and slam a beer/eat dinner was to put on American Pie and the long version of Freebird back to back. If I remember right, it gives you almost 20 minutes.
