(Gizmodo)   Don't worry, that mysterious island being built in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay is not going to be an evil mastermind's hidden lair. It's the Army's. Nothing to see citizen, move along. (With time lapse video goodness)   (gizmodo.com) divider line 54

Video from Space Shows Army Creating an Island Off the Coast of the US
We don't really say the Western Shore has a "coast." Certainly the "coast" of the Western Shore isn't the edge of the US.

Anyway here's hoping it's the new Jurassic Park and the "terns" are archaeopterix and life will get more interesting/apocalyptic on the Western Shore real soon.

/No one really says "Western Shore" either

It was chosen as a dumping ground for material dredged from Baltimore harbor, material which had previous just been dumped in open water. So, instead they are rebuilding the island that had previusly been destroyed by erosion. Win-win. Nothing nefarious about it.

Hmm, I guess if you are dredging shipping channels and need to dump it somewhere might as well build an island bird sanctuary. I wonder if it's isolated enough to be free of cats, rats, and snakes.

Also, this is a 30 year project. The Army CoE is just about the only federally funded agency that can make plans longer than the next election cycle.

Given how strong the military and government presence is in that area. I am not shocked at this but actually relieved. That area would be target number one for enemy forces. Wipe that out and you will sorely cripple much of the US's defenses. You would want a fortified military island to protect everything.

The amazing thing is not the island, but how you can change the perception simply by choosing a different starting point in time for the comparison. If you take Diaz's approach and start in 1998 after most of the island has sunk into the harbor it looks like you are building something out of nothing, but if you go back to the start of the 1900's you see that the island was once pretty large and it looks like a restoration project. Perspective is everything.

The island had split into three pieces by the late 1800s. At that time, the larger piece was home to the town of Valiant, a community of 100 residents, with its own post office, school, general store, and a sawmill. Its sawmill may have contributed to the island's erosion by cutting down all of the trees, whose roots held the sandy soil together.

As always, we just farked ourselves over. Just didnt know it at the time.

From the wiki:

Poplar Island, located on the Chesapeake Bay, was first seen by Spanish explorer Juan Menendez de Marques in 1573. It is part of Talbot County, Maryland and is currently being rebuilt by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers using dredged mud from the Baltimore Harbor, located approximately 30 miles north/north-west of the island. The project's current estimate of cost is $667 million[1] and is, according to schedule, going to be completed in year 2027.
