that's because owls, assface.

owls are the greatest threat our kitties face in the great outdoors. if you see an owl in your neighborhood, kill it now, before it eats another kitty. they are remorseless flying killing machines that will not stop, or cannot be bargained with. they absolutely will not stop until they have eaten your kitty, and your jack russels. shot them on sight, burn down the pine trees they live in, and make our world a safer place for all kitties.

thank you.

Yeah, if a bunch of people are staring at the cat in the tree, it won't come down. Ignore it, it'll figure out a way down.

Cats do get stuck in trees, usually it is inexperienced cats that have not learned how to get down so they just keep climbing higher.

farm8.staticflickr.com

This little lady was stuck in a tree in 14º weather for several days before being rescued. The local Humane Society, gas, and electric companies all refused to help until a local TV station was due the next morning to do a report. If she had been coming down at night, her foot prints would have been left in the snow.

She was probably an I/O (indoor/outdoor) who was abandoned to the outdoors because some idiot thought "she's a cat she'll learn to survive." They often don't. Knowing her and how terrified she was of my cat-respectful cat-loving dog, I can see how she would have gotten stuck. She may not be the brightest of god's children, but she is gentle, calm, sweet, and indoor-only now. I found out about her via Fark.

It took me a long time to find a really good tree service company but if they refused to help in a situation like that they could just take my measly $2k a year tree maintenance out of their budget -- after I gave them the verbal beating of their life, of course.

I haven't seen a cat skeleton in a tree but I have seen a dead cat stuck in between two tree branches. It wasn't wounded - it just got stuck and died.

They are not necessarily too stupid to get down - just too scared.

Huntceet: All domestic cats running loose outdoors should be shot. They are a scourge on the bird population. They're an introduced species and as such have no protection status. Further more all cat people should be closely watched for catness behavior.

Like carrying a bow and killing children?

I just lost my kitty, Emmett, to an owl attack :-( I'm very sad and $500 poorer (rushed him to the vet on a Sunday night) but can't agree with your suggested course of action either.

/raises beer to Emmett and all my kitties and dogs on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge

Hello, Sam. This is Bob of the Fire Department. Yeah, Elvira and the kids are fine. We have a little problem here. We have a dumb cat up a tree, it's sixty feet and we only have a fifty foot ladder.

Yeah, I thought of calling a guy with a 15 foot ladder, but the branches are kind of shaky up there above forty feet.

Yeah, we also discussed a tree surgeon, but the homeowners don't like the idea.

Well, Sam, I was wondering if you guys down at the water department could turn up the water pressure here on Elm Street? You can? Great. That ought to do the job.

We got a tree surgeon after 3 days. The local paper came out and took photos, so he didn't even charge us.

While there may not be cat skeletons IN trees, there are probably some number NEXT TO trees.

I once saw a squirrel fall a good distance out of a tree. The impact made a surprisingly loud noise. It slowly crawled away into the underbrush. Ahh the circle of life.

Actually, I think they put the poor thing back in the tree just to take a picture. That's just sick.

You're such a bleeding heart. The reason no one would do it is because it costs money and THEY COME DOWN WITHOUT HELP!!! This isn't Leave it to Beaver, and I seriously doubt anything but small-town crap was. Get over yourself.

Also works well for bark-bark-barking dogs. Doesn't hurt the dog, and any evidence is dried up in seconds.

Oh hells... Forget the fire dept or anyone else...

Just find a neighborhood runt to pay $5 to climb as high as he can, then start swaying the tree top as hard as he can, forcing the cat out with a little inertial help...

Just kidding, sort of...
