I'm re-watching Weeds, so getting a kick....

tillerman35: Typical NetFlix user experience:

Day1: OMG!!! There's so much stuff on there. WATCH EVERYTHING!
Day2: Better sleep.
Month 1: I want this. And this. And this. And... why the fark do they always recommend Lesbian Dramas?
Month 2: Same crap as before. Well, there's always Futurama and those kinky Japanese cartoons.
Month 3: Wait- I just noticed something. They don't have any of the really GOOD movies. And the last season of any decent show is always missing. Fuuuuuuuuhhhhhhh.
Month 4: I think I'll check out what's on NetFlix. Click.... Nah. Click... Puhleeze- I didn't watch that the last three months you tried to tell me it was 'recently added.' Click... Jeezus cripes, why do they keep recommending Lesbian Dramas, Lesbian Comedies, and Movies With A Strong Female Lead? I only clicked on that movie once, and one of those chicks looked like a dude! Oh hell, forget about it. [OFF]

Recent movies? Sure- if they sucked. Good movies? Sure- if they came out so long ago nobody remembers them. Classic films? Sure- but only if they're not REAL classics. Your favorite actor/actress? Sure- but not in any good movies. Your favorite genre? Sure- but only the crappy movies in that category (unless you really like Lesbian Dramas, which apparently is 9/10ths of NetFlix's catalog).

Then you discover how awesome some old movies and foreign movies are.

The past few months, I've been using Netflix to watch:

Star Trek: DS9 - start to finish.
Warehouse 13
Kids shows for my son.

Some of my favorite old movies when nothing is on cable (Demolition Man, for example)

Wife and I watched Lost start to finish over the course of a few weeks since we never watched it on cable.

I realize it's the cool thing on Fark to hate on Netflix, and yes, just like at any old-school video rental store, there's a lot of crap on there, but there really is quite a bit of decent stuff on there, especially for the price.

The people in the know understand that Netflix is being squeezed by the same media assholes that have been screwing things up since the beginning of media.

IE, Netflix prices had to go up because the movie folks are charging them more.

// The only failing of Netflix was not communicating that well.

Also, before Netflix, I didn't bother with movies much (blockbuster/hollywood video was a PITA). I'm not driving to a video store to return a video to avoid a fine after I've just worked a 10-12 hour shift ... but I will walk to the mailbox.

And since then, I have watched an ungodly amount of shiat on Netflix (mostly as background noise while I was plugging away at some java or perl code, or tweaking some data report on the laptop.

// I keep track of what I've watched by rating everything I watched.

// Ratings: 1484,

Like how they accepted a ton of cash from Blockbuster to delay movie releases to other companies.

Someone that cared about their consumers would have told blockbuster to go packing. Delay our rental releases, WTF are you smoking?

// There are some very legitimate reasons people don't like those folks, beyond simply money. But money is a good starting point.

// Give us more money, yes, even for old ass movies that have had the same licensing cost for years. Not that it costs us any more money to provide you with that license, since you host the video, and it's your bandwidth that streams the movie to your customers, because fark you Netflix that's why.

azmoviez: I'm shocked that Thor and a few other more modern movies are available.

Is that Thor or Almighty Thor?

The problem I felt with Netflix was that their selection seemed to tend towards shiat put out by The Asylum. Things like Transmorphers and Almighty Thor.

And no cable bill.

This a viable solution, except for HBO and some sports.

If you know someone with hbo and ask nicely, hbo go rocks.

For sports espn3.com is pretty good for ncaa basketball and football. I have to hitup the sports bar a couple times a year but can ushually stream what I want or its ota.

Ive been very happy with the streaming service. They've cleaned up the streaming video it's pretty damned close to broadcast quality. Close enough where it isn't distracting. We've been watching a lot of series we missed on TV.

The search on the PS3 could be better, but most of the time just load up my instant queue with selections from my PC anyway, now I have a galaxy tab 7.7 so I'll probably just use that instead.

Speaking of PS3, get a remote for it. The controllers are a pain to use.

sure haven't: Netflix is number 1!! Netflix is number 1!!

Of course it is, because it's the only option. There is no challenging service. And as soon as there is, Netflix will die. Or get good. Either one.
(Roku and others don't have the same setup as Netflix and are not comparable)

Oh and:

MadSkillz: Go to "What's new in Netflix Canada"'if you want to see why the service sucks ass.

THIS.

You mean other than Hulu Plus and Amazon Prime?

Just signed up for Amazon Prime last month, and I'm loving it. The interface is a bit quirky, but it's not too shabby. Dropped cable, and now only have Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime. I'm saving $120 a month this way. I couldn't be happier.

How does roku do for sporting events? I'm assuming there is not much on since its all network based, if college football was on the internet I would not need cable either.

Roku will work with MLBs streaming (every game is able to be streamed, for 65 a year, a little high in my opinion). I think this fall they will unveil a NFL, NHL, and NBA streaming.... not sure what will be available for college.

What do you get from Amazon VOD that you don't get from the other 2? I was checking it out, but it seemed very similar to NF. I mean stuff you don't have to pay extra for.

About 80% of it seems to be the same to me. There are a few things on either that are different but amazon/NF are very similar. I figure the amazon vod is just a bonus for having prime, the free shipping makes it worth it. I like watching F Word and some other UK shows not on netflix as well.

How I Met Your Mother is missing the Bro Rules at the very ending after the credits - FuuuuUUUUUU
I always liked seeing those when I watched it on TV.

I have 3 kids under 10, so it is great for our family. But their web site sucks for filtering. I use this site:

I wonder how many of those "hours" were me reloading the same friggin' show multiple times when "we are unable to play this title at this time"...

//And it's not my internet connection, several times I have been on my laptop and running NetFlix through the Wii. NetFlix would give me this error in the middle or a program or movie, but I would have no connection issues on my laptop. I also get this error if I'm NOT using my laptop, so it's not my laptop interfering with my Wii connecting, either.

WalkingSnake: /not sure what you're mad about or what you're trying to say

Blockbuster paid the industry millions and millions of dollars to release DVDs to them earlier. And the way that was done is by increasing the delay to other companies (redbox, netflix, etc).

So the movie industry was basically saying "fark you" to netflix, and all of their consumers.

// there were a ton of other schemes going on at the time as well (IE, Time Warner delaying DVD releases to them in exchange for lower rental fees, "you people aren't buying enough DVDs, so we're going to make you wait longer before you can rent them, nyahhhh.") Basically, the industry is to be hated for its business practices which don't have the interests of the consumer in mind at all.

You have not disqualified that the Wii itself is in errors.

The Wii connects fine for everything else, I only have issues when using netflix.

I like that Netflix has a respectable selection of documentaries and educational material. That, and the usual lineup of Family Guy, Futurama, South Park, Trailer Park Boys, etc. I ended up dropping cable and sticking with Netflix and NHL GameCenter for PS3. (Although I hate the blackout restrictions and occasional choppy frame rate with GameCenter.) I can watch something entertaining, educational, and my hockey for less than half of what cable was costing me.

Before the 2009 Sherlock Holmes movie with Robert Downey Jr. was on Netflix, the gf and I had a good laugh one night after we watched 10 minutes of this movie
http://movies.netflix.com/movie/Sherlock_Holmes/70128276
before realizing it wasn't the right one (it didn't have as clear a warning in the description then)

We clued in when I was like "I'm pretty sure RDJ had appeared by this point when I saw it in theaters"

An update for Netflix Wii just came out a couple days ago -- try the update and see if it makes a difference.

Hours do not = dollars.

Amount of money made now does not = amount of money made had they just left it alone.

Still not going back to netflix regardless.

Basily Gourt: I never understood the hate. For $8 a month, what were people expecting?

I love it. You really have to put the effort into searching, but there are websites all over the place that can help you with that.

A simple Google search of "Watch [movie title] online free" will yield a ton of results. Some of those sites offer DVD quality on movies that just showed up at the theater within the past few days. Right now, I'm rather fond of Teh Cake (for TV shows) and LetMeWatchThis for movies.
