Forty-Two: Getting away from the Burton discussion, I'm really impressed by how Wilder phrased his criticisms. What a classy guy.

To match the shoes with the jacket is fey. To match the shoes with the hat is taste.

I need to find a way to incorporate this into my daily routine.

Yes it did. Saw the original when it came out: it was too trippy weird for us kids and it just plain sucks as an adult.

Gene Wilder's creepy Wonka luring in children with candy...

Compared to stunted manchild Depp as Wonka, acting for all the world like an extra molestery version of Michael Jackson.

John Buck 41: stewbert: I guess now we love Gene Wilder on Fark now. I hated the Willy Wonka movie, but I'll readily admit Wilder was great. However, what else did he do that was noteworthy?

Ever heard of a Mel Brooks production called Young Frankenstein? It's fairly obscure; not well-known at all.

Corporate Self: Willder's Wonka comes off as eccentric, but lovable.

Depp's is more of a creepy sociopath..

He reminded me of Michael Jackson.

In some interview I saw, Depp said he played Wonka as a really stoned George Bush.

peterthx: Nope. It worked as a drug trip, but not as a kid's movie (I was 3 when I first saw it, back in 1971...scared the shiat out of me).

The SNL sketch did it best when they have Wonka interrupt the tunnel scene and say "Wait, this is a children's movie? Really?"

Sorry to trump your O.G. "back in the day" card, but I too saw it when it came out, and was also three, and I loved it to this day.

Neeek: Ken VeryBigLiar: brigid_fitch: Willy Wonka was superbly done, even if it strayed from the book.

It strayed to the point Dahl hated it with a passion.

Dahl wished he could write as good as that movie.

If Dahl had his way, the movie would have ended with Grandpa Joe shouting "yippie" after learning that Charlie would be getting the factory. Director Mel Stuart called in screenwriter David Seltzer who had been doing uncredited rewrites for the movie (the literary quotes, which Dahl denounced as "pretentious", were his contribution). He pleaded "I can't end my movie with 'yippie', I need something better." So David Seltzer improvised the "don't forget what happened to the man who got everything he ever wanted" dialogue on the spot. I'm guessing Dahl didn't like that either.
