Raspil: something is wrong with you if you honestly believe this. the original was genius when i was a kid and seeing it again as an adult the Depp/Burton wank was just that, a wank. There was no soul or passion in it and the kids were totally absurd. the children ruined the remake, unlike the original. Gene Wilder is a sir.

Nope. It worked as a drug trip, but not as a kid's movie (I was 3 when I first saw it, back in 1971...scared the shiat out of me).

The SNL sketch did it best when they have Wonka interrupt the tunnel scene and say "Wait, this is a children's movie? Really?"

/not trolling either

Damn, Joan Severance was hot. I remember the scene where Gene holds her at bay by pretending his boner is a gun in his pocket

Wilder was so concerned about portraying "mincing" and "fey" aspects to the clothing you'd have thought they'd cast Rock Hudson.

Fun fact: though Willy Wonka is described in the book as being a little old man with a goatee, Wilder was only 38 and Depp was only 42 when they portrayed him.

/according to Wiki, Nic Cage and Jim Carrey were considered for the role
//(shudder)

mikemoto: No offense to Johnny Depp and Tim Burton (who I both like), but this movie did NOT need to be remade.

peterthx: Yes it did. Saw the original when it came out: it was too trippy weird for us kids and it just plain sucks as an adult.

Gene Wilder's creepy Wonka luring in children with candy...

Sorry to trump your O.G. "back in the day" card, but I too saw it when it came out, and was also three, and I loved it to this day.

Maybe you were just a pussy toddler?

DeaH: FloydA: Ambivalence: mikemoto: No offense to Johnny Depp and Tim Burton (who I both like), but this movie did NOT need to be remade.

Agreed. You run a risk when you remake a brilliant classic that you will fall short compared to the original. Johnny Depp is an exceptional performer but the remake was subpar compared to the original.

I have to disagree. Don't get me wrong, the Wilder version is the better movie, but the Depp version was closer to the book. It's like comparing "Blade Runner" to "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" Both are good, but they aren't the same.

Actually, I think the Depp version is a total perversion of the book. The book was about Charlie and the chocolate factory. Even though the first movie is called Willy Wonka, it's about Charlie. Gene Wilder plays plays Will as a sort of a chaos agent, a grownup who seems capricious and has secrets. This is how adults seem to children. Heck, it's how the people with power often seem to adults over whom they have power. Wilder's Willy is far more the Willy of the book.

Ironically, the movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is far more about Willy and his perceptions of the world than it is about Charlie. The movie turns Willy into the central character. It becomes about a change in Willy. More disturbingly, it gives Will a strange dental back-story. This centrality of the adult character is a perversion of Dahl's story. Also, in the book, Willy does turn out to be a benevolent character. No one is really harmed. Willy just wanted to find the exact, right caretaker of his wondrous domain. In the movie, Willy-as-played-by-Depp actually kicks Charlie out of the factory, and Willy must under-go a huge psychic change before he comes to see the good of Charlie.

You know, that is the first time anyone has ever disagreed with me about a movie and made me thing "oh, yeah, I can see that- good point."

I still like both movies (for different reasons), and I disagree with you on some details, but you made me think. Thank you.

(Enjoy your free month.)

bhcompy: lohphat: How many songs can anyone hum (let alone remember) from the Depp version?

Well, they're easy to rememeber. It's Danny Elfman. Kind of a one trick pony. Think of a bombastic synth song and there you go.

I liked the electric guitars on the Mike TV song.

I almost posted this exact thing in the candy thread a couple days ago. They started making Oompas again but they are not the same and not as good. The are now peanut butter balls covered in chocolate and candy shell. Something about the previous 50-50 of those ingredients made them magical.

Willder's Wonka comes off as eccentric, but lovable.

Ken VeryBigLiar: brigid_fitch: Willy Wonka was superbly done, even if it strayed from the book.

It strayed to the point Dahl hated it with a passion.

And Stephen King hates Kubrick's The Shining with the intensity of a thousand suns. Doesn't make it a bad movie.

I guess now we love Gene Wilder on Fark now. I hated the Willy Wonka movie, but I'll readily admit Wilder was great. However, what else did he do that was noteworthy? Stir Crazy was Prior, I haven't seen it in years, but it was Richard that made it for me.

Never watched the remake. No interest.

Ever heard of a Mel Brooks production called Young Frankenstein? It's fairly obscure; not well-known at all.

There was also that small-time affair that nobody saw called Blazing Saddles. It's a surprisingly quotable movie, but I've never seen anybody quote it on Fark.

brigid_fitch: And Stephen King hates Kubrick's The Shining with the intensity of a thousand suns.

This is overstating the case. In his Danse Macabre, King makes a list of favorite books and movies in the genre, putting an asterisk by the ones he was particularly impressed with. Kubrick's The Shining got an asterisk.

What I gather from King is that Kubrick's film is a great movie, but it gets King's story wrong.
