Great proof:

Bad things happen, therefore God does not exist.

It's interesting how people think that God's ultimate priority is human comfort, or human longevity. Why is a three year old dying any less "loving" than an 80 year old dying? Wouldn't a loving God have an infinite supply of immortal humans, by your standard? Anyone who believes in God realizes that earthly existence is but a reflection in a dirty mirror. Those who don't believe in God understandably focus on their present state. I have no problem believing in an omnipotent, loving God that allows humans to die, and even suffer.

Best wishes to the kid.

5. GREAT advice we found from a Cancer survivor...
When you call, write, or stop by to sit with me........Make me SMILE. Make me LAUGH. Make me GIGGLE. Treat me like you've always treated me BEFORE. I want to feel NORMAL as often as possible, especially by friends and loved ones!

Well, that's some awkward reasoning...what if your family and loved ones never made you smile or laugh before...then, in fact you're not looking to be normal, you're looking to forget for a moment the situation you are in. And that's generally the point. What a pile. Why not just say, "please try and distract me from my own mortality." That I can deal with. And I'd chooose to deal with it with balloon animals.

Too much of this benefit shiat going on. Everywhere I go it is benefit after benefit. You need to stop doing this people! If you or your children get sick, you should NOT ask the whole farking world for help. Its a cheap and desperate way to make others feel sorry for you. Yes, it is very sad about the Ryan kid but guess what, he's not the only kid in the world with cancer.

That's awful. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Meaning, the farker's friend is three years old. It didn't say "3 year-old farker."

This is very poignant for me, coming today on the first anniversary of the death of my bf from lung cancer. He had suffered with Cancer all his life having lost a leg, half a lung and an eye to it. But he never gave up and never stopped smiling, even towards his last days.

My love and very best wishes to the family. Keep us updated.

No, I just find it odd that a Farker would have a 3 year old friend. It is more likely that it was a Farker's friend that had a kid that was 3 years old that had lymphoma.

So take your statement about sub-par understanding and stick it where the sun don't shine.

I certainly don't want to start a flame war of any kind, religious or otherwise, but one question I would like to ask is:

How do I know this is a legitimate case I should donate money to?

In IL a woman told everyone her son has cancer. She is undergoing prosecution for collecting tons of money from the people in her sons school, and the neighborhood.

If this is legitimate, then I my heart goes out to him, and the family.

2003-11-13 10:06:07 AM
I can't stand children, but I feel for this family and this boy.
I don't believe in god, but I agree this isn't the thread to discuss that.
Human pain is pain no matter if a who or what is responsible or not caring.
As fellow humans we can still try to ease someone else's pain. Only sharing a smile is something we can all do.
Good luck, little man. Enjoy the sunshine on your life even if its from a window by your bedside.
Okay, I'm teary-eyed now.

But your point is well taken :)

I was with my daughter when she had her appendix out 2 years ago, and that was a simple thing compared to this. Hang in there folks.

Unfortunately, I don't have any extra fundage to share right now... However, I send my best wishes to the family. Hopefully, everything will turn out OK. If I lived in the NoVA area, I would donate blood, cook dinner in a heartbeat. You will be in my thoughts...

It sounds like the kid is at INOVA Fairfax Hospital (or something like that). I was born in Fairfax County Hospital, which I assume is now INOVA.

Good question. Although you don't know me, I can personally vouch for the legitimacy of the case. I posted the link -- they are close friends. Also, there is enough verifiable information on the website that you could check it out if you wanted.
Thank you Farkers!!

I wish all the best for this sick little fella, and his family.

Hi Mr. Entropy,

You must understand I'm not being disrespectful when I say this...

Seeing as I don't know you, and this IS an online forum, it makes me extremely skeptical.

AS for the website, I did view it... can you point me to the information that verifies your claim?

Again, if this is legitimate, I'm not being disrespectful, just careful.

2003-11-13 10:20:49 AM
now that i've given money to one kid with cancer, i can safely sleep in my comfortable bed, while millions of other children die from starvation and war around the world.

but they're not american, so screw 'em.

In a way I hope this is a scam, since lymphoma is such a horrible disease (it killed my father). I would like to give some cash but don't want to be another internet sucker and inadvertently help some ugly chick buy some new tits...

I will keep the little guy in mind, while I am shooting at all my family members today. ;-)

The one good thing about this thread is that it opened my eyes to lymphoma, just like my eyes were opened to cystic fibrosis when I heard my cousin got it.

If you really want to help, donate to the Lymphoma Research Foundation.

Donating to one individual child will not help anyone.

2003-11-13 10:26:23 AM
Either (a) it's a scam or (b) the kid's dead anyway and the project's a money-sink. Don't bother, guys.

On a regular basis? ;-)

Best of luck to this little guy. Stories like this always hit me hard, especially when I think of how cancer kills more than any other disease but, since it's not as politicized as others, doesn't get the attention (reseach money) it needs.

I disagree. By all means donate to the Lymphoma Research Foundation if you want to, but the advantage of donating to a single case is the money is less likely to be wasted by an innefficient organisation, and more likely to go to better the life of a sufferer. The cure and treatment are both worthy causes.

2003-11-13 10:31:09 AM
Sorry, I meant treatment and research into a cure are both worthy causes.

Dish Are you on crack? It's possibly the most talked about chronic disease in the world...why do you think even Fark has the smart-ass headline "still no sure for cancer"?

Thank god your head is up your arse, you're sure not to get colon cancer.

You might try calling one of the blood donation centers listed on the site to verify that they are collecting blood in Ryan Holt's name. You could also try phoning the Oncology ward at INOVA Fairfax Hospital (Falls Church, VA) for verification (although I don't know if they give any info out; I haven't tried this myself since I know the family). I suppose you could also show up at their house Sunday to meet Ryan's parents and assist with building out Ryan's new living space.

I see what point you're making, but chances are, when you donate directly to a family, that money will go to gifts, vacations, etc. When you donate to an organization, that money goes to efforts to eliminate the disease or prolong the lives of those living. Maybe it's a matter of personal taste.

2003-11-13 10:36:51 AM
Why are they renovating the house? Shouldn't this money but kept as "just in case" money? My niece died on her first birthday from congenital heart diease. We had all kinds of machines and things we just knocked down a wall put a hospital curtain up and left it as is. We had donations but my mom said she would keep the donations just in case. Because dealing with illness you never know what will happen. What if someone loses a job or something? I really don't mean any disrespect, im just asking. My prayers go out to them

Posting this on FARK is like dropping a one legged chicken into a pack of ravenous wolves.

I'm afraid to read the comments so far. Hope all goes well for the kid.

Please don't tell me you're going to be using donations to remodel their house. I really, really, hope I am misreading the site.

Hmm:
Link to Another Ryan Holt Story

This one says he's in MN and it's from 2002. He's listed as having Acute Myeloid Leukemia, but he's still listed as being 3 years old. I imagine there could be two Ryan Holt cancer victims, but it is enough to make me want to have independent verification of the child's situation.

Whether or not this kid actually exists, I strongly agree with the call to support research centers instead of individual patients. (The Lymphoma Research Foundation is indeed a good one.) Simply put, the kid is being taken care of, the parents will figure out a way to afford the lifestyle changes (being at the hospital, eating away from home, etc) and the money would be better spent on research for a cure than a single patient.

2003-11-13 10:42:44 AM
Good luck to the little guy and his family.

I do not donate on individual cases. I choose to support the United Way through a payroll deduction from each check.

Regardless of how you choose to do it, I encourage everyone to do something for someone else as often as possible. If you don't have extra $$, you can volunteer some time.

Now, back to being a cynical basshole...

Doh, duplicate post. Mods!

As an addendum, donations of blood are most excellent no matter what the reason. If you are allowed to donate, please do so with alarming regularity.

Well, not to knock you or him, but how does being around here longer than most lend itself to credibility?

That's pretty lame, Ditto. What's wrong with being skeptical? I'm sure this is a legitimate case, but what's so wrong with checking it out? The fact that he's been around here for a while makes absolutely no difference. I fail to understand the point you're making there.

Furthermore, the use of the donated funds seems suspect. Why would we donate to remodel a house? I don't get it.

That is a truly freaky coincidence. I can't vouch for the veracity of THAT Ryan, only this one, who plays with my 4-year-old. I put some info in a post above that might assist in verifying.

Does anyone else think this religious flamewar bullshiat is kind of inappropriate? I mean come on guys there's a time an a place for everything. My son's about the same age as Ryan, and if I was reading this self-important tripe while he was fighting for his life, there'd be a lot of serious ass-kicking going on. Get a farking grip on yourselves, and if you can't contribute anything even remotely positive, STFU and wait for the next AskMen link in silence.

Ryan and family: Hang in there, I wish you all the best. Hang in there little guy!
