What he said was "the states don't have rights" not "I feel this issue falls under the purview of [x amendment] rather than states rights".

Assuming you're referring to DOMA making marriage a federally recognized right under the 9th amendment and the 14th then bans the states from farking with it, I'd have to agree that that's at least a legitimate interpretation (and probably how this is going to play out eventually), but that doesn't make what the guy I was responding to was saying any less retarded.

You have to decide if the setback this will create in the United States is worth it if a major country like France moves forward with gay rights. By the way the homophobes will blame the forthcoming screw job France will get from Socialists on gay rights. Yes, they have impressive socialization of their oil wealth among their 95% white population. Let's get that out of the way.

They also have strict immigration policies that would be considered xenophobic and racist in the U.S. They are having severe cultural and social problems adjusting to the concept of allowing non-whites to immigrate. They also are not as progressive as the U.S. on women's rights. In a lot of Scandinavian nations, women are still expected to stay home, cook and tend babies. They are perhaps half a century behind the U.S. in this respect. There are other issues, but this isn't a phd thesis.

Look at it this way...If the U.S was 95% white, one of the top 5 the wealthiest nations in the world due to oil (rather than productivity or science), and admittedly did a good job of sharing that wealth among it's white citizens, BUT had xenophobic immigration rules, and had severe problems integrating non-whites, and serious problems with women's rights - would you consider the U.S. a socially liberal place? Answer honestly.

I think some people have to get out of the educational rut that there are one or two nations superior to all others in all ways. Some feel this way about the U.S. Some feel this way about Scandinavia, some feel this way about Europe. In ALL cases, such people are ignorant rednecks.
