FTFA: "Excessive adornment at the cemetery was causing it to be unsightly, so the cemetery board came up with a solution that they thought would work for all," Gustin told ABCNews.com.

I see the Hairsprayed Housewives Committee has decided to assert itself again.

FTFA: As for the July 4th holiday, flags will be allowed in the cemetery, Gustin said.

Hm, yes, ban the flags, it has. Quality misleading headline there, subby. And actually, fail headline in full effect on the website, too.

The proposed ordinance would only ban flags (or any grave decorations) when it wasn't a week before or after a patriotic holiday. And while I understand not wanting your military cemetery to look cluttered with rotting teddy bears or weathered decorations, I can't fathom any reason why flags would be unacceptable any day of the year.

Dead for Tax Reasons: Flags on flag day? What is this communist russia?

Why does the flag get its own holiday anyway? The eagle doesn't get its own day. The seal doesn't get its own day. Flags are gettin uppity.

Something tells me that the motivation for this law wasn't because their cemeteries were neatly adorned, as you pictured. Rotting teddy bears and misc. crap probably inspired it. "...because the number of items placed at gravesites, which included teddy bears, statues, bird baths and squirrel feeders, were becoming a few too many."

Whenever a flag is involved, people are quick to lash out before thinking. This isn't any different than some communities banning large yard decorations, which residents support until they find out it includes flags - at which point it's an assault on Freedom or some sh*t.

Besides, the flags are being allowed for the holiday. Outrage headline is outrageous.

Come on, guys...it was a simple oversight by the committee. They're being reasonable, allowing the flags until further notice, and agreeing to meet and rethink their stance.

That's democracy.

The flag is an immensely important part of our American culture. Unlike flags of other countries, it changes over time to reflect our contemporary makeup. It's a beautiful reminder that we may be 50-odd states with different attitudes and customs, but united we stand as one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for ALL. Not SOME. Not MOST. ALL.

And if Texas wants to say that they think this symbol of Freedom and Liberty is something that can be legislated away with idiotic rules about "unsightliness", then they had better be ready to hear the rising, tumultuous, angry voice with which we AMERICANS who love OUR FLAG will beat down on these FREEDOM HATERS from sea to shining sea!

We are Americans. Let's support our troops. Fly the Stars and Stripes with HONOR and RESPECT, and let's spit on those who would tell us we can't.

"The ordinance was adopted by the Woodland Park Cemetery Board, said Peggy Gustin, the administrative clerk for Mineral Wells, because the number of items placed at gravesites, which included teddy bears, statues, bird baths and squirrel feeders, were becoming a few too many."

Have been to the D-Day American cemetaries in France. They take better care of our dead than we do of our living.

People there really have no stand to take up a hissy about this. They are the ones that elected the council. I'd bet a quarter the council is full of members that have been re-elected many times. And that the voting public knows full well that favors are repaid at will by the council members.
In other words, they got what they asked for.

However, clutter is a problem in cemetaries. But to not make exceptions for flags is a dick move.

2012-07-04 05:53:52 AM
FTA: The ordinance, approved by the City Council of Mineral Wells, states that flags would be allowed on graves at the town's Woodland Park Cemetery only one week before and after Memorial Day and Veterans' Day. July 4 and Labor Day, other popular flag holidays, were not part of the approved time frame.

While this has nothing at all to do with the article, I am getting getting a little pissed about the subjugation of Labor Day as a yay America, thank our vets holiday. People really don't get why that one exists anymore.

Precisely. The only way this could have been more democratic would be if any of the outraged hissy fit throwing folks would have attended one of the 2 public meetings held to discuss this before the council voted on it. FTFA, no one attended.

However, that might be typically American. Don't bother getting involved in anything political until it bites you on the ass; then be outraged.

As a general guideline, the less defensible the actions are of a country's armed forced abroad, the more passionately enthusiasm for them will be whipped up at home. We have precisely the same thing in the UK - as our brave boys join your brave boys in slaughtering muslims because, erm, because, erm ... FREEDOM, that's it, so we are encouraged as a nation to fellate collectively anyone in military uniform.

It needs to be extended. All the way around the Republic of Texas.

Sure, just leave a flag at the gravesite. It will remain there forever, unblemished, as a tribute to your loved one, because the magic of Jesus will protect it.
