I don't get all the furry hate. There are weirdos everywhere with fetishes that make furries look tame by comparison.

/not a furry

Shocktopus: I prefer the chewy elegance of "imbroglio".

*raises his eyebrows thoughtfully as if to consider that*

Meethos: Summercat: Snarcoleptic_Hoosier:

I'll ask this because I don't know: Does the fur community hold that belief (and if so, to what degree) or was it just me meeting a couple of screwballs?

There is no single furry community. None. Zero. Zilch. There's a zillion of them, and they're non-exclusive memberships. Some groups hold that belief, yes. Some don't. Some furries ARE the "We are really animals", but that's not everyone. By far.

When you think of the Furry Fandom, think of it more like 'The Scifi Fandom' or 'The Fantasy fandom'. We are a very non-doctrinal bunch, after all.

Don't try to insert or compare your freaky shiat sex fetish into/with legit fandoms.

I... I honestly feel sorry for you. I just don't know how I could live, myself, with that sort of hate.

Do... do you want a hug? A totally platonic one?

Summercat: Yes, this happened. No, we have no clue who the hell these assholes are.

Further info on the BBQ event, it was also a fundraiser for the squad that was hosting it, several members of which are furries. This even had been going on for years, and was a fairly major regional thing.

All dead and gone now because two farktards thought it'd be funny to hump each other in suit in public. I ever find out for certain who these guys are, I'll be doing all I can do make certain that they'll not find a happy welcome within the fandom elsewhere.

.

can you get a copy of the police report with the farktards names, and hopefully pictures of the suits they were in?

Subby just outed himself. Only furries use the word "mundane" to describe non-furries...and this is the first time in forever that I seen it used that way, so he must be a hardcore furry.

Sci-fi fans have been callling non-fans mundanes since at least the early 60s, long before the furry thing came around. SCAdians also use the term.

Gamers, too. And cosplayers. It's pretty much used by any geeky subculture that holds conventions/events, especially if funny clothing is worn.

Let's see. These people were:

1. Outside

2. Barbecuing

3. At a popular party (the article says it became over crowded)

4. Having sex

Fursuit wearing furries or not, I still think that puts them well ahead of most people on Fark biatching about them.

For those who aren't familiar with furry behavior, this is probably one of the more tamer instances of "unseemly behavior."

2012-07-04 02:33:30 PM
So if these folks had just been having it off on the hood of a car not in any kind of "weird" consume, would the repercussions against the rescue squad have been so severe? To cut ambulance funding and threaten peole's jobs because a couple of yo-yos were being unseemly seems rather harsh. To permanently close down a fund raiser also seems a bit over the top.
Perhaps those threatened could mention that sexual orientation is a protected status, and if the severity of the reprimand has anything to do with the costumes being worn by the umseemly there could be a major lawsuit in the offing.

BronyMedic: I'm going to go out on a limb here and say when you spend ten thousand dollars + on a life-like fursuit of a cartoon character with realistic genitalia, then you have a problem. A major problem.

That's much the sentiment among furries, too.

It's not such a huge jump from Cosplay to Fursuits, y'know.

Wouldn't mind jumping that cosplayer's bones.

NullReferenceException: Honest question about furries: I've only heard about them through online mockery and an episode of CSI. Do they actually use terms like yiffing etc.?

Yes.

Was the portrayal on CSI what their get-togethers are actually like, aside from the the murder (probably)?

The CSI portrayal was substantially weirder. Ever been to a sci-fi con or a large LAN party? Like that, but the cosplayers spend a bit more money.

Phoenix87ta: He insisted that his suit be called by his furry name at all times, rather than things like "your fursuit" or "the fursuit." Even when it was hanging in the closet.

That's weird. Exception is if he had multiple fursuits of different characters, and by context, an improper noun wouldn't be clear.

Candygram4Mongo: I_Can't_Believe_it's_not_Boutros: I hope the "inappropriate behavior" wasn't shooting up. Nothing's worse than a furry with the syringe on top.

As one of the aging geezers who get the joke, I salute you...

Good god, how did I miss that? They only quote that play on everything, even my driver's license...

Ringshadow: Beastcub is another such artist, but Beastcub is known for her quadsuits.

Decent suits, but hot glue isn't the way to go. I can't imagine the durability is there.

2012-07-04 08:14:44 PM

Tainted1: Ooooh god, briefly tried to imagine trying to wear a fursuit in the middle of a 100+ heatwave. How do people pull that off without meeting darwin en mass?

Having done some mascot work outside of the furry fandom, I'm aware of several methods. I'd go into detail but I'm under an NDA about that (since in a hot climate, being able to stay out longer is a real advantage in the trade). Suffice to say, there's a lot in common in terms of cooling and hydration between fursuiting and desert combat.

2012-07-04 08:19:58 PM

Tainted1: Imagine the smell!

Also, this is why you thoroughly wash and dry a fursuit after every use, and dry and disinfect stuff that can't be readily washed, like heads and muscle suits. Cut rate mascoteers and costume rental shops don't seem to get this, then wonder why their mascots reek like a gym sock pulled from a septic tank on a hot Alabama summer.

If you're inclined to do this sort of thing, I strongly advise against buying used unless you know how it was taken care of. And if you're doing it for a job, make sure your employer understands this, or you're in for one unsanitary and disgusting day on the job. It's one thing when you're swimming in your own perspiration by the end of the day, it's another when it's commingling with everyone else to ever have worn it.

Keizer_Ghidorah: Furries, for the most part, feel that they're part animal in some way, like they're an animal soul trapped in a human body, or are under the guidance of some spirit animal, something like that.

I think you're confusing a small subset of furries for the majority. Or perhaps furries with shinto or some indian theology.

2012-07-04 08:31:32 PM

TV's Vinnie: So furries... you've done it again (at least 2 of you). Only this time you took our charity and instead of being the heroes and donating $600 so they could buy new equipment ...we've cost them almost $280,000 (2 ambulances + 55,000). You may have possibly cost up to 5 people their jobs, you've smeared the reputation of furry further into the mud, and pretty much pissed off AT MINIMUM 263 people who rightfully enjoy the FurBQ every year....just so you can blow a load on a car hood. Absolutely disgraceful....and I really hope the town prosecutes the shiat out of you for whatever they can.

I hope the squad sues 'em for that quarter mil, as well. That bullshiat deserves a life of indentured servitude to pay it off.

It's also an unsubstantiated myth, and one that's plagued pretty much everyone who was on constaff or worked at that hotel at the time it supposedly happened. The myth's morphed a few times now and has been attributed to several different conventions. Old and busted usenet bogosity is old and busted.

No. It's been confirmed by several eyewitnesses. Furries seem to try to spin it away like "it was mayo", as if there was some logical explanation as to why furries would squirt mayo on an elevator wall (not to mention the fact that mayo and semen do no look anything like each other).

Ever been to a gathering of dentists? I know that they also have inappropriate encounters in elevators and stairwells and lobbies. But folks get all upset because these events happened when the people involved were wearing costumes. Just pretend that it was a Halloween party.

Well, if that were the case, the story would be corroborated by the hotel staff or the convention organizers. Which it's not.

If not, it should be. Pretty much anybody who's been on constaff anywhere (including outdoor conventions at state parks where there's obviously no elevators) rolls their eyes when it comes up now.

I can already tell you're a furry apologist who desperately is trying to defuse that "elevator semen" fiasco. Can't blame you, but sorry. This one is on the record. Next you'll be saying that there was no couple at the FurBQ acting inappropriately and everything was fine.
