Something about Tom Cruise and Jack Reacher in a sentence together makes me crave an interstate rest stop.

The movie where a pretty 5'7" guy with blazing white teeth plays a rough and tumble 6'5" badass who never uses toothpaste? Yeah, who woulda known.....

The only possible, tentative connection I can make between Reacher and Tom: Reacher hugged a man to death and Tom (possibly) hugs men.

The character is a grizzled middle aged retired marine MP who though a US citizen, rarely spent time in the US because he was a Military brat. He's a Mary Sue taciturn, trained detective who literally has no possessions besides a toothbrush, and while he can use his wits to solve crimes, he is often called upon to use his significant brawn. Often he knows that he can win a fight because he sees that his opponent has smaller bone structure or underestimates the speed that someone built like a linebacker and trained by the USMC would have.

This guy is being played by Tom Cruise.

Maybe they will use forced perspective, like they did to make Ian McKellan seem twice the size of hobbits.

Studios are far more interested in making a money-maker film than getting the casting technically right. Cruise, for some reason is still a big draw (Rock of Ages notwithstanding.)

They'd cast that guy as Tom Robinson if they thought people would come see To Kill a Mockingbird because of him.

This is Jack Reacher's physical description. As a fan of the book, I'm really pissed that Tom Cruise was case in the role.

Physical appearance

Reacher is a giant, standing at 6' 5" tall (1.96m) with a 50-inch chest, and weighing between 210 and 250 pounds (100-115 kg). He has ice-blue eyes and dirty blond hair. He has very little body fat, and his muscular physique is completely natural (he reveals in Persuader, he has never been an exercise enthusiast.) He is exceptionally strong but is not a good runner.. Reacher is strong enough to break a man's neck with one hand (Bad Luck and Trouble) and kill a villain with a single punch to the head (Running Blind and 61 Hours) or chest (Worth Dying For). In a fight against a 7 foot, 400 lb steroid-using thug (Persuader), Reacher was able to lift his opponent into the air and drop him on his head.

Reacher has various scars, most notably a scar on his abdomen caused by a bombing in Lebanon. He also has a 3-4 inch thin white scar that intersects his shrapnel scar that he received during a knife fight with Al-Qaeda operative Lila Hoth. Reacher mentions how the rough stitch work from his existing scar helped decrease the severity of his most recent attack. However, the cut did produce a deep, serious gash that led to Reacher passing out from blood loss. He also has a scar on his chest from a .38 bullet,[6] a tear drop burn scar from close range gunshot that crossed his chest at point blank range, and one on his arm where his brother struck him with a chisel in his youth.

Like I said, the studio wants to make money. I read a lot, but I've never read any of the Reacher stuff.

I imagine the public, with the predilection toward Twilight and 50 Shades, would not go see this movie were it cast correctly, say with Kevin Durand (not Kevin Durant.)

They'll go see it with Cruise, as farked up as that is though.

I kept thinking and hoping it was a joke. I mean...yeesh, I know books aren't always adapted the greatest, but this was a huge casting mistake.

Absolutely no argument there. Reacher's physical appearance is mentioned frequently throughout the books so there's no reason to cast Tom Cruise in the role, except to cash in at the box office.

My hopes are that the sincere Reacher fans will boycott the movie. Probably won't happen, but one can dream.

I can only hope that this is the George Lazenby of the (hopefully) future Reacher novels and they find any one of hundreds of better suited actors for this role. This is like casting Kevin Smith to play Andre the Giant in a biopic.

Exactly.

Would Tom Cruise's Jack Reacher be able to lift a 7 foot, 400 lb steroid-using thug into the air and drop him on his head?

I think all Jack Reacher fans know the answer to that question.

FTFY. His father was a Marine, but Jack Reacher was Army. And, Lee Child often makes the point that his strength and fierceness comes from MPs having to train to be tougher than the baddest-asses of the Special Forces and such, in order to be able to subdue them if the need arises.

Not picking on the USMC at all. Just correcting the facts of Jack Reacher's story. :)

But, yes, this is a terrible casting choice, and I will not be seeing this movie.

I don't think so, actually. Joe Manganiello with a high and tight haircut is almost exactly the right size and age.

It was for the previous movie, but apparently there were complaints that it looked TOO much like Chicago (and not like "Gotham"), so they used Chicago, Pittsburgh and NYC (I believe) this time around. Parts of Pittsburgh look enough like "non-descript East Coast/Midwest city", that it can pretty easily act as an inexpensive substitute.

The preview by itself looks fine. A bit average, but nothing really amiss.

Knowing what I know about the Jack Reacher character though...yeah, that preview is just silly.

I've read all the novels and like them. I still don't understand why they picked "One Shot" for the first one. I thought it was one of the weaker entries. "61 Hours" is my favorite, but there was nothing wrong with the first one "Killing Floor". I think it would have introduced the character better.

The trailer looks horrible.
