Just for the record, I always thought it would be cool to have one glass eye w/ a bunch of sea monkeys in it. Never quite got around to it, though.

One day a Pirate and a bartender were talking to each other in a bar. The Bartender asked the pirate "Where did ya get that peg leg from?"

The Pirate responded " We were sailing the seas when a big ol' shark came up to me while I was swimmin' and bit off me leg."

Later the Bartender asked "Where did you get that hook then?"

The pirate responded "Well, me crew and I were in a battle and it got cut through the bone."

The bartender then asked " Then where did ya get the eye patch from?"

The pirate said " In a harbor I looked at a gull flying over head and it took a dump right in me eye."

The bartender was puzzled and asked the pirate, "How would that make you get an eye patch?"

The pirate responded, "First day with the hook."

It is amazing what people will do for friends in a time of need. When I needed neurosurgery in college to maintain my ability to feel my legs and walk, and my insurance was trying to pull the ol' preexisting condition BS, I had people without a pot to piss in falling over themselves to sell their belongings (their bong, I guess?) to help me out. Wouldn't have been much, considering the 100K price tag, but it really is the thought that counts sometimes. Getting all choked up just writing about it. Insurance ended up paying. CSB.

My mom lost vision in her left eye due to diabetic retinopathy and has isses with cataracts in the other.

If you ever need tips on low vision products, computer settings, around-the-house stuff, I would be happy to provide. It has become such a way of life in our household that I sometimes take it for granted.

That said, it IS possible to go about your business after all this! =)

I am so incredibly proud of everyone who helped out. All the "it isn't very much but here is a few bucks" people...just look at what we were able to do. It gets pretty snarky around here and sometimes it gets downright mean.

But we made a positive difference and I just can't say thank you enough.

As a Type II diabetic myself, I have had retinopathy since June 2009. I started seeing my Opthamologist in Dec 2009 and he has been lasering my eyes since then, roughly once a month. However in Feb 2010, my left eye got very bad and I had to have the vitrechtomy surgery (outpatient) and it went very well. My recovery experience with it was the eye patch for one day, followed by the eye drops at home. In the beginning, I saw a deep blue bubble in nearly 100% of my vision of that eye, floating around like a bubble on a carpetner's level. That blue bubble really bothered me, but it dissolved over the next two days and was gone within three. I have also had many(and I mean lose to 50 ) injections for a vastatin anti swelling drug in each eye, roughly once a month.
My vision was beyond 20/100 in both eyes before treatment and has been corrected to 20/40 with their help.
I hope that put of all the posts here, you read mne and take it to heart. They CAN correct your issues and do wonders every day. Be patient. Be strong. It will only get better. Good luck!

Curious what injections did you get?

I've gotten Avastin and it's the most amazing drug I've ever taken. The results are simply amazing in one day.

a large part of getting away with being the occasional snarky asshole - and putting up with same - is knowing deep down that there is decency, humanity & all-around good inside most folks ...

... most - not that one f*cker of course, but most

I see what you did there. :P

My vision was closer to 20/2100 when this all started, so the fact I'm reading all this and typing on here -- mistakes or not -- is one of those amazing things that I never thought I'd find so amazing.

I'm actually not sure what the drug is called, only that it's put out by a company called Genentech.. The whole experience happened so fast, and by the time I was injected in April, I was using a magnifying glass to read the computer screen with my right eye. All I know about the drug is it's designed to be injected directly into the blood vessel that shouldn't be in the eye in an effort to stop the leak. The doctor said it's something he typically gives patients before surgery.
