Damn, he is like the Allen Greenspan of tortoises. Chairman of the Bed (of sand and palm fronds)

2012-07-03 04:37:16 PM
Figures they would give him an Italian name. I guess he's Catholic too, then?

Fathers day for him must be fun. But really how may ties do you need?

Well, I guess it does make me wonder what turtles sound like when they screw.

Ever try smoked turtle dick?

2012-07-03 04:40:15 PM
Is it really that healthy for the population to have one member contributing that much? Couldn't this lead to inbreeding in subsequent generations?

FTA: "We can now say that the reproduction of this species is guaranteed," said Tapia.

Cayot was asked whether having so many children of the same few parents interbreeding on Espanola could hurt the breed's long-term prospects.

"It could be a problem," she said. "But it is more important to save the species."

I was expecting Lonesome George the White.

How fortuitous. I just happened to have a nameless tortoise name my household a few days ago. If anyone wants to suggest a name, I'd be very grateful! He is a Russian Tortoise, landed at my house the same way the frogs, chicken, etc did...bought for a kid who had no interest in the animal presented by parents who have found out I will not say no.

If it was left unchecked it would but conservation programs usually use computer databases and whatnot to maximize genetic diversity in their breeding programs.

Antonio... you are the father...

again.

I particularly like that "Galapagos" was correctly spelled in the article, the headline and the URL, and subby still managed to get it wrong twice.

Antonio will be like the Genghis Khan of the tortoise world. Link

For us older folk, a similar headline would substitute Antonio Cromartie with Shawn Kemp.

Sounds like his name should have been Marshawn Lynch.

Dow Jones and the Temple of Doom: Fitting that its a Hispanic name.

I was at the San Diego zoo once and witnessed it. I am still mentally scarred. It can not be unseen.

Unlike Lonesome George, who died June 24, Diego symbolizes not a dying breed but one resurrected.

Didn't know he recently died. :(

Jim from Saint Paul: Sounds like his name should have been Marshawn Lynch.

Come on now, Marshawn might not have the best 40 time but he's not that slow.

But seriously, I don't get it... it's possible that there are things I don't know, but a little googling doesn't give me the impression that Marshawn is in the Cromartie category.

I think he meant Travis Henry who, as of 2009, had fathered 11 children by 10 different women.

On the other hand, after posting that I bothered to RTFA and see that it was named Diego, so maybe I'm the one who didn't get it.

The concern is that if they are genetically similar then a single disease could wipe all of them out.
But, one problem at a time....

I doubt they're having him breed with his children, unless he's the last male of the species.
