To be fair, they don't have an ACLU to do it for them thru the court system. Give them some time to attain first-world status and they'll be equipped to foment religious bigotry in a civilized manner.

The ACLU is just a neutered version of the Taliban for all things not Muslim. Actually, the ACLU probably never goes against Islamic groups either.

The colors look overly enhanced in all the photos. It's like the really bad colorization that Turner did a couple of decades ago. Maybe this is really old footage and is the Taliban's version of a Iranian missile firing.

And why was it supposed to be opened only on the last day? Is something in there that's supposed to stop the last day from happening? Or is it something that's supposed to help bring about the last day? So if we never open that gate, there will never be a last day? Or if we open the gate on the last day, and it stops the world from ending, then it won't be the last day? And just who in the hell is the decider of what "the last day" is? Half of the planet is covered in darkness at any given time, so for half of the planet, the "last day" is the "last night" and sometimes, parts of the planet are experiencing the following day, so is "the last day" more of a 2-day festival?

That was a stupid gate and I'm glad they blew it up.

Your are correct. There is no way an atheist can be bothered by some mud and plaster. What bothers me as an atheist though, in addition to trolly pickle-kissers like you, is one group forcing it's religion and beliefs on another at any expense. So that bothers me.

Harry Freakstorm: After they knocked down the door, they cautiously peeked inside. Suddenly a Geraldo Rivera appeared in the doorway grinning. He said nothing and just climbed out of the vault. Then another appeared in the doorway and another and another.

One hundred Geraldos emerged from the temple. This scared one of the Taliban and he grabbed a saber and slashed at Geraldo number one hundred, cutting him neatly in two. From the two halves formed two new Geraldos!

The Taliban were scared. Another fighter took and RPG and shot it at another Geraldo. He was blown to smithereens. And every bit of the Geraldo formed a separate, brand new Geraldo.

They shot at the Geraldos with their AK 47s, they threw grenades at them. Whenever a chunk of Geraldo fell off, up sprang a brand new Geraldo. The Geraldos just stood there, smiling as their numbers doubled and tripled.

The Taliban knew they were doomed and quickly turned their guns on each other. They all died painfully and slowly. The thousands of Geraldos saw that there was no story in this and turned and walked away.

The UNESCO team watched from a distance. They sent in a SWAT team of Archeologists who quickly reassembled the door and sealed the mosque. They then buried the mosque under a mountain of acetate.

The Head of UNESCO turned to his scientist, John McClain. "What about these Geraldos? Even if they don't replicate any more, there are still enough to destroy the world." McClain replied cooly: "Don't you worry, buddy. I got this covered." He then spoke one word in to his walkie talkie and told the Head of UNESCO to watch the Geraldos.

A CH-47 Chinook suddenly appeared over the horizon leaking transmission fluid and shedding parts both of which a healthy shiathook is known to do. Beneath on a sling was a large black box. The Head of UNESCO saw the writing on the box and became relieved. The world would be saved.

The shiathook flew over the Geraldos and the began getting excited and jabbering amongst them ...

Wait. I got it.

We take all the rubble from all the destroyed ancient things, and we use them to make on really big ancient-thing-rubble statue/building/whatever.

Then everyone that wants to destroy it will be too busy fighting each other over who gets to blow it up. When the last group is standing, we let them go at it, because let's face it, they really wanted it more.

Then we take the rubble from that ancient-thing pile, and repeat until we run out of terrorists/hate groups/rouge nations/pancake houses/radical religion nuts/etc.

When they're all gone, we use what little bits of these blown-up things to make a nice bed for a walking path, and put some nice trees along it for shade.

Inside was a 10" plate, about 1/2" thick, sort of a yin-yang / sinusoid symbol, half black, half white, made out of some kind of ceramic. We couldn't get any of our tools to even scrape the surface to get some for the spectrometer. Weird thing is that it was totally clean.

It's called history. Many folks on Fark have been told to read some (especially in religious threads) so it might be something important. As for knowledge lost, each researcher hopes to find something new, which - at this site in Timbuktu - is now made impossible, depending on the level of destruction. We'll never know what might be lost.

To quote some webpage:

In archaeology and library research you can make a claim based on the easy pickings that lie on the surface or you can break into a sweat as you dig deeper. But it is not enough to dig deep. You must sift every spadeful, and sift it fine. Truth is most often found in the tiniest of grains: it is easy to miss if you don't focus intently.

One day the hinges rusted shut. The caretaker couldn't be bothered to fix it since spare parts were pretty hard to come by in Timbuktu, so he concocted a story that if the door was ever opened it would be the end of the world. Problem solved.
