Yep...

People didn't domesticate cats... Cats domesticated people, with toxoplasmosis.

T. gondii usually runs its life cycle through mice and cats

But based on observation that there is approx a 3% p.a. predation rate of primates in areas where there are big cats, suggestion that humans have been a vector in prehistoric past. And so there shd be strains of T.gondii that have similar effects on human brain as rodent brains - ie screw up their thinking so take more risks. And if it does affect brain chemistry it's probably reasonable to see it as tipping the balance in potentially vulnerable people.

ktybear: Bugs have been controlling insects for ages, it's logical to think they do something to us that we don't know about.

That sounds like it would be a good plot for a movie. Neurotoxins created in nature (say in trees, for example) alter the behaviour of humans, making them commit mass suicide.

I'm sure Hollywood would find a suitable director to tackle that kind of source material and not make it totally suck. Oh yes, very sure.

See, movie-goers aren't smart enough to understand the moral of the story, so we have to beat them over the head with it three or four million times.

There was a Fark link a while ago about how they think T. gondii makes us either introverted or extroverted or something like that..it seemed scary.

Just for research. The kid has been coming home, curling up on top of the TV and purring contentedly. When I ask him where he was, he just shows me his claws and tries to bite my hand.

The answer is yes.

At least, it is to me.

I have no scientific data to back this up... but it seems to me that people who have a predisposition to psych issues tend to be cat people, and when they get enough cats (it may be 2, it might be 7...) they seem to hit some sort of critical mass, and become crazy cat people.

I've met many animal hoarders in my life... Only the cat hoarders seemed truly disturbed. The rest seemed like they just could not say no when they took in an animal, but if you could humanely get them out of the situation... they would be ok.

The cat people.. were just crazy. Even if you could find an amiable and humane way to get rid of their cats, they were still just absolutely nuts, and would be buried in cats (and cat crap) again within a year.

/This is all anecdotal, but there really seems to be a pattern.

Heard this on the news and thought, "toxoplasmosis?"

See the farkers on here guessed the same.

Haven't we known about this for a while? It basically inhibits/alters part of your decision making portions of your brain. It makes you less able to judge danger and/or makes you less afraid of danger.

Old news is old.

Ugh, too much pseudoscience is being written about Toxoplasma gondii.

It affects mice. Then one day some troll speculated that it would be an evolutionary advantage if it turned humans into crazy cat lovers, and the latest pseudoscience fad was off and running. Never mind that a significant percentage of people have it with no symptoms whatsoever (probably because it doesn't do anything to humans), not to mention brainwashing humans is a pretty darn specific adaptation in the span of time since humans and cats began mingling socially (which was driven by agriculture so it only goes so far back).

Not that with current evidence it's completely impossible that human brains are somewhat influenced, but a scientific study is nothing without a causal link. In the case of a microbe, the lifecycle needs to be revised on a level more specific than "it makes women crazy". Until then, this is just a bunch of hogwash.

If crazy cat ladies have Toxoplasma gondii antibodies, it's probably because they're heavily exposed to it. One can say the same damn thing about an allergy FFS. And crazy people are more likely to commit suicide.

/ Cat hoarders piss me off

You're missing the obvious point though! If there were more cats in households, there would be fewer non-cat owner suicides! Think of the possibilities! You could give everyone a cat. Completely eliminate non-cat owner suicides!
