The impression I get from this passage, after reading what came before, is that he was used. he had an able body, and he had an aristocrat's name, but in the end, he was used because he was young, he was eager, and war is greased by the bodies of the young and eager. I don't know how to explain it. it may have been for the Good Guys, but he's really no different from a suicide bomber. I don't get the feeling that there was any planning, on France's part. Just use what you got when you get it. If it works out, fine, if it doesn't, you tried. I read that book and thought he was far too simplistic and glossed over the real meat of the matters at hand. Interesting that on his webpage he says its 64.3% accurate.
