I've debated with friends on which sport will have a fairly well known male athlete come out. I'd think it'd be an individual sport first (tennis or golf), and then perhaps hockey.

Rupert Everett, though he's not a leading guy anymore. Also there are so many great directors that are gay that I don't think Hollywood would have an issue casting a gay actor if they could draw people to the theater. I think this is a good move that goes beyond just her. Other than that guy who wrote gay in the paint, or center (I don't remember the title or player because he wasn't important and its the NBA so I don't care) I don't know to many players out. Not like its needed for sports, but just making the general population more informed is always better. Yes there are idiots and homophobes out there and this is necessary.

It provides a famous precedent for for others who may be a bit more scared about it. It's less, I think, for Rapinoe and more for the girls who look up to her and are gay, but have been frightened to admit it to their parents. At least that's my take on it, I could be wrong.

Being forced to live a life you don't want to lead due to bullying and intimidation is an issue. If it means living a closeted life you don't want to lead, that's horrible. If it means living an outed life you don't want to lead, that's horrible, too.

Rapinoe laments the difficulty for closeted male athletes. She believes the first active players to come out in a high-profile men's team sport will usher change.

What if Mr Cruise doesn't want to come out? What if he chooses not to make a big deal out of his sexuality and his happy as things are?

Why does it matter to you if he's out or not (or gay or not)? Let the man do what he wants. Personally I enjoy most of his films and don't actually give a shiat about his personal life.
