Even Marvel Year In Review called it "Grey's Syndrome." When a character just can't stay dead.

Cyno01: I mean i guess thats sort of her thing, "rising from the ashes" as it were, but this is getting ridiculous.

Oh yeah, memo to Marvel: Stop with the BS and just keep Jean as the Phoenix, period. No more teases, no more surprises, Jean Grey as Phoenix. 'nuff said.

Yeah, I've liked AvX so far. I'm being entertained, that's all I want from my comic book.

Yeah...except the whole "the Phoenix will destroy everything" main plot point that's driving the Avengers when Rachel was Phoenix for years without the planet being destroyed. Captain Britain, one of her old teammates, is on the Avengers. Did he just forget? "Oh, yeah, sorry guys, turns out if you're not a psycho, you can control the Phoenix just fine...did I forget to mention that?"

It's really kind of stupid when someone who was the avatar of the Phoenix for a very, very long time is basically standing right there and you have people arguing whether a human can control it.

Unfortunately, their whole "we're going to kill a character once per quarter" mandate (yes, they really have that mandate) has made it so that comic book deaths elicit nothing more than a huge yawn these days.

No death has mattered since the death of Superman

That was when the comic companies told the Grim Reaper to go fark off.

Superman's birth parents
Any hero with the codename of Grasshopper
Gwen Stacy
Wasp
Uncle Ben
Bruce Wayne's parents
Ted 'Blue Beetle' Kord
Most of the original Hellions
Most of the students that attended Xavier's Academy before M-Day
The New Warriors team that was lead by Speedball before Civil War
Sentry

Sentry, by the way, died on the way back to his home planet, and will never EVER return. I have a sworn legal affadavit.

Man, died on just the 2nd mission...sux to be him.

BTW...Jean Grey needs to go back to being Phoenix....not Dark pheonix.

What kind of superhero uses their given name?? It's sacrilege

Yep, she died at the end of Secret Invasion. Skrull Hank Pym gave her a serum that would let her grow but it was really a last minute weapon to be used by the Skrulls if they were losing. Caused Janet to start glowing and was about to explode or something forcing Thor to use Mjolnir to disperse her..

She became the real Hank Pym's shrunken universe where he had his Infinite Avengers Mansion housed. Pretty much him and the Avengers Academy lived inside of Janet/The Wasp for a long time.

No, I don't, since what I described is exactly what's happened. There was a throwaway line in Wolvie and the X-Men a month or so back, and Rachel has said she'll help Hope if she's meant to be the next host, but pretty much Rachel has taken a complete back seat in a story she should have been front and center for. Even Newsarama in their weekly scorecard for AvX mentioned this and made her the "MVP" for one week because she's been basically benched in a game that she should be the star player in.

So, no, please tell me.

Well, they could force her into a situation where she has to break her moral compass, and instead of dealing with it with maturity and grace, have her fall into clinical depression, decide she's not worthy to be Phoenix, give her costume and title to Kitty Pryde, and then have some heroic god go crazy and kill off Kitty trying to stop it...

And then shove Jean into a minor roll in the "New X-Men" where she will primarily do low-level feats while remaining practically mute.

Not that Marvel would ever do that to a character or anything...

That's the nice thing about comics. If you give up, for the most part you can come back in, and maybe missed a story or two of note, but the characters are, for the most part, the same.

Except I don't remember Shatterstar being so arrogant...or omni-sexual.

I can't say I've read that one. Was that the one with Casey, or was that the one called "Strange"?

I got into the character about a year ago when Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 introduced him. In fact, he's the one who got me into comics.

That sounds like it would actually have been a pretty cool story, especially if they never brought back the "real" Superman, and just kept the new one. Too bad they didn't have the balls to follow through just because someone else did something similar, but suckier*.

*suckier based on what was in that link, since I've never actually read any of these comics.

I stopped reading X-Men just after the Age of Apocalypse crossover. At that point, there were just too many x-titles coming out every month. And you had to try to keep up to date on just about all of them, since they typically dipped into each others' storylines. And let's see, we had....X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, X-Men Unlimited, X-Factor, X-Force, Excalibur, Generation X, Wolverine, Cable, and plus just about every X-man was getting a mini-series back then (Gambit, Rogue, Archangel & Psyloche, Storm, Cyclops & Phoenix, Bishop). I was going broke just trying to keep up.

I held out through Inferno and read all the crossovers, then as the aftermath of it petered out in unstatisfying ways, I kept crossing comics off my last like last stragglers in the Pacific in WWII. After "Nanny" and a series of comics that featured only Jubilee and an Ororo that didn't remember herself, etc. The Siege Perilous broke me for it. I just checked wiki and that means I basically missed the entire 90s. I remember seeing Cable and Bishop on covers and friends telling me how cool they were, but somehow I never wanted any part of that. Maybe because it seemed everyone's superpower was "guns."

I think massive crossovers were slightly more rare in the 80s, I was a Marvel guy so mostly I remember stuff like Secret Wars. But jeez, it seemed like the 90s to present has been a never ending deluge of crossover stuff, where you can't just follow one comic because the character is always doing stuff that makes no sense for at least half the comic because it ties into whatever else is going on. At least back in the day there would be a throwaway comment with a * and a box that would say "this happened in x-force 23 - Smilin Stan Lee"

Anyway, that was a frothy rant and I feel bad you had to go through the Apocalypse thing. That's a lot of X-spinoffs to have to read.
