It just came in that she has officially quit now because "In my heart of hearts, I just feel like I earned the third spot," she said Sunday. "I almost feel like I was kind of robbed."

What's bad is they are wondering if she wouldn't just stall since she could pull a "there's no rule that says we had to do it now....I want to do it when my opponent isn't expecting it".

Yeah, it sucks that you thought you had made it when you didn't, but that doesn't mean that Games don't go into overtime when a buzzer beater is waived off after instant replay.

I'm pretty sure she'll be on the 4x100 relay. Realistically, Felix is likely to win a runoff (her best this year is 10.92 to Tarmoh's 11.07, which is a pretty big difference in a race that short) and the third place finisher at the US Olympic Trials is a long shot for an Olympic medal anyway.

i was sure that they both would say, "sure, let's race." but i can see how she might be upset as the scoreboard, the stadium, the metal ceremony, etc all had her as the third, and thus on the team. why was it up on the scoreboard? and seriously how did they have a metal ceremony without the official results? sure, the scoreboard is live, but one would think that results are finalized before handing out metals.

She's a quitter and a whiner. I understand it was a colossal fark up by the organization, and that how she found out it was a tie after the fact was garbage. But she's had several days to think it over and if she was afraid of getting smoked in the rematch, she could've went for the coin flip. Bowing out at this point on the day of the race is total BS.

Pretty much any USA runner in a race 400m or less has a legit shot at a medal. Last Olympics, all 3 100m women made the finals (Jamica did sweep the medals though), and USA went 2, 4, 5 in the 200m.

Came in to say exactly that. Also, training to qualify is pretty much the only thing that Olympic athletes do day in and day out for years...so why would she toss that away? The answer: The other girl had better times before, she was afraid of getting smoked in a runoff, and chose to be a biatch about it.

Leave her whiny ass home, even for the 4X100, get someone else. She has exemplified the very antithesis of the "Olympic spirit".

Actually, she is given a spot on the relay team. She'll go as a full member, and this tradition is pretty old and well established for the American track team. I think, she just weighed her options and took the undercover spot. Gutless, I would think yes.

Of course, many people refuse to believe someone can do what Torres has done at her age without the help of performance-enhancing drugs. Does Torres, now 43, feel obligated to address accusations and rumors as they come up, or would that tack merely serve to dignify them?

"I feel like you have to address them," Torres said. "Because of [accusations], I went to the head of [the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency] and said 'This is what's going on, and I want to prove that I'm clean. I'll do whatever it takes. I'll take every test you have to show that I'm doing this the right way.' That's what I've done, and there's really nothing else I can do."

Indeed, prior to coming back for the 2008 Olympics, Torres volunteered to undergo a broader array of drug testing through USADA than the typical screening required of Olympic athletes. The head of USADA, Travis Tygart, told The New York Times, "I think a dirty athlete would be crazy to volunteer for this program."

1- USADA isn't as strict as you might think. They're behind WADA, and nowhere near the level of VADA.

2- Torres has a TUE (theraputic use exemption) for inhalers for her "asthma". Essentially, she gets to legally dope... on top of whatever else she may be doing without a TUE. It's a condition she didn't have throughout most of her professional swimming career, but it magically manifested a bit before the last Olympics.

Oh no, having to earn the spot you feel you're entitled to? How terrible. If I was in charge of how they handle the lineups for the 4x100 relay at the Olympics, I'd just use the other five women who aren't quitters.

I was a swimmer for over 9 years. I know what the drug testing process is like for the top swimmers. Some of the swimmers on my teams had the same condition that Dara was diagnosed with. You should also know that even for people with a TUE for a drug, they still have a testing standard for those drugs that they're not allowed to exceed. Are all of those people cheaters as well even if they don't violate that level?

FINA uses WADA standards with their testing. A lot of this got aired four years ago when Jessica Hardy tested positive because of a tainted AdvoCare supplement that she took to help her recovery time. Her lawyers dug through the process with a fine tooth comb. If they nabbed her, how come they didn't nab Dara?

I have no trouble at all believing that she is clean. Swimming is a pretty clean sport in my experience. We are serious about our craft and take pride in doing the impossible. Dara is very meticulous with her workouts and has private massage therapists and nutritionists that work with her every day. She focuses almost entirely on her underwater technique and core strength rather than aerobic capacity because that is what is most important for the one race she's swimming.

WTF is this shiat?

First, Jemele Hill is an ignorant, racist biatch. (Race had nothing to do with *this* story, but it does with every other goddamn story she does).

Second, as a former elite runner myself, her knee jerk reaction that USATF screwed this up pisses me off. They had no procedure? The runners were offered three options: Run off, flip a coin, or one could concede to the other. What the fark else would they have liked? Run the time down to another placeholder? They don't do that. Flip a coin? Admittedly silly. The two options that made the most sense were one could concede, or a run off.

Doesn't a run off make sense? All other professional sports have an overtime. They aren't going to run an additional 10 meters, so re-running the race makes the most sense. For Hill, Layden at SI, and Tarmoh to react as if this was the worst possible scenario is ignorant at best. This is infuriating, the joke isn't how USATF handled this, the joke is how everyone else is reacting.
