Good for him.

I am not sure why people feel the need to share their sexual preference. To me, it should only be discussed if we are talking about dating or getting to know each other.

You can always judge the severity of a natural disaster/political uprising by the tightness of the black t-shirt Anderson Cooper is wearing. That alone should have been a hint to people.

Personally, I don't care. He is extremely talented, a great reporter and I grew up watching him (from his Channel One days). Why are people so interested in his sexual orientation? When I watch him, I don't sit there wondering "Is he gay?". He is (from what I can tell) a good person who works hard and has earned every bit of his reputation. If he's found happiness in his personal life, I am happy for him. Some people will never find peace and happiness.
/And he's a Vanderbilt, which is just badass in my book.

Keep in mind what the article discussed. Anti-gay legislation, bullying, condemnation. It helps to have gay people who are high profile and can spread some understanding to straights and some hope to other gays.

It makes me kinda happy that nowadays a celebrity (or whomever) can come out, and most people are like, "Ok. It's no big deal." People should be able to be who they are. If you're an adult person, then you should be able to enjoy an adult relationship with any other adult person.

Not quite...

There's still the "lost generation"... guys like Tom Cruise and John Travolta who are suspected of being gay, but have been on the DL so long because when they rose to fame being gay was a no no, and at this point they probably think it would be a disaster for them to come out.

thenewmissus: Good for him.

Because being gay is still intensely socially problematic in the US and coming out is still potentially one of the most terrifying things in a young person's life. Because there are so many consequences to being gay that by being vocal and being public, they are fighting to create *more* safety for people like them so that, someday, their orientation really isn't an issue. Right now it's usually 'ew, I don't care, it doesn't affect me, don't talk about it.' It's not an issue for you.

It sure as shiat is an issue for gay people. Announcements like this can ruin or force changes in careers and Anderson is extremely fortunate to be entrenched. By coming out officially now, his career is safe and he can now speak for those who can't.

If Cruise and Travolta have publicists who are worth their salt, they could spin it so that they got loads of sympathy if they really wanted to come out. At this point I think that even for them, the whole sham thing is probably hurting rather than helping their careers.

Pretty much this. Even as the glass closet is becoming a liability for public figures, there are still a lot of places in this country where it's difficult for people to be out. Kids are still being rejected by their families, people can still get fired or face housing discrimination in much of the country, and even if you don't have any of that to worry about it's still frikkin scary to come out. Because people feel like they know celebrities, a celebrity coming out has almost the same effect in changing people's minds as someone they actually know coming out does.

Anderson Cooper being out makes it easier for the kid in small town America to come out.

Doubt it; at most he plays both sides of the field. I've watched him chase pretty hard after a female friend. Like to the point where she had to go "Stop calling me."

I hung out with Anderson in New Orleans after Katrina when he was down there. I ran a "food kitchen" where we cooked for the S&R groups plus anyone left in downtown New Orleans. I knew Anderson was gay back then.. I know this because as we sat down to eat and chat he noticed my tattoos and asked me to take my shirt off so he could see the rest. If I were gay I probably would bone Anderson.. Like him, I also have prematurely graying hair. Alas.. I'm straight.

Also - if you have a disease that makes you prone to shiat your pants, then you take care of that and wear a Depends if you are going to be out in public. I'm not saying it is right to laugh at people, but if you have poopy problems then taking precautions is simply basic hygiene.

My wife didn't know he was gay. On Saturday we were talking about people getting their hair dyed white and gray (she is naturally gray - part indian, and she mentioned she thought this CNN reporter was hot. I asked if she meant Anderson Cooper. She said yes. I had to inform her that he was gay. She didn't believe me.

Usually her gaydar is spot on but this is one time she missed it. I think her love for him blinded her.

It matters because there is a massive amount of legislation going on about this right now. In the civil rights era of the 1960s, one could tell the affected population by skin color. People could openly see discrimination and the affected population. It's much harder to do that here. People have to announce it in some way - action, affiliation, public display, whatever. You can't be silent and unseen when the you need to get 50.1% of the population on your side for a vote.

So kids killing themselves is of no concern to you?

1982: I wish those f*****s would keep it to themselves.
2012: Who cares about sexual preferences? It's none of our business!

Just once, I would love for someone, anywhere on the internet, say "who cares? It's none of our business!" in response to a heterosexual celebrity making a comment confirming their heterosexuality. (aka, "my wife loved my latest movie", or "I enjoyed filming that scene with my co-star because she's so hot", etc). But that never happens, because people understand that we're social beings by nature, and we enjoy talking about our lives with others. It's only when someone mentions the dreaded gay that people suddenly get very concerned with what is and is not "our business".

Yeah and those of us with a functioning brain don't care what those morons think either. Actually it is rapidly becoming way uncool to be a homophobe. It's one of the fastest ways to social isolation. There may be a lot of gay-haters left, but they are rapidly becoming like the black-haters of old: they are being quiet about their bigotry.

I wonder if this will give Travolta or Cruise the balls to confirm the obvious for everybody next. But then, they have the ridiculous sham marriages. I'll give Cooper credit for not constructing a fake life to mask his private life. He just refused to comment on his private life for a long time. Khellendros: JackieRabbit: Does anyone really care anymore?

It matters because there is a massive amount of legislation going on about this right now. In the civil rights era of the 1960s, one could tell the affected population by skin color. People could openly see discrimination and the affected population. It's much harder to do that here. People have to announce it in some way - action, affiliation, public display, whatever. You can't be silent and unseen when the you need to get 50.1% of the population on your side for a vote.

All true... that being said, I look forward to an Onion paordy article titled "The Fact Is, I'm Black."

2012-07-02 02:37:28 PM

JackieRabbit: eddiesocket: JackieRabbit: Does anyone really care anymore?

Yes. Many, many people still oppose gay rights. They have large followings and radio shows and get interviewed on cable news. Every time a respected celebrity or journalist like Anderson Cooper comes out, the narrative the bigots try to advance (teh homosexuals are depraved 'OTHERS'--sinners who are out to get our children) is damaged just a little bit more.

I don't think it's as rapidly as you think. Those "morons" have a tremendous amount of respect and clout in the middle of the country, as well as profound influence over one of the two major political parties. I'm gay and I care very much about what they think. Maybe in fifty years or so, they'll be as irrelevant as the KKK. But we're not there yet.

It was basically one of those things that was like if you asked him at a party he'd tell you he was gay, but, he would never say it publicly "on the record". And for obvious reasons, early in his career, it was probably a wise move. As others have stated, now that he is entrenched, he can be out much like Ellen is out, and still be able to have a wide ranging fan base and not have fear of some sort of backlash.

And where are the remaining KKK strongholds? The Midwest, the same place where you'll find most of the gay-hating morons. They are irrelevant and no one east of west of them should care what they think. No we aren't there yet, but believe me, the rapidity with which we are making progress is far more substantial tan it was for gender and racial equality. Things are changing fast and people are far more intolerant to homophobia today than they were as few as five years ago. I predict that in 50 years, the words homosexual, bisexual, heterosexual will be meaningless. Already, the younger generations recognize that their sexuality is fluid and ever-changing. They are more willing to experiment and, by doing so, gain a better understanding of themselves and others. They don't care as much for the labels as previous generations. Yes, I'm optimistic about this and for good reason.

Yeah, I guess, if by 'barely' you mean 'totally'.

While she RARELY discusses any of her life, let alone her lesbianness - she was involved/living with the woman she thanked for many years. When they broke up - a few months later - it made various news outlets and she took up with another woman a fews after that, that too made the MSM.

Another point: Anyone out there ever notice that when a 'star' of some sort talks about how great their relationship is, said relationship ends shortly afters?

Yeah and those of us with a functioning brain don't care what those morons think either. Actually it is rapidly becoming way uncool to be a homophobe. It's one of the fastest ways to social isolation. There may be a lot of gay-haters left, but they are rapidly becoming like the black-haters of old: they are being quiet about their bigotry.

If only that were true.

No, Jim Parsons is gay. The character he plays has never really questioned his sexuality but it seems pretty clear that Sheldon Cooper is straight and has feelings for Amy Farrah Fowler, which he has only RECENTLY begun to articulate and internalize.

I'm not sure about your analysis. It still looks to me as if he is dating Amy in a bow to social convention.

Amy, on the other hand, is pretty openly bi, and wants to be the roast beef in a Sheldon & Penny sammich.

They had that episode where Sheldon and Amy were broken up and he was upset, at least such as Sheldon is capable of emotion. I think that it is supposed to be more than social convention and that he actually is supposed to like her.

And yet the whole time he was doing the anti-bullying campaign, he couldn't have helped it by admitting then and there he was gay?

I never knew he was a Vanderbilt. He always did strike me a bit of a blue blood. Now, it makes sense.

Sofa King Smart: Huck And Molly Ziegler: Sofa King Smart: Anderson Cooper 180.

I like your headline better. Here, have a Thin Mint.

it was kind of melty (must be the heat affecting the tubes)... do you have one fresh from the freezer? and by one I obviously mean an entire box.

Well, that was my last one ... but I DO ... as a result of recent "controversy" ... actually have a near-full package of Oreos in the fridge.

(Still haven't determined which one uses the most crack cocaine as an active ingredient: M&Ms or Oreos.)

tankjr: It's good that he's open about this, but Cooper came out in 2006 or 2007.

Out has been putting him on their power list for years, but that's one of the reasons the Out power list is a joke--he's not the only non-out person they put on the list. They've been putting Shepard Smith oh the Out power list for the last few years too, and he's not out. Ditto for Apple's Tim Cook, who has never said anything about any aspect of his life outside of Apple yet landed on Out's power list.

Sticky Hands: schpanky: Cloudchaser Sakonige the Red Wolf: One of the strangest dreams I ever had was (sometime in 2011) when I was sitting in my car, having just pulled off the road to figure something out when suddenly, he opens my passenger door, gets in, sits down and is practically begging me to drive him to Atlanta

If you're a hetero guy it means yep you're gay. Consult a therapist.

"Please, drive me to Atlanta": The not so secret phrase for the gayest gay that two men can gay.

That would explain the large number of furries in Atlanta (joke)

Reminds me of a classic Anderson Cooper Fark headline: "Anderson Cooper to fill Brown slot"

Something like that

He kind of looked like it could be guy to me. You never heard him date anyone female or anything. Anyway non issue.

I've been told I have the worst gaydar in the world.
I was surprised when Clay Aiken came out.
I was surprised when Ricky Martin came out.
I was surprised when Lance Bass came out.

This does not surprise me.
