eddiesocket: JackieRabbit: eddiesocket: JackieRabbit: Does anyone really care anymore?

Yes. Many, many people still oppose gay rights. They have large followings and radio shows and get interviewed on cable news. Every time a respected celebrity or journalist like Anderson Cooper comes out, the narrative the bigots try to advance (teh homosexuals are depraved 'OTHERS'--sinners who are out to get our children) is damaged just a little bit more.

Yeah and those of us with a functioning brain don't care what those morons think either. Actually it is rapidly becoming way uncool to be a homophobe. It's one of the fastest ways to social isolation. There may be a lot of gay-haters left, but they are rapidly becoming like the black-haters of old: they are being quiet about their bigotry.

I don't think it's as rapidly as you think. Those "morons" have a tremendous amount of respect and clout in the middle of the country, as well as profound influence over one of the two major political parties. I'm gay and I care very much about what they think. Maybe in fifty years or so, they'll be as irrelevant as the KKK. But we're not there yet.

And where are the remaining KKK strongholds? The Midwest, the same place where you'll find most of the gay-hating morons. They are irrelevant and no one east of west of them should care what they think. No we aren't there yet, but believe me, the rapidity with which we are making progress is far more substantial tan it was for gender and racial equality. Things are changing fast and people are far more intolerant to homophobia today than they were as few as five years ago. I predict that in 50 years, the words homosexual, bisexual, heterosexual will be meaningless. Already, the younger generations recognize that their sexuality is fluid and ever-changing. They are more willing to experiment and, by doing so, gain a better understanding of themselves and others. They don't care as much for the labels as previous generations. Yes, I'm optimistic about this and for good reason.

intelligent comment below: Wayne 985: Keep in mind what the article discussed. Anti-gay legislation, bullying, condemnation. It helps to have gay people who are high profile and can spread some understanding to straights and some hope to other gays.

And yet the whole time he was doing the anti-bullying campaign, he couldn't have helped it by admitting then and there he was gay?

He was trying to maintain journalistic objectivity.

Maybe he wasn't ready yet. Better late than never. Besides, his argument about not wanting to feel unsafe in foreign countries is a pretty solid one, much more so than most famous people's arguments for not coming out.

I believe Daniel Tosh is straight. As a pin, actually. I just believe he is extremely comfortable with this sexuality and that he likes to push the envelope as a comedian.

Tosh announced his gayness sometime in the past three months (or so).
Yeah, seriously.

So I suppose he won't be invited to join the philosophy department of the University of Woolamaloo.

Yeah, but Daniel Tosh would probably announce that he's gay, have gay sex for years, get married to a guy, and then later reveal that it was all just an elaborate joke that his girlfriend eventually got tired of.

diaphoresis: Never liked AC, but now that he has 'come out', I like him less. Not for being gay, but because he just became a bigger attention whore.

He's a celebrity who's so well entrenched in his various gigs, that coming out won't hurt him. People do this to speak out for those who can't come out without facing bullying or career issues.

I applaud him.

Also, sometimes people who seem gay just want to finally set the record straight so others quit pestering them about it.

Yeah, I guess, if by 'barely' you mean 'totally'.

While she RARELY discusses any of her life, let alone her lesbianness - she was involved/living with the woman she thanked for many years. When they broke up - a few months later - it made various news outlets and she took up with another woman a fews after that, that too made the MSM.

Another point: Anyone out there ever notice that when a 'star' of some sort talks about how great their relationship is, said relationship ends shortly afters?

Foster, either Pam from 'The Office' or that one tech chick from '24', Cruise - I am positive there are many, many more. Same with health issues; Dios is the latest one that comes to mind.

I saw a comic with that plot a while back, it was two frat boys who start making out, get married, live a long life together, and as one of them is on his deathbed he says "No homo."

No, Jim Parsons is gay. The character he plays has never really questioned his sexuality but it seems pretty clear that Sheldon Cooper is straight and has feelings for Amy Farrah Fowler, which he has only RECENTLY begun to articulate and internalize.

I'm not sure about your analysis. It still looks to me as if he is dating Amy in a bow to social convention.

Amy, on the other hand, is pretty openly bi, and wants to be the roast beef in a Sheldon & Penny sammich.

5. Tempt bible-banger public figures with perfect ass and taut abs
6. Acquire same rights as heterosexuals
7. Make painful process of self-realization far less horrifying for kids
8. Reprioritize this list

And, obviously, on pink stationary.

They had that episode where Sheldon and Amy were broken up and he was upset, at least such as Sheldon is capable of emotion. I think that it is supposed to be more than social convention and that he actually is supposed to like her.
