I didn't even know they had spotters for this. That seems like a really tough job - in span of a few milliseconds how do you judge whether they have a prayer of landing, and if not how do you catch them without hurting them worse than a fall on the padding?

I'd gladly wrap my arms around Nastia Liukin and never ever let anything bad happen to her.

Or, alternately, mount her when she's prone on a gym mat and give her 35 disappointing seconds.

yep,it's her dads fault she showed up totally unprepared mentally. This wasn't the first screw up she had during the trials.

I'd spot the shiat out of her, if you know what I mean, and I think you do.

This. And I am no gymnastics expert by any stretch of the mind (no pun intended) but just mildly following the Trials she did absolutely horrible. That wasn't even her first fall from the uneven bars during the course of the event where she has looked pretty weak compared to the rest. She's still probably the hottest one though.

Sad to see a generation of greats like Liuken, Phelps, and Bolt starting to fade away fade away and lose all at the same time after dominating their respective sports for years.

Is she hot? And Legal?

She was supposed to catch the bar and swing forward, correct? How is he expected to be in a position to catch her while simultaneously being out of the way as to not impede her performance?

That, and the mat is heavily padded. His arms aren't. Seems like much more chance of injury if he tried to do anything. I know nothing of gymnastics, but it seems like he did the right thing.

Fun fact: Cathy Rigby argued in favor of gymnasts and divers competing nude. I can't find a good quote right now, as teh googlez fail me, but there's a reference here.

Just for a bit of clarification: My understanding* is that the spotter's main job is to make sure they land in the least uncomfortable / physically damaging way possible -- *not* to catch them. Just try to minimize the risk of hurting themselves, especially if the trajectory is such that they could do some real damage.

But I am open to correction, if I have that wildly wrong.

If you're right, then Dad did a good thing by not trying to catch her. She was falling flat on her front, which is a pretty safe way to land on anything since the whole body absorbs the impact.

Its probably the safest way to land period. Flat on your back can cause a back injury. Anything that's not flat, you're putting more weight on a body part and can easily twist it.

Final Destination, Final Fantasy and my personal favorite, Final Fight. Final is rarely final, especially if its in the title. Unfortunately I'm drawing a blank on more "Final" movies and can only think of the games.

The other thing that a lot of people don't grok (I certainly didn't, until I lived with one) is that Olympic-level gymnastics is very different from lower levels -- those guys and gals fall. A lot. A LOT. (It can be, one must admit, wildly entertaining at times.)

And even the Olympians are falling *a*lot*... they just don't put the tricks they haven't mastered into their competition routines.

So, we mere mortals may cringe like hell when we see someone fall from 5-10' (or more!) in the air on to a pad... but they're used to it, they know what's coming, and they know how to take it.

Most of the time. When it's a -bad- fall, man is that hard to watch.
