beta_plus: Why they ever let that poor blind and deaf woman who hid from the Nazis in an attic in Amsterdam fly an airplane is beyond me.

It's all Anne Sullivan's fault. She should have never let her know what water was.

yeah right. they're after her for back taxes.

spentmiles: My grandmother, who passed away last year at the ripe age of 102, grew up with Amelia Earhart in Des Moines. Starting in 1909, they attended public school together and grew very close through high school. My grandmother had many stories about Meeley, as she called her, which highlighted her physical strength, dexterity, and endurance. From the stories I got the sense that Amelia was more than just a tomboy. When I asked my grandmother about this, she wrung her hands and shook her head, politely refusing to tell me what was on her mind. No matter how much I pestered her, she kept quiet, but I knew that something was amiss.

It wasn't until she was on her deathbed that she told me the truth. As it happens, my grandmother and Amelia were a lot closer than I first understood. They often snuck down to the flooded quary on moonlit nights and went skinny dipping together. My grandmother said Amelia was very shy and made her cover her highs while she undressed on the shore. It all started innocently enough, but soon they began holding and cuddling and kissing one another in the water. On one particularly hot and humid night, the physicality went further than either one of them had ever experienced. They kissed passionately while squeezing one anothers buttocks beneath the waterline. To my grandmother's surprise, she felt something penetrate her vagina. It wasn't a finger either. She tried to break free, but Amelia held her tightly, thrusting until she finished. As if the rape wasn't bad enough, my grandmother turned up pregnant a few weeks later and was sent away to a convent where she never heard from Amelia again.

I know that the feminists have hoisted Amelia over their heads in celebration of their movement, but I think my grandmother's story throws some serious doubt on her gender. She may have been a hermaphrodite at best, though I suspect that her eccentric parents had a male child that they raised as a female. I did some digging on this and found out that a tabloid of the time had first person evidence to this effect which they were about to break to the world. Amelia couldn't bear having her records and accolades stripped from her as a fraud, so she crashed her plane into the ocean, forever cementing her heroic tale. Too bad it's all a bunch of bollocks.

I really do hope this investigation uncovers her plane and hopefully some remnants of her body that modern scientific methods can use to determine her true gender.

Love. You.

You're thinking of Miss Jane Pittman, the famous anthropologist.

You're an idiot. Amelia Earhart wasn't blind or deaf. You're thinking of Anne Frank, the first woman on the moon.

Cheron: probesport: She was a Nazi sympathizer that flew a Russian plan during the raid on Pearl Harbor, she died when her ejection seat failed at 80,000 feet.

The Russians had nothing to do with Pearl Harbor it was attacked by the Germans.

What all you amateur historians forgot was that she was Jim Morrison's live in girl friend for five years in the mid 70's. The had a nice place in Paris

Nice try. First off, it was the Chinese. They had funny eyes, that's how I remember. Secondly, I just saw a movie that proves she was actually living in New York and secretly had Ben Stiller's love child before he became famous. I think he was working security or something at the time.

No no no, you're thinking of Jane Hathaway, Drysdale's assistant. Margaret Mead is the deaf, blind pilot killed when the Iragi's flew those planes into the Space Shuttle over Pearl Harbor.

This picture was taken when she was dating Kennedy.

She was seeing Gore Vidal's dad, Gene, and he was the first head of what later became the FAA. So maybe there's a grain of something in that.

Now the blame for her disappearing lies on Purdue University. They bought the plane.

Susan Butler's "East to the Dawn" is what the 2009 movie "Amelia" was based on.

As someone lese noted this group goes and looks for her once a year. Its a funded vacation. Kind of like when your favorite sitcom family goes to Hawaii.

Not drunk. He was blind. He left his white cane at the last airport they stopped at, after that it was all downhill from there.

My grandfather was in the FAA, from the beginning. Knew Amelia well. Male chauvanist that he was (not that that's a bad thing) he told me more than once that Amelia was one of the nicest people he ever knew, 100% genuine class.

Having said that, I'm waiting for the movie on Jackie Cockran to come out. I can't imagine why it hasn't been made yet.
