Men in Black 3 has now earned $599.4 million worldwide to become the highest-grossing title in the Sony franchise.

In 1997, Men in Black earned $589.4 million (MIB3 had already eclipsed Men in Black II, which grossed $441.8 million globally).

Does anyone want to inflation-adjust that? I'm all mathed out.

I'm kinda surprised about that. MIB III is one movie I have heard NO ONE talking about. Not at work, or on the forums I frequent or the two clubs I'm apart of. Guess I'm in the wrong demographic.

It was the better of the three movies actually.. probably didn't want to break your heart seeing that your favorite was probably on the turd pile that was MiBII.

Apparently I need to get out from under my rock more. I didn't even know there was a MIB III.

2012-07-02 04:09:11 AM
$589.4 in 1997 = $843.94 in 2012

Of course, I have no idea what the profit margin is like these days compared to those days.

I'm wasn't going to give the franchise another chance after the turdfest that MiB2 was, but maybe I'll check it out on netflix.

The movie's international cume

"Cume"? Why can't insider Hollywood rags SPEAK F*CKING ENGLISH?!?

Let's agree to disagree...

After MiB2 I was expecting a crappy film, and the lack of serious advertising all but confirmed it, but honestly it was a very good film, and possibly better than 1. Tommy Lee Jones is getting ooooooooold though.

You expect "journalists" to be able to spell accumulation these days? I sume that's what they were go 4.

It's not a war on the English language, it's a war on spellcheck.

I'm fine with this. MIB 2 was terrible, but MIB 3 was actually pretty good.

My Son and I went to see it and not expecting too much. Very fun movie, more low key than the others. Good story line and supporting alien was great. I gotta give them credit usually by the 3rd movie the powers to be try to cram so much into it that the movie becomes a bloated mess (see spiderman 3) MIB III was clean.

I'm watching 'Bigfoot' right now on syfy. It rocks.

Happy to hear this. I liked the original but felt the second one fell flat (mostly due to the excess story they needed to do concerning the end point of the original.)
With MiBIII it sounds like they waited just long enough to get some decent ideas on the table instead of shoveling out a half baked money grab.

We always get these $ amounts on movies, how about some attendance numbers so movies can actually be compared to others of the past more acurately.

2012-07-02 06:36:55 AM
I'd forgotten that it was released, trailers didn't look bad. Course, I didn't see the first 2 in the theaters, either.

Downloaded it. It was nothing special.

The movie's international cume through Sunday was an impressive $429.8 million, compared to $169.6 million domestically.

Just keep this one in your back pocket, for the next time someone starts talking about how terrible the US is compared to the rest of the first world.

2012-07-02 07:10:50 AM
Also, are we really living in a world where there's this recognized vast chasm of quality between MiB 1 and 2? You could play mad-libs with those two scripts and it probably wouldn't make any difference.

"Cume" is Hollywood slang for "cumulative total." I imagine it's less cumbersome to write or say "cume," reducing five syllables to one.

I was actually surprised that it was pretty good. I'm grading on a curve of course given the abortion that was MiB 2. Tommy Lee Jones wasn't in it enough and Rip Torn wasn't in it at all but I knew that going in. And the "twist" ending kind of negated a lot of the first one. Still it was better than my admittedly low expectations.

And of course it made more money than the first given inflation, a wider foreign market and larger ticket prices for 3D.

2012-07-02 07:48:17 AM
I thoroughly enjoyed MiB 3 after the shiatfest that was MiB 2. The action aspects were fun, the sci-fi elements were great, the comedy was just about right. I recommend it, it'll help get out the taste of the previous entry.

You're not supposed to until the sequel comes out.

No. Just look at the villains. There's no way you can compare Jemaine Clement's Shouty McAngrypants to Vincent D'Onofrio's Evil Cockroach. The bet part of MIB 3 was Josh Brolin's impression of Tommy Lee. And that still wasn't as good as the real Tommy Lee in his prime in the first film.

I enjoyed Men in Black 2. The Post Office scene alone was worth it. I loved Rosario Dawson and, God help me, I enjoyed Lara Flynn Boyle as the bad guy!

With Jaydun Smiff and that kid who plays Joffery.

I thought it was clever that they made a whole movie including his character without needing him that much. That's why I thought they wouldn't be able to do a fourth.

/MiB3 is a very fun movie. Haders gonna Hade

If you're in the "North American" demographic, that would explain why; most of MiB 3's total comes from the international market.

That's what sucked about it, because don't think it did well enough to warrant a sequel.

I liked MIB3, nothing over the top just a good summer movie that you'll watch again a few times when it hits HBO etc......

I hope they bring back Linda Fiorentino for MIB IV . I found this video of an ad she made in 2011 for the Italian American Foundation. She looks pretty good.

I heard she is a total coont on set. I think that's partially why she didn't come back for MiB 2 and also Kevin Smith said she was a pain in the ass while filming Dogma. Smith even wrote a jab at her that was used in Scary Movie 3 (the part where George Carlin calls his leather chair that he farks "Linda").

IT's just Hollywood-speak. They have their little buzzwords just like the business and marketing communities have. Try reading Variety for the really obnoxious ones.

Kevin Smith thinks everyone but him is a pain in the ass. Just like how he won't shut up about Bruce Willis.

Downloading is taking something of value without paying for it. That's what we in a civilized society call theft.

Nope, it's copying something of value. The original remains wherever it was found in the first place.

Hollywood is run by Jews so yes, of course there will be a MiB IV.

MIB3 was the best movie I've seen so far this summer. Brolin was a great casting choice and nailed the role of a young K. Perhaps it was the bad taste of MIB2 that kept U,S, moviegoers away.

I don't know how they do a fourth and keep Brolin involved though. J is back in 2012.

I was thinking this last night. And I saw it the weekend it opened.

The reviewer here wrote that it wasn't as good as MiB but waaaaay better than MiBII and he was absolutely right.

Bad timing. It got buried in all the competition. Too many movies this summer. It didn't help that they waited a decade since the last one. Spider-Man was a decade ago and they already did a remake.

Yup. If you are expecting anything different than 1 and 2 (specifically 1), you'll be disappointed. If you're expecting to be entertained for 1:40 or whatever with silliness and action, you will be.

And besides that, the third film a had a much larger budget and the actors and producers likely took a larger cut of the box office gross.

But I'm sure we're likely to still get a 4th film.
