Oh, and as one of the people who watches the show, and will usually defend bronies...

I don't get the convention thing. I also don't get cosplay, fanfiction, or a lot of the other obsessive fan things.

Oh, and to address the shiatstorm coming this way... there's no difference between a Brony convention and a Star Trek convention, or an Anime convention, and a Brony going to a convention dressed up is no different than the guy in the stands at a Packers game wearing no shirt and a cheese hat.

The Pony Movement doesn't get anywhere near the level of a 4,000 attendee con if the internet doesn't collectively freak out about Ponies. Agree or disagree?

Good for them. It's great to have a hobby and to translate internet interaction into real-world interaction. I met my white power militia buddies ingame WoW. At first I was like "hey, HItler420" and "Holohoax69" sure like to talk about how orcs are ruining their neighborhood and schools" but then a lightbulb went off and eventually we met up and I have friends for life now.

Really nothing beyond what you would read here. Basically a link to a yahoo article and then some comments. I was expecting much worse than this...

"Better this than an "Occupy" scumbag, I suppose..."

""No, I'm not gay...I just pretend I am at conventions"."

"Childish or effeminate men is THE major theme of modern media."

"The only up-side to this crap is that these 'men' are extremely unlikely to ever reproduce, thus mitigating the long-term genetic damage to the herd."

There were even some people defending it

"I think the show is fantastic. It is essentially a complete remake of the POS 1980s version you're thinking of."

"That is kind of weird. But then I used to come back to the dorm my freshman and sophomore years in college and watch "Duck Tales" in the common area, so I probably shouldn't talk. Half the guys on my floor watched that and other cartoons in the afternoons lol."

FirstNationalBastard: Oh, and to address the shiatstorm coming this way... there's no difference between a Brony convention and a Star Trek convention, or an Anime convention,

I've been to SF cons of various kinds, and there's a huge difference between different cons. Still, it's like the difference between Bach and Mozart -- acquired arts can seem the same to people who haven't acquired them. And acquiring them doesn't make you a better person; it just lets you appreciate them. Doesn't guarantee you will.

Fandom of any kind is a big place, with a wide range of people.

and a Brony going to a convention dressed up is no different than the guy in the stands at a Packers game wearing no shirt and a cheese hat.

This is true. Fanatic uniform is fanatic uniform.

I know four bronies in real life, that I can think of. One is a pretty normal guy, or at least he certainly passes for normal. The other three are attractive women. I'm still not getting into it, though. I was a casual fan of the Powerpuff Girls, and that's about as far as I go in that particular direction.

But that's just me.

What James and his friends need is a good healthy dose of The Three Stooges to snap them out of this. About 20 - 25 Stooges shorts, mostly with Curly, and a few "Shemps" thrown in, should be enough to get them back on the right path. .

(Shemp was always better than Curly, not that Curly was bad)

general homophobia references, and this gem

I think the show is fantastic. It is essentially a complete remake of the POS 1980s version you're thinking of.

This is all a plan by government scientists to get a certain type of people to organize themselves so they can all be 'culled from the herd' easily. This BronyCon event was just the thing to get a bunch of them together to infect them with something that they'll pass quickly among eachother. Since STDs are not an option it's more likely more dangerous. Something that can be transmitted through sweat or coughed out from the mucous membranes. It'll probably get out of control and destroy society as we know it. All because of bronies

2012-07-01 07:59:56 PM
I wanted to go to BronyCon but after seeing that it ended up being 4,000 people (mostly aspy neckbeards with fedoras and flip-flops), I realized that I probably wouldn't have enjoyed myself much.

In fact, I think I had a better time last night going to a burlesque show with my fiance (he's also a brony) and a couple other fans of MLP (both het., one with aspergers... I will never go with that one to a burlesque show again).

So, all in all, I suppose even though I love the show and a lot of the fan creations, I'm really getting sick of many of the fans. I wish they'd all go back to Pokemon/Digimon/Sonic and stop creeping out all the neurotypical fans and non-fans.

2012-07-01 08:08:23 PM
I rather like the cartoon, but feel no need to participate some greater movement built from it. I like watching Star Trek, but I don't feel the need to learn Klingon or write a Kirk/Spock slashfic.

In addition, going to any fan convention (for any fandom, really) would be destructive to my soul, for I have an unparalleled sensitivity to second-hand embarrassment. I cringe when watching awkward scenes unfold on "The Office." I'm fairly certain actually attending something like this would cause my heart to give out.

Agreed.

Although, I'm betting season 3 will be the end.

Only 13 episodes announced so far, and those 13 episodes bring the show to the magic syndication number of 65. The show isn't exactly what's making Hasbro the money, and the reruns will always be there to sell toys.

Yup. We're going to start The Vinyl Scratch Tapes season 2 soon, I'm currently voicing various roles for the Doctor Whooves Adventures, I've got a few parts in the Welcome to Ponyville game, I'm playing Diamond Tiara in the Fallout: Equestria audio adaptation, and the crew doing Doctor Whooves is about to finish casting roles for a radio-style audio drama based on Daring Do (I'm playing Daring). Those aren't counting the smaller projects I'm also in.

The amount of work is crazy, but it's fun, and for the most part the bronies involved in the voice acting side of things are pretty down to earth and fun to chat with. There's some drama but it's with only a couple VAs, one of which is too popular for her own good and expects parts to be handed to her on a silver platter. But I digress.

I never find out about any of the drama of the community, I'm pretty disconnected from things, all things considered.

Also, it's always fun when you can actually contribute something to the community -- my contribution is much much smaller though -- all I'm good for is lettering and typesetting. Have you seen the pony 4komas? I'm the one doing the scanlation

I've been to a few. It's just a thing to do for fun. You meet (semi) famous people, you can buy signed crap, and it's all in the same place. I got to listen to a voice actors class by Rob Paulsen, voice of Pinky, Raphael and about 10 million other awesome characters. And see some Jawas and some Klingons hanging out eating crappy hotel food. And see large women selling Kirk/ Spock gay fan-fiction scripts. It's a hell of an experience.

When the movie the Aristocrats came out, there was a scene where comics were commenting on what the aristocrat's telling said about the comic at hand. Something along the lines of, "it's all a joke, but if most of the comic's version is about animals, you wanna keep the guy away from your pets. If mostly the comic talks about the family's children, then you certainly want to keep the comic away from your kids" In essence the telling of the joke was an insight to the comics personal fetish proclivities.

That in mind, when you have farkers who look at a well written cartoon show being watched by adults and they IMMEDIATELY start biatching how everyone who likes it must be a pedo, then that my friend is a farker that should never be left alone with a child. It's very much in the same vein as ultra-militant anti-gay god-botherers (evangelicals) the louder they scream, the more cock they end up getting caught gobbling.

Yes. Also people who dislike bathroom humor love being shat on, and anyone who thinks "ew" when two dudes kiss is a tremendous homosexual. Good job, great point

I wasn't talking to you. Your not worth talking to, short of telling off. If you were half as honest as you are an asshole all your posts would consist of 44Pt Red font Crying out "PAY ATTENTION TO ME!" At least then people could respect you for your honesty, as it stands you are a hemroid upon the asshole of the trolls that live underneath bridges in old fairy tales. You are a loser. A sad pathetic little weenie going out of your way to biatch and moan about a subject you claim to despise but can't stop talking about. for farks sake you had almost 5 posts in a row talking to no one in particular. I'll finish my reiterating that you are seriously mentally disturbed and if you had any capacity for introspection you would be ashamed of the way you act. Truly ashamed.

There's a difference between liking something and being obsessed with it. My kid likes Phinneaus and Ferb. I like it. It's a funny show. I might sit down and watch a bit with him from time to time. It has some amusing references that kids probably won't get. The difference is that I don't watch every episode over and over, buy a bunch of merchandise for it, write fanfiction, and go to conventions with a lot of neckbeards.

I enjoy Star Trek. I've watched the shows and the movies. I like it. I like a bit of discussion about it. I'm not about to learn Klingon or whip up a big costume for a convention. I don't write fanfiction. I don't spam the internet with it. I simply enjoy the show.

There's a big difference between liking and obsession. If you're labeling yourself as a Brony, then you're probably on the latter end of the scale, and that's just not healthy.

Do you have any idea how many farkers have told him that. At different times, in different threads, for different reasons? He's literally told to seek out a mental heath professional by multiple posters in every thread he participates in.

It's really sad. Pretty much he's worth telling off once and then ignoring, it's a conversation that you have absolutely nothing to gain by being dragged into.

here's the thing about people, on subjects they're passionate about, they have almost no shame

i mean look at the guys at sporting events who're well, airing their manboobs or in dress, or the things people will do for a popular entertainment franchise like twilight or that bieber girl

the thing is, when you make it your mission to go against it you must ask yourself why has it infected you emotionally, because the true opposite of the love of something is not hate, but indifference, hate it is just love perverted and twisted to anger like a jealous lover who stalks you

Sports fans are one thing (I might disagree a bit as they're fans of real world events/teams, but we could quibble all day), but at least political obsession is something that is working on a real-world issue. MLP is fiction. Politicians are, at least physically, people, and the decisions made can affect everyone.

Sports fans tend to keep their fandom to sports threads. Twilight fans and fans of that beiber whatsit don't flood stupid image macros everywhere. Brony behavior isn't just shameful but aggressively shameful, and when the opportunity presents itself I'll return the (richly deserved) irritation in their direction by reminding them of their shamefulness. They get Real Mad about it too, but the person they should be getting mad at is in their mirrors, or perhaps at their demonstrably terrible parent(s).

Yes, but he's still a person. There's plenty of fiction in politics, but there's reality at the core, real people, real events, real decisions. MLP is fiction. Maybe it's fun fiction that you like, but it's still just complete make-believe. You don't elect ponies to an office so they can make major decisions on behalf of the people. Yes, there are some real imbeciles who obsess over politics to a hideous degree. I'm not saying that it's exactly healthy, but I wouldn't classify them the same way that I'd classify those who are obsessed with outright fictional stories, whether they be hardcore Bronies, Trekkies, or whatever. Political conspiracy nuts might be somewhat close, but there's a lot more paranoid schizophrenia involved there...

Not everyone involved in politics subscribes to the "RAH RAH GO TEAM" BS that has become so prevalent of late. And getting real here, it isn't the same thing as obsessive fandom over fictional stories, because despite the massive amounts of horseshiat swirling around the world of politics, there are still real decisions being made by real people that affect real people. The latest episode of MLP or another work of fiction? No, that's just entertainment. MLP isn't going to try to outlaw gay marriage or pass universal healthcare, FFS. I don't see how you can even begin to equate the two. Not that a lot of political obsessives are exactly healthy people either, but I wouldn't put them in the same group as those obsessing over entertainment.

Still a bit upset that I was unable to go. My ticket was paid for and everything, (had some SWAG from John De Lancie that is still being shipped to me) but it would have been very irresponsible of me to go.

No monetary safety net, and clutch slipping on the car is no time to go on a 500 mile drive.

Agreed.

Although, I'm betting season 3 will be the end.

Only 13 episodes announced so far, and those 13 episodes bring the show to the magic syndication number of 65. The show isn't exactly what's making Hasbro the money, and the reruns will always be there to sell toys.

I doubt the Hub would be so foolish as to cancel their number one rated show and Hasbro's cash cow. They always split production between two studios, explaining why only 13 have been announced so far.

Just do us a favor, will ya? It's awful hard to confront our own...enthusiasm...for ponies and brony culture, so why don't you and the rest of the bronys keep tabs on all of it and we'll do our best to get to a place where we can enjoy it too.

After seeing ponies come up so often on Fark, I gave a few episodes a watch. It's smartly written, thankfully has a few parts for parents who want to watch what their kids are watching to get some enjoyment, and the characters are cute and very well animated. Every time Twilight Sparkle starts to sing I think of Princess Clara on Drawn Together and I wish that were on instead.

I certainly think the teeth gnashers are more entertaining than the Bronies, if anyone cares about my 0.02.

What's also sad is articles like this that selectively pick out a really obese person or an over the top costume to try and stereotype all fans of the show. It's the same crap that Star Trek and Star Wars fans have had to put up with for decades. Most bronies I've seen are just like anyone else, and almost always extremely nice.

FirstNationalBastard: Oh, and as one of the people who watches the show, and will usually defend bronies...

Yeah, those aren't the same. Sorry. Brony does not equal a Packers fan. But keep telling yourself that.

Spider-Man walked around the convention. Why? Because one meme isn't good enough. Real cosplayers go for the quadruple meta-meme.

Strolpol: I rather like the cartoon, but feel no need to participate some greater movement built from it.

Skyfrog: Uvalde_Slim: If I hadn't already given up on humanity, I'd be really sad because of this.

Not the Bronies, but the pathetic people who feel the need to act all holier-than-thou and shiat on everyone else because that's the only way they can derive any pleasure from their own sad, pathetic, disappointing lives.

A spartan bond that celebrates ass slaps, violent cuddling, and those who have no athletic ability who feel compelled to paint their entire bodies in various colors and shout at men wearing full body armor. It's really masculine over-compensation at it's finest.

I love these threads. In the last one, I asked "What draws a grown man to watch a cartoon aimed primarily towards little girls?"

One guy gave me a lecture about social anthropology and said there was no difference between the likes of men and women. Another guy said he was a hunter and a man's man and loved the show. Not one person could admit that this show was made (primarily) for little girls....NOT ONE. Why? If Bronies are so secure with their love for MLP, why can't they admit this fact? Sure, there are adult references...every cartoon has them. We all remember the WB cartoons referencing old movies and even politics.

My one question for the grown men again. What made you start watching a cartoon aimed at little girls? This is the strange part for me. I don't care if adults watch cartoons, many do. Please, no answers of "It's NOT aimed at little girls." Bullshiat. MLP has and will always be a little girl's toy. They made a cartoon back in the day to sell toys, same today. They did not make this cartoon to entertain adult men. You guys just happened to enjoy it unexpectedly. You were never the target demo.

What made you start eating raw shellfish?
What made you start keeping a stamp collection?
What made you start being a Christian?
What made you start anything?

Something about it clicked with them. The new MLP is well-written, doesn't talk down to the viewers, contains material that also appeals to older and other-gendered people, and is fun to watch. It's like how Transformers is "made for little boys" but many people who are older and some who are female enjoy it too.

And that's another thing, it's funny how no one screeches and demonizes females who like Transformers, G. I. Joe, or other male-oriented shows.

YES IT DOES MATTER WHY DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND THAT!

I CANT SLEEP AT NIGHT IF I KNOW SOMEONE MIGHT BE DOING SOMETHING I DISAPPROVE OF! If I can't sleep, I can't rest and the next day at work will be awful. Sleep deprivation will cause me to screw up at my job, getting me fired and definitely ruining the customers day. Not only will I then be penniless and have to start suckling at the teat of Big Government, the customer who's order I ruined will have their own bad day that could in turn cause THEM to screw up and lose their job, creating a cascade of unemployment that will eventually lead to the collapse of western civilization.

All because you wanted to watch ponies.

Actually, you never asked that question. You merely declared it so and made ignorant statements regarding gender roles being hard-wired.

But I'll answer this new question: Yep. It was created with young girls as the target demo. I actually said as much last time. I started watching it for two reasons: 1) I was sitting around bored one weekend and it popped up as "Netflix Recommended", and 2) the image macros were farking funny.

Why did Netflix recommend MLP? Because I five-starred Animaniacs (and a bunch of other cartoons...).

Lo and behold, Netflix suggested a cartoon that has similar themes and content! What a shock!

But keep up with your butthurt over other people liking things you don't like and not acting in ways you want them to. I'm sure it'll get ya far in life.

In my case, it was a friend of mine who recommended the series to me. His daughter loves the show and he just watched a few episodes with her and went nuts for it.

I will admit, when he first mentioned the show, I was skeptic. I mean, I always found the original boring and bland, but he just said that Lauren Faust was behind it, so I decided to give it a chance.

I don't know what to say. The writing is great, the character design and animation look fantastic, and there is a lot of effort put into the whole product. Is, in my opinion, a genuinely entertaining, charming and even heartwarming show.

It is a show for girls? Yes it is. At least in the principle. But the main focus of the show is making something great for the girls, but that can be enjoyed by everybody else.

I mean, the creators may have a target in mind, but it's obvious that they also cater the peripheral demography.

What I find hilarious is people acting like if bronies where the first fandom where some of it's members take things to creepy extremes.

You NEVER FARKING asked.

I'm the guy that goes out hunting. And I admit it's a girl's show. I just think it's a really good show -- I guess that's why it has such a strong peripheral demographic appeal.

Uchiha_Cycliste: loonatic112358: BigJake: yes, pedophilia has been around for quite awhilethey've just rarely been so open about it

so, how long have you been doing it then?

I just learned about "Brony culture" last night after some comedian I follow on twitter caught mad heat for joking about it. Then I read through this thread and the bolded is all anyone tries to take away from it. Hey, we all have our guilty pleasures. I'm certainly the butt of jokes for mine. But never have I stooped to something so childish as "I'm rubber and your glue" to try to defend the indefensible.

Of course, recognizing your guilty pleasure as guilty pleasure requires some level of self-awareness. And I don't think there was enough self-awareness at that convention to fill up a thimble. But it makes them happier that way so I can't take the piss out too much.
