EvilEgg: I would think the calligrapher just keeps on for who ever is in office, it takes skill so you just can't make a bundler's son head calligrapher.

Pretty much. East and West Wing staff are political appointees. White House staff (stewards, cooks, maintenance people, etc) are Federal employees and civil servants, who stay from one administration to another.

/One of the WH stewards was there for over 40 years.

That's why there are so many bad neighborhoods filled with crime, and a lot of ex-cons. These are the people who commute from far away to these jobs. You notice in the old days, restaurants and other shops had families working there, now they hire cheap ex-cons or immigrants

Calligraphy is a talent. Superior talent costs money. I briefly thought "perhaps the assistant could be replaced by a pen plotter" but I don't know if they make those anymore. Might have to use a vinyl cutter. Pen ink on paper has a very different look and feel than you would get with any printer.

Cost of Living folks...

When I lived in the DC area two years ago, I made $76k and drove a brand-spanking new Lexus while living in one of the most expensive areas (McLean).

$100k/year for one person is pretty darn well-off.

Yes. Some might say it's an appropriate salary for, say, a skilled worker at the top of his game serving directly under the head of state of the world's largest economy?

It should be noted that some White House Residence Staff members (which include housekeepers and groundskeepers as well as chefs and calligraphers) have worked there for decades, not just under the current administration.

Shhhh, facts and logic are unwelcome in a troll thread.

Isn't this the Congress' responsibility? I mean, they approve the budgets that literally keep the lights on in the White House.

Although I miss the days where the GOP was whimpering that, as a cost-cutting measure, they should take away Obama's teleprompter.

I don't care who created those posts , and unless the constitution says we have to have a presidential calligrapher the position should be eliminated as it has to be cheaper to farm what ever work he does out.

Not saying all of his assistants are unneeded but i would not hurt to look and see where money could be saved by eliminating some of them.

That goes for congress and all the heads of the cabinet departments.

skinnycatullus: Mentat: In DC? Neither. $96,725 is about $67,000 in Kansas City. Respectable, but certainly not rolling in the cash.

These arguments always make me wonder how bad it is for folks who make 15 or 20 per hour in places like DC or Berkeley or NYC and how they can survive without eating a bullet after a while.

Not saying I'd be rolling in cash, but If I made 96K in DC, my wife and I would vacation in Europe for a couple of weeks every summer and have enough left over to spend Christmas in the Caribbean.

I make under 35k per year living in NYC (which i think is close to $15-20 per hour if my crappy math is correct). I do have it easy to a degree, because my apartment is owned and I only have to pay the maintenance on it, but that still eats up a good chunk of my budget. I manage to eat well and have money to save and see movies and whatnot, but if i were making just 5k more a year, my life would be much easier. I'd have more to contribute to my IRA and more to put into savings (which is pretty decent). I'm in the process of looking for a better paying job presently, even though I love my current job. I've got a lot of skills and a strong desire to move forward in my career (who doesn't).

Also, I think a good calligrapher here in the city, who does like wedding invitations and stuff, would probably make close to 96k, just from all the crazy rich people here wanting "unique" invitations, etc. It is a skill and not everyone has it. like being a plumber or welder or something. how much does the White House plumber make?

Did you miss the post where it was pointed out that the calligrapher does not work for the president, he works for the White House? He's (or she) part of the permanent staff and does all the fancy writing for whatever documentation comes out of there. Chances are this same person worked for Bush, Clinton, and Bush Sr. It's not like this person is pulling down six figures just to sit around and wait for Obama to say something.

BSABSVR: TheDumbBlonde: make me some tea: Jobs that require top-level security clearances come at a premium. Imagine that.

It would nice if they gave those jobs to people who could actually keep a secret.

Hear lots of secrets from the calligraphy department, have you?

Given that the calligrapher would be privy to the President's schedule, the guests at various functions etc prior to any official announcements, then discretion would certainly matter.

Sounds pretty cheap to hire one of the best artists in the world full-time.

A cheesy, NYC graphics artist earns an average of $71K. Nothing to see...

2012-07-01 07:46:08 PM
1. Calligraphy is an art that takes years to perfect. Many of the invitations, cards and other special documents the white house puts out are still done by hand.
2. The assistant must know almost everything the lead knows, including their style of writing.
3. You try filling out 1,000 place cards by hand with pen and ink and getting them all the right size, spelling and style. I dare you.

While we're at it, all the electrical wiring should be removed from the White House since electricity isn't in the Constitution either. Which means firing all the White House electricians too, most who have been federal employees for years Candles were good enough for our forefathers, so they should be good enough for the White House.

Yeah, they pulled out this happy horseshiat last year too.

Link

"This crowd is being paid a total of $37,121,463 this year. That's up seven staff members and nearly $4 million from 2008, the last year of George W. Bush's presidency.

"Fully 141 Obama aides -- or nearly one-in-three -- earn more than $100,000 a year. That's also up from the 130 with that scale salary in Bush's last year."

Gasp! Seven more staff members than Bush! Eleven more staff members making more than a 100K! Oh, the humanity!
