OgreMagi: gblive: Irony at it's best.....Glad to see that 3 calligraphers are earning $96000, $94000 and $86000...yet one Ethics Advisor on staff earning 72,000......

Why are they even paying an ethics advisor? It's not like they serve any purpose in D.C.

Ethics advisers are paid so little because they don't seem to be very good at their job.

Maybe its because nobody ever consults them?

thisispete: BSABSVR: TheDumbBlonde: make me some tea: Jobs that require top-level security clearances come at a premium. Imagine that.

It would nice if they gave those jobs to people who could actually keep a secret.

Hear lots of secrets from the calligraphy department, have you?

Given that the calligrapher would be privy to the President's schedule, the guests at various functions etc prior to any official announcements, then discretion would certainly matter.

Congratulations, you rebutted a point I didn't make.

Bathia_Mapes: grimlock1972: I don't care who created those posts , and unless the constitution says we have to have a presidential calligrapher the position should be eliminated as it has to be cheaper to farm what ever work he does out.

Not saying all of his assistants are unneeded but i would not hurt to look and see where money could be saved by eliminating some of them.

That goes for congress and all the heads of the cabinet departments.

While we're at it, all the electrical wiring should be removed from the White House since electricity isn't in the Constitution either. Which means firing all the White House electricians too, most who have been federal employees for years Candles were good enough for our forefathers, so they should be good enough for the White House.

Candles and whale oil were good enough for the founding fathers but Sn0bama needs electric bulbs for some reason.

Probably so his official calligraphers can write things in Muslim.

Cost of Living folks...

When I lived in the DC area two years ago, I made $76k and drove a brand-spanking new Lexus while living in one of the most expensive areas (McLean).

$100k/year for one person is pretty darn well-off.

Yes. Some might say it's an appropriate salary for, say, a skilled worker at the top of his game serving directly under the head of state of the world's largest economy?

Sure, if you're single...but if you've got a family, it's a whole different matter.

Need a bigger place...likely another car...medical, food...etc.
Not including their needs and desires...much less yours.

Considering a good 2 bedroom apt is around $1700/mo
or a family home is $500K+...are starting prices...unless you want a HUGE commute. (not a good idea in DC)

A number does not equate the need...it's all relative.

CSB:

Not long after 9/11I was once sitting in a restaurant reading Illuminatus, and using an Apple warranty card as a bookmark. The warranty card had the terms printed in a number of languages, a couple of which were from the Middle East, but I wouldn't be able to identify them.

Three rednecks walked by and noticed the bookmark, then sat down on the other side of the counter and proceeded to point and mumble at me.

Finally, they got loud and wanted answers. Pointing to the card on the table, they wanted to know how I was able to "read Muslim."

I said, "This? This is a warranty card."

Loudest one got threatening and bellowed back, "So you CAN read Muslim!" It went downhill from there.

It took a while, and some customer/staff intervention, for them to calm down and understand that I did not have explosives strapped to my chest.

Being able to care for a family and send your kids to private school while living in a large house is one of the decisions a rich person can make.

I was renting a 3 bedroom house in Annandale, inside the beltway, for $1750. That's not because decent 2-bedroom apartments aren't expensive, but because apartment complexes suck.

Once the rent is over about $1500, you should look into the home rental and get the hell out of apartments.

I don't mind if the people working in the office of the most powerful Governmental position in the world get paid well. I do mind if the garbage men in my neighborhood get a better salary and pension than many people with advanced degrees and skills get in the private sector. Which they do, and I've got the property taxes to show for it.

Let's just do everything in comic sans on the laser printer.

Republican hypocritical talking point 34023:

"You can't tax rich people they earned that money" vs "Anyone in government service doesn't deserve to get paid more than a Walmart Greeter"

I've gotten to handle formal invitations to state dinners and the like before. They're sure as hell not done on a printer. The calligraphy and paper is VERY nice. The envelopes are made from nicer paper than your diploma is printed on.

Invitations, placecards, of course, but I would also imagine the White House calligraphers handle all the various commissions for ambassadors and presidential advisers. There are also a bunch of student awards that get nice certificates, so on and so forth, and every bit of it has to be perfect.

Yeah, you pay 'em.

I want them to haul trash for the rate the market sets for hauling trash. No more, no less.

Eh, that's probably total compensation, not salary. In industry total compensation (health insurance, etc) usually comes out to twice to three times salary, not sure what it is for government jobs, though.

Basically, not unreasonable for the work they're getting out of the guy (I believe the term for the amount of stationery/invitations/etc that the White House goes through is "farktons").

I hate to say this champ, but garbage men get paid well, period. It's a job that not many want to do. And take your "market wage" shiat and shove it up your ass. Ayn Rand doesn't apply to real life. Go back to the Sea Stead in your kiddie pool.

Seems to me being a White House assistant would have awesome perks and would look pretty awesome on one's resume, in addition to being very conducive to making awesome connections. "Job creation" indeed :)

What do you think the market rate will be when trash starts piling up on your sidewalk because no one wants to do the job?

But it makes private contractors who made it wealthy, and redneck kids with no real education a steady good paying job, so it's okay!
