I still remember a few months back, some lawmaker (I think it was Georgia) was proposing drug tests to everyone who gets a government check, from welfare to government employees. A reporter asked if Congress would be included, and that guy lost his shiat in a "HOW DARE YOU!" fit of self-righteousness.

It was pretty obvious who this guy was trying to target with that proposal.

Why do you want to punish businesses? It's not the liquor store or casino's responsibility to make sure people make good decisions.

The thing that bothers me is that all this does is reinforce the belief that all welfare recipients are druggies so that makes it ok to cut funding to them and Jesus will be cool with it.

When faced with reality (ie: only 1% failed the drug test in Florida), these same people deny it and try to make up with as many excuses as they can to reinforce what they already believed in.

So, these states are figuring out novel ways to use the money they stole from unemployment recipients? I have to say, using it to cut welfare rolls is pretty damn ingenious. Funding drug testing for welfare is just beautiful, in how, it divides the starving poor against the starving almost homeless poorer. This isn't the Federal Government causing pain, so it must be a good thing. The only drug they'll find is from an evil weed that doesn't poison you, it doesn't make you crazy, it isn't physically addictive, nor do people sell sex with their babies to obtain it. It's not processed and grows unattended. The other heavy drug users are in the legal system already, and they don't qualify for welfare.

We have a concept in the US called the "social contract". The quid pro quo of this contract reads roughly that for value received of not starving to death in the streets and generally having a slightly better than subsistence level of existing, the poor covenant not to rise up en masse to burn, loot and murder the wealthy.

FTFA: The welfare legislation - which passed the Senate 24-9 and the House 73-17 - requires new welfare applicants to undergo a special screening process. If suspicion is raised after the screening, then the applicant will be tested for drugs.

I am pretty sure I know how this screening process will go. Look to see if the applicant is black. Test them.

FYI, referring to an instant lottery ticket as "a scratcher" is also grounds for refusal of service.

I would guess that these laws actually do catch more than the numbers suggest because most stoners aren't going to waste the money to get themselves drug tested when they know they can't pass, instead they'll turn to crime and loot garages, cars, homes, till they finally get busted and get processed into the prison complex. And this is they reason these laws are started in the first place. The states will spend the same money, probably more, but it'll be going into the hands of the "Worthy" instead of helping those that actually need it. America, a love story (for the wealthy).
