You spelled €ars wrong, subby. They probably don't have to buy all that stuff in USD.

I don't think requiring it in the car will make anyone use them. Until they are pulled over and now the police can save resources by using the driver's.

It's a stupid law, probably enacted because someone who makes those devices has a friend in high places.

Meanwhile, I had to but a high vis jacket when driving in Austria but the ones they sold never would have fit a fat American like myself if I needed it.

ontariolightning: If more French people die from alcohol related accidents than speeding you have a real problem. I'm not sure this will work cause a really drunk person won't consider taking their breathalyser. Might save a few people though. Is it okay if I don't take a position on this? I don't know.

people don't die from speeding or from driving drunk - they die from being an idiot or from some other idiot driving into them.

We hand out driver's licenses like prizes in cracker jack boxes. Are you breathing? OK, here's a license. They don't even suggest that you try not to kill anyone.

FarkerinMN: Odd, they vote in a socialist and 1 month later they start in with the nanny state crazyness. Honestly this would piss me off. I don't drink at all and so why should i buy something to prove to me that Im not drunk?

Yeah, really odd, since according to TFA, it was Sarkozy's conservative government that put all this in to place.

But yeah, it's always socialists that do this. Conservatives NEVER pass asinine laws. Nope. Not at all.

Posh Naranek: Can we just make cars harder to use? More complicated controls, seatbelts that strangle you if your reflexes aren't catlike, etc.

Which will give us:

Warning, catlike driving detected.

lunkhed: The French government hopes that with breathalysers in every car, drivers who suspect they may be over the limit can test themselves and if necessary refrain from taking the wheel.

Having used the test, the driver will no longer have a breathalyser kit available in the car and will then be unable to drive.

Thats why you have either a resuable one or two disposable breathalysers. If you use one you have a spare.

The French government went on a spree of stupid traffic laws. For example bikers must now have at least 150cm^3 of reflective material on their clothes.

Bionic,

It will be here soon. However instead of breaking a tail light, they will just claim the breathalyzer is defective and write you a ticket. Or they will want to see the breathalyzer and use that as an excuse for searching your car without your permission.

I've got a breathalyzer in my car. I bought it online and it works great; it's voluntary in my case.

I predict a rise in fatal alcohol poisonings after people hold drinking competitions with the fun little breathalyzers located everywhere, and alcohol-related automotive accidents will stay about the same.

Most French roads have a built in drunk driving test, wavy lanes for no reason, round abouts, and no guard rails on most mountain roads.Having a drink before driving in France helps to pass going up hill around a blind curve in the fog. 11€ fine is probably less than the test kit and is along the lines of the 8€ fine for smoking on trains. The normal French thing is enforce stupid laws for Germans and the French will just ignore it.

ontariolightning: Why are they being forced to have a high vis jacket in their car? If you're not wearing it then what is their reasoning?

If you break down or need to change a tyre etc, which makes some sense. Unlike this breathalyzer law.
