If more French people die from alcohol related accidents than speeding you have a real problem. I'm not sure this will work cause a really drunk person won't consider taking their breathalyser. Might save a few people though. Is it okay if I don't take a position on this? I don't know.

I don't think requiring it in the car will make anyone use them. Until they are pulled over and now the police can save resources by using the driver's.

It's a stupid law, probably enacted because someone who makes those devices has a friend in high places.

Meanwhile, I had to but a high vis jacket when driving in Austria but the ones they sold never would have fit a fat American like myself if I needed it.

2012-07-01 03:23:05 AM
Why are they being forced to have a high vis jacket in their car? If you're not wearing it then what is their reasoning?

people don't die from speeding or from driving drunk - they die from being an idiot or from some other idiot driving into them.

We hand out driver's licenses like prizes in cracker jack boxes. Are you breathing? OK, here's a license. They don't even suggest that you try not to kill anyone.

If you break down or need to change a tyre etc, which makes some sense. Unlike this breathalyzer law.

An €11 fine, thiz iz outrageous!

/imagine that in a bad French accent.

Most French roads have a built in drunk driving test, wavy lanes for no reason, round abouts, and no guard rails on most mountain roads.Having a drink before driving in France helps to pass going up hill around a blind curve in the fog. 11€ fine is probably less than the test kit and is along the lines of the 8€ fine for smoking on trains. The normal French thing is enforce stupid laws for Germans and the French will just ignore it.

You spelled €ars wrong, subby. They probably don't have to buy all that stuff in USD.

I predict a rise in fatal alcohol poisonings after people hold drinking competitions with the fun little breathalyzers located everywhere, and alcohol-related automotive accidents will stay about the same.

Now that the government of the US can mandate that we purchase things, how long before we get this?

No doubt this one was orginally thought up by the French equalivalent to the Ministry of Funny Walks?

Thanks Nanny State! You have saved the poor savages from themselves yet agaim!

2012-07-01 01:17:57 PM
Actually, the accident rate in France has dropped significantly already due to more strict drunk driving laws, and more enforcement of speed limits. Also, crossing a street here is no longer a hazardous game of chicken, drivers slow down for pedestrians in crosswalks--some years ago, coming from California, I had a few close calls in Paris because I was programmed to assume they would do so, and now they actually do.
But this law is bizarre crap. I imagine the legislators responsible for it had the foresight to buy lotsa stock in breathalyzer companies.

2012-07-01 01:18:17 PM
So one gets to buy one's own testing equipment to determine whether there's a serious violation. There is zero chance for fraud here.

Nanny would NEVER make us buy something unless it was for our own good and we were too dumb to think for ourselves.

I think the US auto fatality rate the last few decades is roughly double that of France.

/though it's been dropping the last few years

/4,000 annual deaths in France with a pop of 65 Million
/40,000 annual deaths in US with a pop of 310, though it dropped to like 33,000 recently

2012-07-01 01:25:52 PM
Gotta drink-drive, then you wail you gotta
drink-drive, then you wail you gotta
drive-drive, then you wail away-hay!

2012-07-01 01:27:27 PM
The French government hopes that with breathalysers in every car, drivers who suspect they may be over the limit can test themselves and if necessary refrain from taking the wheel.

Having used the test, the driver will no longer have a breathalyser kit available in the car and will then be unable to drive.

2012-07-01 01:28:06 PM
Our government could do this too now that scotus has declared that we must buy whatever the gov says to buy.

2012-07-01 01:29:43 PM
Bionic,

It will be here soon. However instead of breaking a tail light, they will just claim the breathalyzer is defective and write you a ticket. Or they will want to see the breathalyzer and use that as an excuse for searching your car without your permission.

2012-07-01 01:30:33 PM
That should work.
officer: Have you been drinking sir?
man: Yes, but I tested myself with this, and I'm below the legal limit.
officer: Ok, go about your business sir. Good night.

Tell me why alcohol is a legal substance again? If it causes so many deaths why isn't it banned?

The government of the US has always mandated that we purchase things, they're just piling more on to the stack as usual.

Examples:

1. You think you own a house? Paid it off? Try missing your property taxes for one year, then see who owns it.
2. You think you own a car? Try not paying your registration fees, insurance, inspection tag, etc., then see who owns it.
3. You think you can get out of property taxes by renting? Guess where most of that rent goes.
4. You think you can breathe air for free? OK that is still free for now. :)

Thats why you have either a resuable one or two disposable breathalysers. If you use one you have a spare.

The French government went on a spree of stupid traffic laws. For example bikers must now have at least 150cm^3 of reflective material on their clothes.

ontariolightning: Why are they being forced to have a high vis jacket in their car? If you're not wearing it then what is their reasoning?

Same reason for the triangles. If you're broken down, they want you to be visible.

IIRC, the reason most European cars have gigantic batteries and headlights that only work with the ignition on is because some countries/cities require you to have your parking lights on any time the car is parked on the side of the road.

Screw population, what's the deaths per vehicle mile?

Came here to complain about the use of the term "drink-drive." I hate that term. I would rather they called it "drunken driving."

And in Ireland you'll be similarly fined if you're not carrying two pints of Guinness.*

* A bottle of Bailey's is also acceptable.

You can own a car outright. You can't use the socialized road system without meeting standards and paying taxes.
